When 13-year-old Jessie (Denise Miller) goes to the Eddie Nova Guitar Institute, she’s stunned to discover her teacher is Michael (Rex Smith), a 17-year-old aspiring local musician she’d just seen play with his rock band at the local shopping mall–and with whom she was instantly smitten. Through the grace of makeup, Jessie can pass for 16, and she tells Michael that’s her age when he gives her a ride home from class one week. They start to flirt. When Michael invites her to a band rehearsal, they kiss for the first time; when he invites her to a drive-in movie, things start moving just a little too fast, and Jessie has to quickly decide whether or not to confess. Sooner or Later is full of 1970s schmaltz–Michael’s songs sound like a cross between Electric Light Orchestra and the Starland Vocal Band–but it’s also an extremely well written and deftly acted coming-of-age story. Both leads are excellent and the supporting cast is full of smart character actors: Judd Hirsch, Barbara Feldon (better known as “99″ on Get Smart!), and Lynn Redgrave. What could be an overdone teen potboiler is given humor and realism; it treats young love seriously but with perspective, and without a trace of condescension. A compelling tru story of a father who goes to court to fight for his right to keep his adopted daughter. Unable to conceive a child, Kim Lussier (Teri Polo) loses no time investigating adoption. To her husband, Keith (Andrew McCarthy), the adoption process seems like a remote possibility, until he sees a picture of his daughter to be, whom they name Brittany. When Kim is suddenly diagnosed with cancer, it seems that their dream of becoming parents may not come tru. But, she receives a positive prognosis and the adoption process continus. With Kim recovering from surgery and weakened by chemotherapy, Keith assumes most of the parental responsibilities when Brittany comes home. Then, Kim’s illness recurs and soon Keith is a single parent. With barely any time for Keith to grieve, the agency refuses to finalize his adoption of Brittany and places her in another home. All of Keith’s time and energy must now be devoted to preparation for the most important battle of his life. He lost his wife but he will not lose his child.

The 1999 theatrical feature of You’re Under Arrest turns the rather tame “fan service” comedy into a straightforward cop movie. After a year of training in other areas of police work, Miyuki and Natsumi return to Bokuto Police Station. In the broadcast series and specials, they went after panty thieves and peeping toms. This time, a gang of terrorists has obtained the plan for a simulated attack created for police training–and they’re putting it into action. Instead of the usual showers and locker room scenes, director Junji Nishimura offers outrageous chase sequnces involving patrol cars, motorcycles, boats, and helicopters. Miyuki and Natsumi save the day, but the fast-paced action can’t quite cover the gaping holes in the plot. The terrorists are thwarted, but never identified, and no one explains how attacking a small Tokyo police station is tied to sabotaging global financial institutions. Earth is a desolate wasteland in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Humanity has been decimated by an invasion of Phantoms, insubstantial aliens that extract and devour the spirits of living things. The few remaining humans have retreated to a handful of cities that are protected by massive bio-energy shields. The beautiful Dr. Aki Ross (voiced by Ming-Na) and her mentor Dr. Sid (Donald Sutherland) have discovered that the energy signatures of eight key Earth spirits can cancel out and destroy the Phantoms. With the help of Captain Edwards (Alec Baldwin) and his band of marines, they must scour the globe for the last two remaining spirits before General Hein (James Woods) manipulates the refugee government into attacking the aliens with an orbital laser that may also destroy the Earth.
Hironobu Sakaguchi’s film is taken from the popular Final Fantasy video game franchise, which is particularly well suited to film adaptation with its series of original stories, but the movie features entirely new characters and settings. And like Toy Story and Shrek, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is completely computer generated. Unlike those cartoon comedies, though, The Spirits Within is a serious science fiction drama with astonishingly human digital actors. Aki, the female lead, appeared in a full-page spread in Maxim magazine’s Hot 100 list–and was indistinguishable from the real-life models. The setting and conflict make for incredible action, but it’s the larger issus, character interaction, and human elements that really make the movie shine. The Spirits Within is not simply a science fiction movie, in the same way that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is not simply a kung fu flick. The result is a fantastic summer movie with better action and more emotion than Pearl Harbor, and actors more lifelike than those in that other video game movie, Tomb Raider. –Mike Fehlaur

Director Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead) tries gamely to recapture the exotic mysteries of spaghetti Westerns in this stylish but empty film, which stars Sharon Stone as a stranger who comes to the town of Redemption in time for an annual shooting contest. Her real motivations for being there are the stuff that might have found their way into a film by Sergio Leone–in fact, much of this film is a pastiche of Leone’s greatest hits, including A Fistful of Dollars and Once upon a Time in America–but one can’t quite believe Stone in the role. Gene Hackman gives a predictably solid performance as the town tyrant, and Leonardo DiCaprio is good as a lucky young gunslinger who gets to kiss the heroine. But not even the cast can help this failed project. Raimi brings a lot of razzle-dazzle to his camera work, but it doesn’t make the film any more substantial. –Tom Keogh

The Babylon 5 pilot movie The Gathering was originally broadcast in 1993 a full year ahead of the regular show. A somewhat dull tale of an attempt to assassinate Koch, the Vorlon ambassador to B5, the feature served to introduce Commander Jeffery Sinclair (Michael O’Hare) and Security Chief Michael Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle) as well as familiarize the audience with the uniqu environment of a five-mile-long space station in the year 2257. Missing many of the main cast, and suffering from a leaden pace and mediocre music score, series creator J Michael Straczynski later improved The Gathering by tightening the cut for a special edition (the version released on DVD), adding some deleted character moments and commissioning a new score from series composer Christopher Franke.
Four new TV movies were part of the deal to syndicate Babylon 5. In the Beginning is a prelude set 10 years before Babylon 5, telling the story of the Earth-Minbari war. Told retrospectively, many of the mysteries revealed gradually in the main series are recounted, making the show a collection of spoilers for newcomers while adding little for established fans. It is effective to see events only previously talked about, and enjoyable to have most of the main cast playing younger versions of themselves. River of Souls is a self-contained adventure featuring a return of the Soul Hunters from Season One, while Thirdspace offers a spectacular Lovecraftian space opera which slots into the saga after the end of the Shadow War. A Call to Arms is the most important of the TV films, laying the ground for the future TV series Crusade. Set five years after the Shadow War, it tells the story of a Drahk revenge attack on Earth. A final showcase for Bruce Boxleitner as Sheridan, the story fits between fifth-season episodes “Objects at Rest” and “Sleeping in Light.” The cliffhanger ending sets the scene for new starship Excalibur to boldly go on a five-year mission to explore strange new worlds and find a cure for the Shadow virus infecting the Earth. –Gary S.
