In 1985, Pulitzer-prize winning author and astronomer Carl Sagan (1934-1996) wrote a brilliant “what-if” scenario in his novel entitled “Contact”. In the novel, Carl Sagan created a scenario in which his protagonist, a radio astronomer named Dr. Eleanor Ann ‘Ellie’ Arroway, discovers an extraterrestrial radio transmission that is clearly from an intelligent alien source. The discovery causes intense debate between the proponents of science, religion and government that eventually leads to some very compelling questions on the nature of faith itself. In 1997, the novel was transformed into a film of the same name under the direction of the well-known director Robert Zemeckis, who had previously directed “Forrest Gump” (1994, for which Zemeckis won the Oscar for Best Director), “Death Becomes Her” (1992), “Back to the Future” (1985) and “Romancing the Stone” (1984).

Carl Sagan, with assistance from writers Ann Druyan, James V. Hart and Michael Goldenberg, slightly modified the original story by giving Dr. Arroway (played by Jodie Foster) a more personal adversary in another astronomer, Dr. David Drumlin (played by Tom Skerritt). At the beginning of the film, a brief exploration of Dr. Arroway’s childhood (played by Jena Malone) is provided that helps to establish her purely scientific perception of reality that resulted in part from the passing away of her father, Ted Arroway (David Morse), who had also encouraged her love of science, astronomy and radio communications. As an astronomer, Dr. Arroway dedicated her work to the SETI project (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence), which Dr. Drumlin considers frivolous and potentially damaging to Dr. Arroway’s credibility. With her governmental funding cut, Dr. Arroway eventually gets private funding after she approaches one of the world’s richest and most influential men, S. R. Hadden (John Hurt). With funding secured, Dr. Arroway’s search continues at the Very Large Array (VLA) near Socorro, New Mexico. With her unorthodox method of personally listening to outer space static, Dr. Arroway suddenly and unexpectedly hears a bizarre set of sounds. She immediately gets her team, which includes Kent Clark (William Fichtner), busy working on analyzing the signal, which likely comes from an extraterrestrial source. Once verified, she announces her discovery to the world via the news media, to the disdain of governmental officials including Dr. Drumlin, National Security Advisor Michael Kitz (James Woods) and then President Bill Clinton (himself via archive footage). It also gains explosive response from very religious individuals who don’t necessarily share Dr. Arroway’s enthusiasm, except for Father Palmer Joss (Matthew McConaughey), whom Dr. Arroway met in Puerto Rico in a more than casual sense. The content of the message itself raises some very large questions.

What really brought Carl Sagan’s vision to life in “Contact” was placing it within a contemporary timeframe. This included the use of many real events, people and places that included CNN, the VLA, the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico and many cameos from current politicians the television personalities (Jay Leno, Larry King, Geraldine A. Ferraro, Geraldo Rivera to name only a few). Also, Robert Zemeckis placed actors within archival footage in much the same way as he did with the film “Forrest Gump” in 1994. All of this, as well as superb acting from the principal actors (Jodie Foster, Tom Skerrit, Matthew McConaughey, John Hurt, William Fichtner and James Woods), great cinematography, wonderful sets and great special effects make this a brilliant film. Other memorable characters include Rachel Constantine (Angela Bassett), Richard Rank (Rob Lowe), the NASA Mission Director (Tucker Smallwood) and Joseph (Jake Busey). Some of the most memorable scenes in the film include Dr. Arroway hearing the message at the VLA, the public response, the political discussions, Dr. Arroway meeting S.R. Hadden, the machine, Dr. Arroway’s relationship with Palmer, the pinnacle event and its aftermath.

Overall, I rate “Contact” with a resounding 5 out of 5 stars. In my opinion, it portrays many very probable debates and reactions if astronomers ever actually do discover intelligent extraterrestrial communication signals. I applaud Carl Sagan for his vision, as well as Robert Zemeckis and the many actors and other people involved with the making of this very engaging and compelling film.

This is not your typical sci-fi movie. If you want spaceships blasting each other or evil aliens with mental powers, try Star Wars or Dark City. This is the culmination of a lifetime spent communicating the awesome potential of scientific discovery in layman’s terms. I am, of course, speaking of Carl Sagan, the heart and soul of this movie.

Sagan’s vision, so eloquently translated by Robert Zemeckis and brought to life by Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey, is a realistic exploration of mankind’s reaction to first contact with extraterrestrial intelligence. Skepticism, hope, wonder, fear, distrust, and wide-eyed enthusiasm greet the “Message from Vega.” Zemeckis stays true to Sagan and delivers a thoughtful character study, a surprisingly even-handed debate on religion and science, and a commentary on mankind’s readiness for entry into the Galactic milieu.

One of the finest and most scientifically (circa 1990’s) accurate sci-fi dramas of the past 10 years. (Except for the fact that we search thousands of frequencies at once, so humans don’t actually listen to signals from space.) Foster’s performance is worth the price of the movie.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s MGM made a couple of movies on film biographies on songwriters such as Jerome Kern (Till the Clouds Roll By), Rogers and Hart (Words and Music), just to name a few. Well Three Little Words is actually about the Tin Pan Alley song-writing team Kalmar and Ruby. Fred Astaire stars as Bert Kalmar and Red Skelton stars as Harry Ruby. Also starring is Vera-Ellen (White Christmas) as Kalmar’s wife and former vaudeville partner and Arlene Dahl as Ruby’s wife. Fred Astaire once said this was one of his favorite movies he made and this a very enjoyable film. Some of the highlights of the film include Gloria DeHaven protraying her real life mother and Debbie Reynolds lip-singing to “I Wanna Be Loved By You.” The numbers are great in this movie and include:

Where Did You Get That Girl- Fred Astaire and Vera-Ellen sing and dance to this number. This is one of my favorites.

Mr. and Mrs. Hoofer at Home- Fred and Vera dance to this number as well. It is very enjoyable, another favorite.

My Sunny Tennessee- Fred and Red Skelton sing to this number.

So Long Oo-Long- Another song Fred and Red sing to.

Who’s Sorry Now?- Gloria DeHaven protrays as her real mother in this number. Personally I think Ms. DeHaven has a wonderful voice. Another favorite!

Come On, Papa- This is one of my favorites as well. Vera-Ellen sings (really dubbed) and dances to this great number with a male chorus. A real stand out!

Nevertheless- Another favorite! Fred and Vera sing and dance to this great song.

All Alone Monday- Gale Robbins sings this number.

I Wanna Be Loved By You- Debbie Reynolds sings (really dubbed by the real Helen Kane, the Boop-Boop-a-Doop girl herself) and protrays her Helen Kane as well in this number. A cute number.

Thinking of You- In my opinion a very beautiful song. Vera-Ellen sings this and dances with Fred.

I Love You So Much- Arlene Dahl sings to this. A very gorgeous number.

Three Little Words- Fred Astaire sings this song! Another favorite.

I highly recommend this movie if you enjoy the MGM musicals or if you like Fred Astaire. Fred may not do a lot of dancing in this one but it’s still a great film. Another great thing about this movie is compared to the other film bio-pics on songwriters this one Three Little Words is actually a very accurate depiction of the lives of tunesmiths Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby. I heard Harry Ruby had a great deal of input for the making of this film. Anyway see this movie, the cast, the music and everything else in this movie is great!

This is one of Astaire`s lesser known vehicles, but in my opinion - 1 of his very best. It was his own favorite movie. He is a delight co-starring with Red Skelton(his intense comic style is toned down here) and has a wonderful chemistry with the great dancer Vera-Ellen. The film is full of good songs and memorable supporting players including Gloria DeHaven(as her own mother Mrs Carter DeHaven), Debbie Reynolds(dubbed by Helen Kane) and Carleton Carpenter. Debbie and Carleton was reteamed in the Jane Powell film TWO WEEKS WITH LOVE and indeed stopped the show with “Aba-Daba Honeymoon”.

But when the Norwegian actress Arlene Dahl enters the film; she brings the film a step further. Her beauty and charm makes u go wild and her “I Love You So Much”-number good and simply staged. Unfortunately her role as Eileen Percy - the silent movie star - is a minor 1, but she glows every time she`s in front of the camera.

Miss Dahl has visited her homeland many times and has done wonders for the Norwegian community in the States. She is also the mother of Lorenzo Lamas of Falcon Crest and Renegade fame.

Sam Peckinpah’s ‘The Wild Bunch’ is a masterpiece western. Not the best ever made, but close. So don’t think I don’t like this movie because I love it. However, since Mexicans are its villains, perhaps you’d be interested to read an opinion from this side of the border.

The Mexico of ‘The Wild Bunch’ looks more like a metaphor than a real place. It is both Heaven and Hell; the theatre where the bunch will find Death but also Redemption. Accordingly, every Mexican depicted in the picture is either a saint or a monster (no middle ground here, except for the Mexican member of the Bunch, who is aptly named “Angel”, although a fallen one). This serves the story splendidly, for it’s meant to be an epic ballad and not a travelogue, but it does jolt the Mexican viewer because the “good Mexico” is portrayed so idyllic it’s unreal, while the “bad Mexico” is very, very accurate; in fact, no American movie has captured the look, sound, feel, texture and carnage of the Mexican Revolution as this one has (even if the grandiose final scene, where the Bunch kills hundreds of heavily armed soldiers all by themselves and none of the four falls down even when riddled by bullets, defies all logic!). Perhaps that’s why it was banned in Mexico back when it was released in 1969.

Funny, for it was filmed in Mexico as well. The Texas bordertown you see at the begining of the story is actually Parras, Coahuila, and many of its citizens acted as extras in the movie: white ones as “Texans”, brown ones as -what else?- Mexicans! Don Raúl Madero, brother of Francisco I. Madero, the man who started the Mexican Revolution, appears …as a Texan! Even the two German officers are Mexican! So, as you can see, we Mexicans come in all shapes, sizes and colors, and hardly fit these two tiresome “noble peasant”-”greaser bandito” stereotypes American movies seem so comfortable with! I hope some day Hollywood realizes this and “walk the extra mile” to portray us for what we are: a very complex and diverse society. Neither saints, nor monsters, and certainly not mere bowling pins!

P.S.: Many great Mexican directors, all personal friends of Peckinpah, appear in the film. Emilio “Indio” Fernández (Mapache) and Chano Urueta (Angel’s grandfather) were the best of our cinema’s Golden Age. Fernando Wagner (German officer) was also a competent theatre director, and Alfonso Arau (Herrera) is best known for his international hit ‘Like Water for Chocolate’. Jorge Russek (Zamorra) was an outstanding photographer for National Geographic, and Sonia Amelio (Teresa) is a world-aclaimmed dancer (she was even awarded with an “Order of Lenin” back in the Soviet Union). And just for the record, the word “Mapache” (”racoon”) stands for “coward thief”. No Mexican general, no matter how corrupt, would use, I believe, such a nickname! And since Mapache is “a killer working for Huerta”, the action takes place in 1913, not 1916 (Huerta was ousted in early 1914).

There’s not much that can be noted about Sam Peckinpah’s brilliant 1969 western epic “The Wild Bunch” that has not already been written. It was an unanticipated, influential work where all things came together, but for a moment, the end product a huge, sweeping canvas of intimacy between comrades, violence between combatants, desperate anger amidst changing times. Part Kurosawa, part Siegel, part Fuller, part Ford, Peckinpah combined his inspirations with a healthy dose of 1960s rebellion producing the ultimate work of his generation, and one of the greatest westerns in history. It was Peckinpah’s great fortune that the right actors were available for this film - William Holden and Robert Ryan in the twilight of their memorable careers, Ernest Borgnine with just enough youth to be a perfect and loyal presence, Edmond O’Brien chewing up the scenery with tobacco-stained teeth, and of course Peckinpah friends Strother Martin, L.Q. Jones and Warren Oates in salty supporting roles. It was also his great fortune cinematographer Lucien Ballard and composer Jerry Fielding were also on hand to participate in his steadfast vision.

Peckinpah also had something to prove at this point in his career, when he was still a hungry director with a vision, before alcoholism, disillusionment and celebrity status took hold. He hid nothing from viewers, and his contradictory heart was laid bare in “The Wild Bunch.” The direction and editing during the violent moments of this film - the opening bank robbery and the concluding battle with the Mexican army - are some of the most unforgettable scenes ever put on film. But ironically, and this was usually the case in most Peckinpah films, it is the quiet moments one remembers. Pike (Holden) and Dutch’s (Borgnine) melancholy conversation next to a campfire; The Bunch riding out of Angel’s village as if in a funeral procession; Deke (Ryan) taking Pike’s pistol from it’s holster, gently holding it in his hand; and of course Pike standing in the doorway and mouthing two simple words, “Let’s go.”

And of course you have The Walk, in which Holden, Borgnine, Oates and Ben Johnson quietly begin loading their guns, cocking them, arming themselves, smiling at one another, standing shoulder to shoulder. There’s not much left for these forgotten outlaws who have lived past their time. Just a code of honor, just their self respect. And so they Walk into the heart of the Mexican army to retrieve their comrade Angel, a prisoner and personal enemy of General Mapache. These surviving members of The Wild Bunch are free to go, but Angel, youthful, love-struck, rebellious, was one of them. They are not going to leave their comrade.

After viewing the extraordinary documentary “The Wild Bunch: An Album In Montage” and seeing the rare footage of Peckinpah literally improvising The Walk, walking alongside Holden, Borgnine, Oates and Johnson, inventing by instinct, one realizes how fiercely creative this man was as a director. This film was his moment in time, his vision, his idea, Peckinpah’s nightmarish and amazing dream.

Peckinpah never really made a film quite like “The Wild Bunch” again. Of course, no director ever really has before or since. His uneven career of 14 films, some good, some not, has been celebrated and honored. Peckinpah the man, adorned in faded jeans and bandanna, certainly perpetuated his myth-like status. But in the end, you will always have “The Wild Bunch,” an unforgettable film, raw, gritty, whiskey-soaked, sublime. I cry whenever I watch this film. I cry in awe. All things came together for Peckinpah on “The Wild Bunch,” and the moment is everlasting.

Love the Flintstones. Have been waiting for a nice priced complete set. Unfortunately the paper sleeves for the discs WILL end up scratching the dvds. Im sure some will be scratched upon purchase . So I will get the single sets. I recommend people buy those instead. Much nicer cases and only about about $15.95 more (105.94 for all the single sets) than that the silly looking box the complete set comes in. Course Im still giving it four stars for the episodes.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Flintstones: The Complete Series! Click Here

UPDATE: The regular sets have now been put back to their regular price of around $32. So its not so good a deal anymore. I guess you could wait for them to be on sale again or just take your chances with the complete set. Plus theres no new bonus material so the only thing your getting EXTRA is the UGLY ORANGE BOX. This set is basically the orignal six season sets repackaged. Again I think its best to wait for good prices on the single sets. The packaging is much more convienent.

Just received the set and it’s okay being the whole series is here but it’s no different from the original 6 sets. I would have liked it better if they included maybe a book or something besides the disks like the Batman Animated series box set does.

It mentions 4.5 hours of extras leading me to believe they added more extras but that’s not the case. The extras are the same as in the individual sets.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Flintstones: The Complete Series! Click Here

Packaging comes in 2 booklets made of cheap cardboard with very tight sleeves to insert the disks. This can and will cause some scratches on the disk being it’s tight. About half my discs do have visible scratches on them. The booklets are nice with just the episode titles of each disc listed on them.

I hate the ugly orange case so i got rid of it and kept the 2 booklets.

So i give a 3 star rating for the content, and minus 2 stars for lack of anything extra from the original sets.

Given his notorious reputation for cranking out the most politically-correct of films, it’s a really pleasant surprise to watch this profoundly conservative effort by John Sayles. Based on a 1959 novel by Rosalie Fry, Secret of the Ron Mor Skerry, Sayles’ Roan Inish tells the story of a young girl, Fiona, who when her mother dies is sent to live with her grandparents on the Irish coast in the years immediately after WWII. The family had long lived on the island of Roan Inish, in the company of seals, but they were relocated to Donegal during the war and now may have to move again, further inland. There’s an ineffable sadness about the old couple, the grandfather especially misses the island and mourns the lost way of life they enjoyed; the grandmother misses Fiona’s brother, Jamie, who was swept out to sea in a wooden cradle when they were moving off of Roan Inish. Fiona though is convinced that her baby brother still lives and, indeed, her cousin Eamon tells her that he’s been sighted sailing around in his cradle boat.

Fiona’s grandfather and cousins are only too happy to tell her tales about the family and Roan Inish, maintaining their strong ties to the island at least in memory and recitation. Finally, one cousin, Tadhg–a “dark one” (dark of hair and eye like her brother was)–tells the story of how an ancestor captured a selkie, a seal-woman. The selkies are said to swim ashore in seal form and then strip off their skins to bask in the sun as beautiful women, but if you can grab their skin before they slip away they are bound to you. The family then is descended from this selkie, though one of her children eventually told her where to find the skin and she immediately swam off.

Fiona takes to visiting the island and spots Jamie herself, running naked and picking flowers, but he runs away and sails off in his cradle. She then convinces Eamon that the seals are keeping Jamie to make the family move back to the island, so the two set about secretly restoring the dilapidated huts and gardens, all the while trying to figure out how to coax the grandparents back to Roan Inish.

The film is beautifully shot, by Haskell Wexler, with a lilting Celtic soundtrack, and the cast, apparently professional but largely unknown here in the States, plays it straight down the line, as drama not fantasy. Mr. Sayles never treats the audience as if we need convincing, nor stoops to treat the material ironically. It is simply assumed that we will abandon reason and suspend disbelief, and we’re quite happy to do so. The whole is infused with a sentimental longing for tradition, a sense that life has a proper order and we our proper places in that order, and a disdain for change that is positively reactionary and very refreshing. The viewer has no doubt that it is necessary for the Coneelly family, the descendants of the selkie, to live on Roan Inish and that the world is a better place with this balance restored. It’s all as anti-modern as can be and makes for a splendid old-fashioned movie experience, for the whole family or just for the adults.

GRADE: A+

A beautiful story, that captures the selkie legend with a touch of innocence.

John Sayles adapted Rosalie Fry’s 1959 novel: Secret of the Ron Mor Skerry (That now sells for three to five hundred dollars!) Haskell Wexler captured the rolling emerald pastureland, clusters of white thatched cottages and the mist rolling in from the sea on film so delightfully, you will find yourself longing to visit Ireland.

Green is the color of life, hope and joy. In this delightful story, Fiona is full of life, hopes to find her brother and experiences the joy of helping her family in their time of need.

Fiona (Jeni Courtney) loses her mother and younger brother and is sent to live with her grandparents on the Irish Coast. From the cottage she sees Roan Inish, an island where her family once lived. Filled with curiosity, she seeks every opportunity to explore the tiny island. Tales of seals that can change out of their skin and take on a perfect human form makes her even more curious. She feels a magical connection with one of the seals she sees while on a fishing boat.

The selkie in this story is a beautiful woman who marries a mortal, yet pines for the sea. She is trapped on land without her seal skin, which her husband has hidden. Ledgend has it that one of her children told her where the skin was hidden and she immediately put it on and returned to the sea, leaving her family, home and husband behind forever.

Fiona takes all the stories and finds she is experiencing some of the magic of the legend in her own trips to the Island of Roan Inish. Like all children, she still believes in magic and even though her grandparents don’t believe she has seen her brother, Fiona has

faith that she has not seen a ghost.

A lovely story to teach children kindness to animals and that no matter what happens in life, someone is always looking out for them.

This is a rare treat!

When I think Screwball comedies, one of the first that comes to mind is Green Acres. It was a show I watched as a kid but really did not come to appreciate until I was an adult. The writing on this show was absolutely brilliant. Poor Eddie Albert as Oliver Wendell Douglas was just a NY lawyer who wanted to live out his dream of running a simple country farm. Too bad he chose Hooterville, a town populated by some of the greatest screwballs of 1960’s television. From shyster Mr. Haney who sold them the rundown farm, to dimwitted Hank Kimball of the Dept. of Agriculture, Hillbilly neighbors the Ziffels and their pet pig Arnold…Oliver never had a chance!

The rapidfire jokes and sight gags predate by some ten years the style of the Zucker Brothers who would give us movies like Airplane and Naked Gun. Never a show to deal with sentimentality, this was pure wacky fun. A show that made the Nielsen top 20 ratings in four of its six seasons on CBS. It’s great to have these out on DVD and at such a bargain price compared to many new shows.

This set features the thirty episodes of the second season which would be their highest rated season as they finished #6 in the ratings. Here are a few of my favorite episodes:

Buy,Download, Or Stream Green Acres - The Complete Second Season! Click Here

“I Didn’t raise My Pig to be a Soldier” - The Ziffels go on a second honeymoon, so Oliver and Lisa babysit Arnold. During this time, Arnold gets drafted. Oliver tries to explain the mess to the draft board, but soon the FBI get involved. Mr Douglas, “the noted Hooterville Pig Attorney,” is able to clear up the situation and everyone is happy, except for Ralph, who finds out that she has been drafted.

“You Ought to be in Pictures” - Jim Stewart of the Department of Agriculture decides to make a film entitled “The Pitfalls of Farming,” starring Oliver. A mixed up phone call is placed, and the town mistakenly assumes that actor Jimmy Stewart is coming to town to put them all in the movies.

“A Square is Not Round” - Oliver has a chicken that is laying square eggs, but they don’t know which one. Mr. Moody the chicken breeder is willing to pay $1000.00, and 1/4 cent per chick hatched for the bird, so Oliver let’s him have them all. Lisa is upset, but not as upset as Mr. Moody who returns all of the chickens, since none of them seem to lay anything other than normal shaped eggs. The show ends with Oliver awaking the next morning to find it was all a dream…or was it?

“The Ugly Duckling” - Oliver refuses to pay his phone bill until the phone is taken off the pole and put into the kitchen. Ralph moves in with the Douglas’s while Lisa attempts to make her beautiful. Lisa tries to make Mr. Kimball jealous by making it look like Ralph has another suiter…Tom Blackwell, the telephone installer. Needless to say, at the end of the episode, Ralph has scared off both Mr. Kimball and the telephone installer, and the Douglas’s are left with no indoor phone.

This was just such a marvelous show and my appreciation grows for it with repeated viewings. It’s wonderful to have great old shows like this on DVD!

“Green Acres: Season One” was a little disappointing. Not because of the quality of the DVDs or anything like that. No, it’s just that the first season of the sitcom wasn’t very funny–or at least not in the sense that later seasons were funny.

The first season was heavily restricted to the sitcom’s original premise: a reverse of “The Beverly Hillbillies” (created by Green Acres executive producer Paul Henning and also aired on CBS). The humor was supposed to be generated by the fish-out-of-water city-slicker who lands in Hooterville with delusions about his agricultural aptitude. Comedy was to accrue from the city slickers’ attempts to fit into their bucolic setting.

Initially, eccentric Oliver Douglas was supposed to be the comic, and Lisa, his sophisticated wife, the “straight man” reacting to his abberant behavior and farcical farming. Oh, sure, it quickly became evident that she was a terrible cook whose gastronomic repertoir was limited to those horrible “hotscakes.” But she had a one-joke routine: she made poor pancakes. (It wasn’t until later that she concocted amusing variations on the theme, such as “hotscakes hash”).

Gradually, the premise began to change–and the show became a lot funnier. The new humor derived from the surreal goings-on in Hooterville, to which Lisa adopted and Oliver did not, resulting in complete role reversal: Oliver was the straight man, not only for his wife but for the entire psychotic populace of Hooterville. His big stupid grin (seen almost nonstop in the pilot) was replaced by screaming, scowling and sputtering as he struggled with situations that seemed like something right out of the Twilight Zone.

The change evolved through the first season–and was complete by the second season. So the second season DVD set is VERY funny.

Consider the following contents of the Season Two DVD set:

*Lisa nonchalantly observes that one of the chickens is laying cube-shaped eggs–and it’s total insanity from that point on as Oliver tries to come to grips with the square-egg phenomenon.

*Arnold the pig is drafted. No one in Hooterville seems to recognize that the porker is ineligible, and no one in the military bureaucracy seems capable of conceiving that the draftee is really a pig. “Noted pig lawyer” Oliver Douglas is the only voice of reason in the sea of ensuing insanity.

So if you were even modestly disappointed by “Green Acres: Season One,” you really must own “Green Acres: Season Two.”

If you like the Pink Panther cartoons, then you will like this one! The Pink Panther is cold and hungry on Christmas. He’ll try anything to get a hot meal, but nothing seems to work out for him (as usual). There is no dialog, but I think this just enhances the special. I also really love the songs! Its pretty funny and enjoyable. One drawback is the animation is alot like the other pink panther cartoons (which are fairly old) (Think: “Yes Virgina, there is a Santa Claus”) So its a bit crude and only a few colours are used (alot of the stuff seems overly pinky/orange). But its still great to watch and I love it! And the ending is cute too! Good for kids or any nostalgic adults.

It was surprisingly thoughtful of MGM to release the other two Pink Panther TV Specials here on this DVD along with “A Pink Christmas”! It’s not obvious from the cover or the DVD info listed that all three Pink Panther TV Specials are on this disc, but they indeed are. “A Pink Christmas” which aired on ABC Dec 7, 1978; “Olym-Pinks” which aired on ABC Feb 22, 1980; and “Pink At First Sight” which aired on ABC May 10, 1981 were all approximately 25 minutes in length. “A Pink Christmas” was adapted from a 1906 O. Henry short story called ‘The Cop and the Anthem’ (credited in the cartoon) and is a wonderful ‘haves and have-nots’ type story that makes a perfect adaptation to the world of the Pink Panther - it’s not an exact re-telling, the character in the short story is trying to get into jail so he can be warm and have food, while the Panther is on a quest for food, but he does try at one point to get into a jail. “Olym-Pinks” capitalized on the 1980 Winter Olympics that were held in Lake Placid, New York that year, and is a series of very competitive olympic games played between Panther and the ‘little man’ (as the animators referred to him). And “Pink At First Sight”, although aired in May of ‘81, is essentially a Valentine’s Day story. The studio could easily have only released the Christmas special and charged the same amount, but they used some foresight and gave we ‘completists’ a bonus with the other two TV Specials. While not having the ‘classic-ness’ (for lack of a better word) of the 1960s Panther cartoons, the specials are fun, and clearly the Christmas special is the highlight of the DVD and easily worth the price in and of itself. I remember when it first aired (I was 9) and it didn’t really repeat all that often over the years. And as a fan of animation, it’s cool to actually have it on DVD after nearly 30 years.

First let me make something clear: in order to like this series, there are a few things you have to accept. Such as, teenage boys have eyes, and find girls physically attractive. And, that this story pretty obviously must have grown out of the memory of a high school boy fantasizing about his teacher. And, Japanese writers sometimes are a little unrealistic with initial story setup, so just grit your teeth if the part where they get married seems a little contrived. It’s the rest of the story you want to see.

If you can get past these, you are going to experience one of the sweeter, and better written, love stories you will ever come across. It starts out a romantic comedy, pretty standard “magical girlfriend” fare along the same lines as “Oh, My Goddess” , and just as you are getting used to that, a much more complex and mature tale sneaks up from behind you and grabs hold.

A couple notes: I am a parent, and became interested in Anime again from watching DVDs first before deciding whether my children should watch them. I am not uptight about occasional nudity (a la Ranma 1/2) or “suggested” sex, but I do try to keep them away from situations where the sexual content is clear, or is central to understanding the story. For this reason, two warnings:

1) If you are more restrictive than I describe, you probably don’t want your kids to see this.

2) In any case, don’t let your younger kids watch the last episode. It is actually an “add-on” OAV that wasn’t part of the original TV series, and it isn’t necessary for getting plot resolution. At one point, a high-school couple are clearly having a romantic get-away in a “love hotel”, and another couple are clearly in a “bondage, S&M” situation, and another couple are clearly in a situation that would be statutory rape in the U.S. A little too much information for pre-high-school children, even in my liberal opinion.

I’ve long held the opinion that no matter what sort of film or television shows you enjoy, there is an anime out there for you. This is one of those series that proves my point. I am far from being a fan of typical romantic comedy fare as that particular genre of entertainment is beyond stale and redundant here in America, but I have found that anime has so much more to offer than just sex, violence, fantastic sci-fi, and over-the-top slapstick humor. There are some damn fine, truly romantic and touching stories in the anime genre, and this is one of them. While “Love Hina” and other romantic-comedy anime series’ have tempered their softer side with outrageous humor and outlandish characters to make their stories more, well, more anime-ish, “Please Teacher” shows remarkable restraint and -in spite of the teacher from outer space angle- keeps the sci-fi very light, the humor low-key and character-based, and takes a subtler approach to most of the characters that really helps to bring each of them to life. The engrossing story features many plot twists that you would never expect since so many series are content to run in place for fear of upsetting their fanbases *cough*RanmaInuyasha*cough*. One of the aspects of this series that really adds depth to the plot is the main character’s unique “disease”. When Kei becomes sad, he enters a comatose state of suspended animation -sometimes for years at a time- where he goes into his own mind to escape from the sadness he finds in his life. Through his experiences with his friends and, of course, his new teacher who through a bizarre set of circumstances he’s forced to “marry” (Ms. Kazami, possibly the most charming anime girl ever) he learns that there is no happiness without sadness for contrast, and that even if he stands still the universe will keep moving without him. These sorts of ideas and the way they are presented as integral parts of the story are what separate true classics from the throwaway entertainment crop. It also doesn’t hurt that the characters in the story are truly likeable. Ms. Kazami’s trademark phrase is hardly catchy (”This is priority one”) but her delivery of the line (in Japanese, anyways) makes it a pleasure to hear over and over, and don’t get me started on her chocolate candystick habit. These sorts of minor nuances make the difference between the characters you enjoy and the characters you truly feel for. The series ran for a far-too-short 12 episodes, but we are treated to a joyous epilogue that turns out to be the funniest episode of the whole series and really left me feeling happy that I’d given this show a try. If you enjoyed “Love Hina”, “Ah! My Goddess”, or “Chobits”, if you are looking for an anime that’s both inspirational and humorous, if you’ve seen enough of the giant robots, killer ninjas, and obnoxious slapstick humor that pervades more typical anime, or if you just want to enjoy a sweet, romantic story with some feeling and depth, then this is exactly what you are looking for.

The plot is a hokey whitewash of the careers of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, with characters talking in stilted phrases (”Gee, Larry, that’s marvelous, really and truly”) and complexities reduced to ground zero. But Rodgers and Hart comprised one of the greatest song-writing teams of the 20th century, and Words and Music (1948) is an excuse for a gang of Hollywood’s top performers to have their way with the tunes. Mel Torme croons a melancholy “Blu Moon,” June Allyson twinkles through “Thou Swell,” and a climactic ballet to “Slaughter on 10th Avenu” features Gene Kelly and Vera-Ellen in slinky, kicky form. As is often the case in MGM musicals of this period, Lena Horne steals the show with a self-contained sequnce (so it could be snipped out in theaters in the U.S. South), here contributing stunning versions of “The Lady Is a Tramp” and that most mysterious of American pop songs, “Where or When.”

The film’s sense of time is deranged: Perry Como plays an early friend of R&H, then decades later, himself; Garbo’s Camille is shown as a silent film, although it was released 10 years after sound came in; and the grown-up Judy Garland plays herself in a period when she would have been a child. The upside is that Garland romps through “Johnny One Note,” one of many examples of Lorenz Hart’s lyrical dexterity. Tom Drake is a dull Rodgers, but Mickey Rooney’s buzz-saw energy and crazed appetite might have made a brilliant Larry Hart. In a better movie, that is. –Robert Horton
