Based on the popular book by Jean Kerr, PLEASE DON’T EAT THE DAISY is probably the best of Doris Day’s 1960s comedies–and it finds her surprisingly paired with David Niven. While the two may seem an unlikely couple, they have extremely good on-screen chemistry, and the film neatly balances its story between the two stars so that neither overshadows the other.

Day plays Kate MacKay, mother of four hellions and the long suffering wife of esoteric drama critic Larry MacKay (Niven.) With her husband under seige by every actor, director, and producer in town, Kate decides to move the family to a home in the country–and in the process leaves her husband open to the temptations of Broadway star Deborah Vaughn (Janis Paige.) Before too long, Larry’s swelling ego threatens their happy home.

The cast is expert, with both Day and Niven extremely enjoyable and Janis Paige memorable as the Broadway siren who attempts to lead Niven astray; the supporting roles are also expertly handled by a cast that includes Spring Byington. The script is witty with a dash of sophistocated sparkle, and unlike most of Day’s later comedies manages to avoid the feel of frantic farce. A truly enjoyable outing; pure fun all the way.

This film was based on Jean Kerr’s bestselling novel of the same name. Kerr’s book was somewhat autobiographical. She was the wife of famed (and feared) New York theatre critic Walter Kerr, and their family did indeed move to a rambling old mansion in upstate New York. Jean Kerr, a famed author and playwright in her own right, also penned the long-running Broadway play “Mary, Mary” (a success on the stage for Barbara Bel Geddes; and later a film with Debbie Reynolds in the lead).

In PLEASE DON’T EAT THE DAISIES, Doris Day leads the charge with several musical numbers, including the Title Song, “Any Way the Wind Blows”, and “Que Sera Sera” (which she had introduced the previous year in Hitchcock’s remake of “The Man Who Knew Too Much”). She delivers a coyly-comedic turn as the flustered stay-at-home mother, and much of her performance still rings true today.

The supporting cast includes priceless performances from Richard Haydn, Patsy Kelly, Spring Byington; and the delicious Janis Paige, who plays the diva-esque leading lady of a Broadway musical who comes under the wrath of Niven’s poison-pen! In reality, Paige had starred in “Romance on the High Seas” (the film in which Doris Day made her Hollywood debut), and she had made a big splash on Broadway in “The Pajama Game” (she was ironically replaced by Day for the film version). The Mackay children are played by Charles Herbert, Stanley Livingston, Flip Mark, and “Baby” Gellert.

Once again, Disney misses the mark with an inferior DVD release. Why do we crave seeing our favorite stars on DVD? Picture clarity, extra features, restored prints, optional commentary… none of which are evident on this poor release of a wonderful Hayley Mills film. Disney’s inexplicable inconsistency becomes evident when poor efforts such as this one are compared to stellar, awe-inspired efforts such as “The Parent Trap” and “Pollyanna”, multi-disk sets released with quality and features on par with Criterion Collection releases. I give up on buying Disney. Next time, I’m going to rent the DVD first. Why waste money on new Disney DVD’s that are inferior in quality to the VHS versions I already have! Hey Disney, wake up!

FILM REVIEW 4 stars

First off this is a wonderful movie, and very unique in its beautiful Island setting of Crete. It is a fun mystery. Directed by James Neilson, produced by Bill Anderson. Released in theatres in 1964, it starred Hayley Mills, Eli Wallach, Joan Greenwood, and Peter McErney. It is the fast paced story of two tourists that accidently tangle with some murderous jewel thieves. Hayley plays Nikky, on vacation with her Aunt Frances in a small Greek fishing village. They stay at a remote sleepy little inn, and note that a dashing young man that Nikky is falling for from England suddenly dissappears. Romance, drama, mystery, action, and humor are in this film. The actors all work hard to make the film believable and do a great job. Pola Negri who had not made a film in 20 years was convinced to come out of retirement, and does a wonderful job as the treacherous Madame Habib. She lives on a yacht and has a cheetah on a leash for a pet. Young MCEnery went on to appear in “the Fighting Prince of Donegal” for Disney.

There is some good cultural stuff, the greek wedding dancers costumes were from a musuem, and the dancers were local professionals. Filming on location, Disney spent a fortune rebuilding the village that had been ravaged by WWII. They used 25,000 feet of lumber and 2,000 sheets of plywood. The story was taken from a book by Mary Stewart, suggested to become a movie by Mrs. Lillian Disney, but the finished film is pretty far from it’s original story. Good mucical score by Ron Grainer, title song written by Terry Gilkyson.

It eventually aired on “the Wonderful World of Disney”, in 1966, ‘67, and ‘82. It even aired in 1975 in conjunction with the “Saturday Night at the Movies with Disney” specials. Released on video the first time time in 1985. If you like Disney films of the period, you will enjoy this one too. It is nice to see Hayley Mills in her more mature role.

Joseph Ruben has fashioned a by-the-numbers, glossy, challenging, if trashy and predictable, thriller. It is imminently watchable, of course, and features the mega-watt smile of our fave, Julia Roberts, who improbably dons theatrical costumes in the midst of a semi-breakdown to the tune of Brown-Eyed Girl. The men around Julia, both her over-the-top psychopathic husband and her would-be original, soft boyfriend (Patrick Bergin and Kevin Andersen, respectively) are completely dispensable, and Ruben knows this: he keeps us monumentally focused on the beguiling Ms. Roberts throughout. It is easy to forget and forgive lapses in credibility (there are many), and the opening twenty minutes have a glossy, antiseptic queasiness about them that seem to be setting up a powerful more deft and gallant thriller. All of that vanishes, along with well-liked sense, but it hardly matters. This movie is one you can contemplate over and over and over again, a bunch of chips nearby: it moves hastily, harmlessly, and gives you what you want when you fair don’t feel distinguished like thinking.

This is a gargantuan movie that I contemplate is trying to bellow the world that this kind of abuse does exist. It is very hard to catch out and finish excellent and there should be strong laws about violence. There isn’t ever enough protection when you try to fetch out of that kind of relationship. Most times it does reach down to him or you. This is so unlit that people aloof don’t acquire it and the laws can’t assist.

Originally airing on the G4 network, Code Monkeys is from the same minds late Adult Swim’s Minoriteam, which will either stutter you proper now if this is up your alley or not. Code Monkeys revolves around a crew of video game developers in the 80’s, and the crazy hijinks that ensue when they procure a current boss in the get of the gun-toting, money hungry Texan Larrity. The main characters the reveal revolves around are sissy-boy Jerry and the wisecracking Dave; who are among a crew that also features a role-playing nerd and the lone sunless employee. What follows involves the crew tangling with Hitler’s descendants, taking a sail to prison, and getting the chance to compose a game based on Steven Spielberg’s E.T. (one of the absolute best episodes of the whole series) . While Code Monkeys is often inspired lunacy with some tremendous visual gags, there are a number of moments where no one will be laughing. However, the generous very powerful outweighs the dreadful with Code Monkeys, and the point to as a whole is very delectable, with enough old-school video game references to do any gamer smile. If you’ve never watched Code Monkeys before but dig noteworthy of the Adult Swim comedy programming, chances are you’ll dig this as well.

Code Monkeys hasnt been around for too long yet, but ive been watching since day one and loving every runt of it. like my title says, its totally for gamers. most others wont acquire a lot of the inside jokes, but anybody who gets these kinds of shows, will be cracking up at the majority of the running jokes, and crazy characters. everything is in apt 8-bit style, from the characters to the effects and backgrounds, it truly is a genious concept, and one of the best adult cartoons around. hilarious.

Luther and Nora Krank (Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis) have always gone all out for Christmas, with a Christmas Eve party, custom-made cards and invitations from the local stationer’s, and of course a tree and dinner with Honey Roasted Hickory ham. But this year is different. Their twenty-three year old daughter Blair is off to spend a year in South America with the Peace Corps.

Rather than face Nora’s empty nest syndrome and depression, Luther books them on a cruise. All they have to do is skip Christmas. It sounds easy - and liberating - but the neighbors are aghast. Led by the powerful Vic Frohmeyer (Dan Ackroyd), the residents begin an all-out assault of Christmas spirit on their supposedly Grinch-like neighbors. One of the funniest scenes is when a battalion of carolers dressed in Victorian clothes descends on the house, and the measures Luther takes to keep them away.

A twist at the end is one of the most heartwarming Christmas scenes I have ever seen.

Good for the whole family.

Nice to find a movie that is “safe” to watch around kids. not a “kid” movie, really, but, it’s safe. Lighthearted, fun, a wee bit of slapstick humor.

Love Tim Allen, he was about the same guy that he is in all his movies. The father type that tries hard, but falls short, gets into a jam, and makes us laugh. Yup, that was him in this movie. but, he DID make me laugh. So, worth the price of a ticket. (or a dvd.)

Jamie Lee Curtis, can be annoying, but in this movie, she was sweet, a good complimentary wife to Tim. She is not as funny, but, did fine. She had some good lines too, actually.

The Daughter could have been played by any young 20 ish actress, she didn’t get much airtime. Pleasant and cute though, as was the boyfriend that she brought home. He was adorable, but had a very small part.

A neighbor kid was played by Erik Per Sullivanrik, the little brother, Dewey, off Malcolm. Cute funny kid. The Boy Scout leader / nosey neighbor was a HOOT and done perfectly by Dan Aykroyd.

Me and my dear Norman popped some popcorn and cuddled on the sofa to watch this DVD, and we enjoyed it a lot. Not deep, by any means. Just a nice holiday fun.

You should buy it. Maybe buy from the nice sellers on Amazon that sell used, but perfect condition DVDs (shhhh… save some money that way!) a free tip from your Grandma Sally! ho ho ho!!

It seems that Criterion should be rewarding the faithful collectors by releasing these four early films individually, or in a 4-DVD collection. I was very willing to shell out for Criterion’s Eclipse series “Post War Kurosawa” collection, which filled in a lot of gaps. I thought an “Early Kurosawa” would have been the logical conclusion.

Since I have most of these 25 films (and a copy of “The Warrior’s Cinema,” book, also available individually), and two different Criterion releases of High and Low, and imagine other Kurosawa collectors are in a similiar boat, I can’t recommend this, unless you are gifting it to someone who owns no Kurosawa films. I guess I’ll have to wait and see what Criterion does next.

Akira Kurosawa is one of those directors that requires absolutely no introduction at all… but I’ll do it anyway.

In short, Kurosawa was one of the most legendary film directors in cinematic history — he not only inspired other great directors, but he splintered your basic movie conventions (”Rashomon”), inspired others (the wipe! Slow motion action!) and created the standard for Japanese action, drama and historical movies. “AK 100: 25 Films by Akira Kurosawa” is basically what it sounds like: twenty five movies by Kurosawa (including some never before released in the U.S.).

It includes all the classic films that Kurosawa is so famous for — “Seven Samurai,” “Sanjuro,” “Yojimbo” and “The Hidden Fortress.” Kurosawa packs the movies with with brilliant stories of samurai, warlords, feisty princesses, goofy peasants, a wandering nameless ronin who has a penchant for cleaning out filthy corrupt towns, and a band of samurai who are trying to save a village of not-entirely-blameless peasants. The best of them: “Rashomon,” in which a woman is raped and a man is murdered, but his killer’s identity is the subject of some debate.

And then there are the period movies that people don’t usually mention as quickly: “Kagemusha,” “The Lower Depths,” “Throne of “Blood,” “Red Beard,” and the Noh-inspired “The Men Who Tread on the Tiger’s Tail.” With the exception of the last one (a semi-comedic story about a nobleman trying to avoid being killed by his brother), these stories are a bit darker in theme, with lots of cruel warlords, foul Edo apartment buildings, an arrogant young doctor in Edo who clashes with his new boss, and a Japanese-themed retelling of Macbeth. It even includes the brilliant two-part judo saga “Sanshiro Sugata,” which were only Kurosawa’s first and third movies in his long-ranging career.

Fortunately the box set also emphasizes Kurosawa’s movies set in then-current times: it includes darker-hued, gritty movies like “Stray Dog,” the propagandic “The Most Beautiful,” “I Live In Fear,” “Ikiru,” “Scandal,” “No Regrets For Our Youth,” “The Bad Sleep Well,” “Drunken Angel,” and “High And Low.” If anything, these movies have a wider range of topics — Kurosara delves into darker facets of human nature with stories of revenge, family strife, police work, a dying man’s last months, political destruction of people’s lives, gangsters and corporate corruption.

But he also strays outside the basic outlines with stories like the lighthearted “One Wonderful Sunday”, which focuses on a couple of lovers having a cheap day out in postwar Japan, and “Dodesukaden’s” poignant tales of poverty-stricken people in a slum. The most brilliant of the contemporary movies: “Madadayo,” the uplifting story of an elderly professor and his students.

“AK 100: 25 Films by Akira Kurosawa” is basically a big collection of Kurosawa’s movies, mostly of his more obscure works (including the early stuff) but containing most of his best-known works as well. Most of these have been released by Criterion before, but there are a few that haven’t except as some old VHS tapes — and the entire collection gives a very comprehensive look at the myriad styles and stories that Akira Kurosawa conjured like a magician.

Even from the earliest movies, Kurosawa imbues his movies with many layers: artistic flourishes that were unique at the time (aiming a camera at the sun), blood-spattering action, sly wit and powerful and insightful direction (the final exquisitely bittersweet scene of “Ikiru”). And he got some truly brilliant actors for these movies, most notable Toshiro Mifune — he played a wide range of brilliant roles, including a crazed bandit, a “red beard” doctor, a powerful general, a Macbethian warlord, and a brilliant nameless ronin. Among others.

But as for the downsides — for some reason it’s missing films like “Ran,” “Dreams” and the underrated “Dersu Uzala.” And there don’t seem to be many on-disc extras here — there’s new digital transfers, a “remembrance,” and a book called “The Warrior’s Camera: The Cinema of Akira Kurosawa,”

“AK 100: 25 Films by Akira Kurosawa” shows the considerable range of this legendary director, with movies both famous and obscure — ideally it would have had a few more, but it’s still an outstanding collection.
