The topics and humor in this show come fast and in a highly random manner, which may not appeal to everyone, but if you like the old 1-minute “blackout” type of sketches done years ago on many variety shows, then Robot Chicken will appeal to you. If a gag misses the mark for you it will be over fast and the next one will be rolling by moments later, a gag that may be very different and a lot funnier to you. There’s something for everyone, as pop-culture, politics and more are skewered using action figures and other models in a rapid parade of stop-motion comedy sketches. My personal favorites are those that use action figures from some popular cartoon, comic book or movie, placing them in character in situations where they are forced to deal with everyday frustrations and problems. It’s bust-a-gutt funny when you see Lex Luthor and Skeletor stuck in traffic, Transformers suffering from severe chronic illnesses, and more. There’s also a hilarious bit where a stop-motion Mark Hamill (who voices himself) walks off the set of Star Wars after Darth Vader spouts a string of the most improbable explanations of how things work in Star Wars mythology. Many other actors and well-known personalities provide guest voices on the show, often poking fun at themselves or work they have done in the past.

Robot Chicken Vol. 1 is funny enough to warrant repeated viewing and I’m looking forward both to buying this DVD set and to seeing the second season of the show which begins in April 2006.

I just wanted to write this review because the only review of this show is actually wrong. The show isn’t claymation, it’s stop motion action figures. The orgins of this show actually stem from two things: the mad scientist scenario is an homage to MST3K and the actual programs are an extension of a feature titled “Twisted Toyfare Theater” in a magazine entitled Toyfare. Okay, now that I have clarified these miscrepancies, on to an actual review. The shows aren’t exactly peabody award winners, but if you’re like me and grew up in the 70’s and 80’s you’ll get a good chuckle out of seeing your favorite action figures in hilarious and sometimes compromising positions. My main problem with the show was that the episodes are only 13 minutes long. Something like this definitely needs to be upgraded to a half hour at least. If you’re a fan of Family Guy and it’s ilk, give this show a good look, but if you are easily offended, steer clear. It’s definitely not a kid’s show.

I will admit as a kid I love the Disney Princesses, as an adult raising a very impressionable young daughter I look at them a little differently.

This limited edition DVD follows Princess Jasmine and Princess Aurora in a fun, musical filled adventure. Your little girl will learn that when you try to take shortcuts in getting a job done, you will end up with disaster and it will take more time and effort to fix the problems you made. I love the lesson that this teaches our children - something we are already trying to instill in our daughter.

What I do not like about the Princesses is that life is oftentimes centered around them rather than others. I want my daughter to be others centered not self centered. When you are others centered and you come last, you will have a joy and happiness that things can not give you.

The music was as always cute and very catchy.

I loved this movie. It has a lot of quality.

And I really hope they do more volumes, because they included music videos from Belle, Cinderella and Mulan, so the volume two might be coming next year.

I can’t wait to watch more volumes of this “enchanted” series.

Wow. I first saw Princess Mononoke during its limited theatrical release (twice). Many people have issues with the dub, but this is by far the best dubbed anime ever to be released — I, like most anime fans, normally insist on subtitles, but Neil Gaiman and the cast succeeded in putting real emotion into these characters. The casting of Billy Bob Thornton and Claire Danes might rub some ears the wrong way, but in my opinion the emotional impact is still there regardless of the odd accents. In any case, the Japanese track is included, and it’s phenomenal. As for its content, most arguments about its violence and length can be dismissed by viewing it as a film, rather than as a cartoon. It’s not Disney. The plot is a complex and delicate exercise in shades of gray. Don’t expect Akira or Macross either — it’s really not of the same genre.

The video and audio quality is the sort that you would use to show off your new home theater system. In fact, I found the Japanese soundtrack to be richer and better dynamically balanced than the English track (!). Disney/Miramax really took advantage of the format by including BOTH the Japanese and English opening titles and credits — they are automatically selected depending on your choice of language via an angle switch. Transparent and ingenious. There are two sets of subtitles — one for the English track, and the other is the literal translation of the Japanese (since some liberties were taken in creating the English script).

Disney was originally going to release “Mononoke Hime” without the original language track, which created an outrage among anime fans (who, myself included, signed a massive internet petition which eventually turned the tide). I applaud this decision, as well as the splendid attention to detail. It has made this incredible movie an even better value.

It is difficult to be profound about a movie that has been written about so much. Much of which has been written is rather obvious. Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke, although it is an adult oriented film in terms of complexity, it has something for everyone. Princess Mononoke is appealing on many levels because much like other anime features like Armitage III, Ghost in the Shell, and Akira, Princess Mononoke also confronts the issue of technology head on. However, what is unique here is that Miyazaki problematizes the duality of man vs. nature really expanding the problem to man within nature and calling for a sense of co-operation. Again, While other movies like Armitage III, Ghost in the Shell, and Akira are a shade darker than most, Mononoke is laced with hope and reconstruction.

Based on our epistemological framework we are looking for good vs. evil. We are always trying to set things up in a space of binary oppositions. Most viewers are looking to make things “simple.” Juxtaposed against our longing for the simplistic, Miyazaki doesn’t make judgements about good or evil. Miyazkai simply asks many questions. It is really unfair to make any direct comparison but the reason this genre is appealing to a wider audience is that this genre and the movies that are produced within it are more “realistic” than the more common Disney animations offerings.

Another sub-theme is the healing power of nature which is superior to the human need to conquer and control. Susan Napier writes: “At a more complex level, films such as Princess Mononoke actually works to resist and even confront certain public stereotypes, inspiring huge numbers of moviegoers to look at some of the myths of modern Japan in a more critical way.” The movie zeroes in on ecological issues, a far cry from the stereotypes we have of Japan as a giant impersonal machine. Along this same lines, the big four (listed previously) warn us just as much about the march of modernity and technology. In Princess Mononoke, it seems like Miyazaki is setting up a battle between man and nature. My sense is that it is man in nature.

No doubt, this is a complex movie. The interplay between Asitaka, Mononoke and Lady Eboshi is not a simple one. Within the confines of the story, no one character is all bad or all good. All the characters are multi-dimensional and not one character is a caricature. A pivotal character is Lady Eboshi. Lady Eboshi’s involvement with Iron Town is not be dismissed as trivial. How is the viewer going to reconcile Lady Eboshi’s agenda and altruism? The beauty and wonder of Princess Mononoke is not so much that it provides answers but that it poses deep questions. For this reason alone (and there are many) Princess Mononoke can be classified as a work of art and it will survive the ravages of time.

Inside a grim little room in the empty countryside somewhere east of the Berlin wall an East German agent is interrogating a defecting British spy. The defector is anxious and weary. He wants his money now. Prompting the Communist agent to say this : “You are a traitor, the lowest currency of the cold war. We buy you, we sell you, we lose you, we can even shoot you. Not a bird in the trees would stir if we did just that.”

Except that Alec Leamas(Richard Burton) is not really a defector, he is only masquerading as one. On his last assignment for the British Secert Service, he is to pretend to be burnt out and jobless. Never faraway from a bottle he walks around the streets of London cynical and depressed, his “masterstroke” in this act is an ugly fight with a shopkeeper who refuses to give him credit. This ofcourse attracts the attention of the East German agants who view him as a potential defector because of his dire need for cash and his embitterment towards the British Agency for abandoning him. It is a credit to Burton’s brilliant and painfully realistic performance that you are pretty sure his embitterment in not entirely an act. That he really is a drunk. That he wholeheartedly agrees with the German when he calls him “the lowest currency of the cold war”, even if he is not a defector. To him, all spies, on both sides, are scum.

John Le Carre was an ex-British intelligence officer when he wrote the celebrated novel on which this film was based. It was called “the finest spy story ever written” by the writer of The Third Man, Graham Greene. And in a sense, The Spy Who Came In From The Cold starts where The Third Man left off. The lead character has already lost any faith he had in humanity. I suspect that the only reason Leamas hadn’t really defected is because even money has lost its lure. Surprisingly the most sympathetic characters in the book(and the film) are the communist spy Fiedler(Oskar Werner) and naive communist librarian Liz Gold(renamed Nan Perry in the film and played by Claire Bloom), and both pay dearly for it. In the world of The Spy Who Came In From The Cold idealism is not merely misguided, it is pathetic. When Fiedler sincerely asks Leamus “How do you sleep at night without a philosophy?”. Leamus’s typically jaded answer is “I don’t believe in God or Karl Marx. I don’t believe in anything that rocks the world. I reserve the right to remain ignorant.”

In adapting the novel, scripters Paul Dehn and Guy Trosper retained the icy restraint of the novel. Director Martin Ritt(who made the better known but inferior Norma Rae) shoots the film in a harsh black and white. Accompanied by a sad violin score, The Spy Who Came In From The Cold is finally a sentimental film about unsentimentality. Ridiculously Burton lost out on the Oscar infavour of Lee Marvin in the frankly ridiculous Cat Ballou. The film was nominated for just one other Oscar which was for Art-Direction. A shame. With its moral and asthetic complexity, this is as far away from Bond or Tom Clancy based thrillers as you can get. Possibly the greatest film in its genre, and in its own quiet way the equal of The Third Man. The final message being that people who are driven enough to enter the world of espionage are not(and can’t afford to be) driven by ideals. In that world the only motive is expediency.

Richard Burton’s brooding performance coupled with appropriately grim black and white photography from cameraman Oswald Morris provide just the proper mood as the masterpiece thriller from former British intelligence operative John Le Carre was brought to the screen in 1965 with capable fidelity.

While a British production, the film’s director was American Martin Ritt, an accomplished master of providing films of compelling seriousness with a touch of the grim, as exemplified by “No Down Payment”, “Hud” and “The Front.” Burton plays an intelligence operative gone to seed, hence the reference to “coming out of the cold” which, in spy talk, involves being taken out of the field of operation. Burton goes to planned seed, becoming an alcoholic who ultimately is thrown into prison for pummeling a thoroughly decent London grocer who had extended him credit and ultimately had to draw the line, incurring Burton’s well orchestrated rage in accordance with plans from MI5.

As soon as Burton leaves prison Michael Hordern is waiting for him. They discuss “doing articles,” a cover for what is really expected, turning allegiance and going to work for the Soviets. During this period Burton is provided with a job at a small library featuring psychic works. It is here that he meets Claire Bloom, an ideologue who attends local Communist study groups as a way of making a difference in a troubled world.

Burton operates in a realm of barely contained rage. He inveighs Hordern with scorn and is not about to disagree with Oskar Werner when the East Germany Communist ideologue refers to Burton and his ilk as “the lowest currency of the Cold War.”

Burton’s contempt for his role in a grimy affair is enhanced by the fact that he has been sent to East Germany to clear Peter Van Eyck of charges that he is a double agent working for Britain. Werner has shrewdly pegged him, and British intelligence does all it can to help a ruthless individual it took charge of after he murdered a man on a trip to England during an East German traveling trade exhibit. Eventually Bloom surfaces as a prop to assist the contemptible Van Eyck.

More twists and turns occur until ultimately Burton wonders just what the future holds for him, and whether Bloom, the only person he cares for in life, will be part of it. Circumstances ultimately answer important questions for Burton as he is propelled through a swirl of events masterminded by wily intelligence operatives to his ultimate destiny.

This is a spectacularly moody giant of a film. Guy Troper and Paul Rehn fashioned a brilliant script which meshes with Le Carre’s chilling suspense masterpiece. “Spy” was a deserving recipient of a Best Film British Academy Award. It bristles with controlled rage and sizzling wit delivered with the proper measure of acid by Burton in one of his enduring roles.

Don’t listen to any claims made made for Bullet For A General, Django is without a doubt the best non-Leone spaghetti Western of all time. The opening scene (blue-clad Nero carrying a saddle over his shoulder and dragging a coffin through the gooiest mud in film history)is beautiful. Corbucci’s direction is more controlled here than anywhere else–less zooms, less jarring close-ups, and neater editing. And Django has to be one of the first action heroes to fire a heavy machine gun from the hip (without even pulling the trigger, no less!).

But make no mistake. This is Italian exploitation–love it or hate it. An ear is cut off, prostitutes fight in the mud, and our hero’s hands are crushed in gory detail that would make One-Eyed Jacks mumble in disgust. Don’t expect John Ford here. But if you’re looking for something different, are curious about spaghetti Westerns but afraid to buy any because so many are horrible–then this is the movie for you!

I think most people who don’t care much for this movie had been spoiled by Leone before watching it. I mean, Leone really set the bar high for westerns and I don’t think anyone has done it as good since. He pretty much reinvented the western and set the rules. Italian directors who followed in his wake were directors who usually did other kinds of films, but started doing westerns coz they were big bucks at the box office. Django was the first of the non-Leone spaghetti westerns, and it’s a great movie. Sure, the budget shows and the acting isn’t always the best, but I’m able to look past that. The look of the film is unique-Instead of the blazing hot deserts, most of this film is cloudy and muddy(I know it was shot in winter and I think it takes place in winter as well), giving it it’s own look. Franco Nero is no Eastwood or Bronson, but he has the right stuff for the part and pulls it off nicely. Very violent for 1966, but we’ve become so desensitized over the years that it won’t have you gasping in shock. It’s still brutal enough though. Lots of complaints about the soundtrack again. Well, once again this isn’t Leone, therefore the epic music isn’t here either. But I don’t see how you can hear the theme song and not laugh. You can just see Tom Jones singing this to a crowd of screaming women in Vegas. Once again Blue Underground has given another forgotten film the best possible treatment it can have. They give us an interview with Franco Nero and a very interesting short film with Nero as well. And as always, Blue Underground gives us the original poster as the cover(I love how they do that with these old flicks!). If you have any interest at all in westerns and have seen the Dollars trilogy too many times, you can’t go wrong with Django-that is if you lower your expectations a tad.

In this re-write of Dumas’ “The Three Musketeers”, Barbie is a country lass named Corinne. Like her deceased father, who just happens to have been D’Artagnan, it is her dream to serve and protect the royal family. But unlike her father she faces even more difficulties in getting to prove herself worthy of the Musketeer title because she is a girl.

This then is the pivotal point of the plot, that girls can do whatever they want if they are willing to train for it and not let others squash there dreams. And, in fact, this theme is extended to include everyone, even the Prince of France, who feels like he will have to give up his scientific interests once he becomes king.

Corrine is joined in this adventure by 3 other girls, who also happen to want to be Musketeers. They are all athletic and bright, differing though in their interests. One quotes poetry, one plays the violin, and so forth. But because they are girls they end up working as housekeepers in the palace until they discover that there is a plot against the prince’s life. Then they are called upon to use all of their skills and inner strength to try to foil the plot.

There is the usual music and dance numbers, as well as the usual avoidance of violence in this film. The talking animals include a mean-spirited dog, Corrine’s cat, and a horse named Alexander.

Talking Points:::

I really liked the strong themes in the movie. Like every Barbie film there’s a good underlying message and exemplary behavior.

I thought the music was excellent. It’s a little more trendy than in previous Barbie movies, and I’m even thinking about seeing if there’s a DVD we can purchase.

I thought the animation was not as good as in her other movies. However we saw this at the theater so that may have made small imperfections appear worse than they would at home.

Overall, a very good movie. I give it 4 Stars because some of the plotting was inferior to previous movies, and if you could only purchase one Barbie video for your child, I would suggest that Barbie Barbie in The Nutcracker and Barbie Barbie As The Princess and the Pauper were better choices.

Pam T~

My two daughters love the Barbie movies, especially Barbie and the Diamond Castle and Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princesses. So we could hardly wait to get Barbie and the Three Musketeers.

My girls love the movie and are running around pretending to be musketeers now! However, I am disappointed. The songs don’t fit the movie well and are not easy to sing along with like my girls prefer. Also, I am all for girl empowerment, I strongly want my girls to feel they can accomplish anything they want. However; I strongly object to women gaining power by trying to belittle men. The prince was a weak dreamer who cowered as Corrine (Barbie) fought for him! Would it have be so bad for them both to have been fighting the bad guys?

On the positive side, I do like the themes of working hard to gain your goals and teamwork that were portrayed. Also, the cute byplay of the animals from previous movies was there. (A little too much like Princess and the Pauper as it is the good cat and horse vs. the mean bully dog, but it doesn’t detract from the movie.)

In the final “six minutes of terror” a parachute will open, giant protective airbags will inflate around the lander, and retrorockets will fire for a few seconds before Spirit is cut loose, bouncing its way to what everyone hopes will be a safe landing. To survive, Spirit will have to function perfectly. It will also have to be lucky, since there’s no way of knowing when a sharp rock or a gust of wind will ruin your day on Mars.
