I just saw this film today (after missing out on a sold out sneak preview last weekend) and the increased level of expectation was met with one of the most rewarding moviegoing experiences I’ve had in the last five years. Monster House gives us one doozy of a spooky antagonist, a decrepit domicile of living malice that gobbles errant toys and passerby with equal ingenuity and viciousness.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Monster House! Click Here

The house is plain old MEAN, and for really small children perhaps a little too scary to take in a gigantic room filled with strangers and darkness. But for those of us who are too grown up for a nighlight this is perfect, creepy entertainment.

The same motion capture technology used to create The Polar Express (a film which I have still yet to see) is a very interesting and appropriate choice for this film, where the only truly fantastic element is the demented house that will not suffer trespassers. It works so well because the eerie realism that depicts the characters is so starkly contrasted with the insanity that ultimately drives the Monster House to be, well, so monstrous.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Monster House! Click Here

Now I fully expected to be entertained by the antics of the house, but I didn’t expect there to be much of a story. Again I was pleasantly surprised by what I think is a script that I believe is just as worthy of an Oscar nomination as the script for The Incredibles was. There is, beneath the floorboards of this film, more heart than horror. A tale of love, retribution, acceptance, forgiveness, and ultimately letting go.

Monster House is, beyond a doubt, one of the coolest Horror movies for kids ever made. A Halloween tradition in the making that dares to answer that age old question: Can a house be haunted?

The answer is a resounding yes with a disquieting post script.

Whatever is haunted may also be hungry!

Monster House uses the same motion-capture technology as Zemeckis’ Polar Express but takes it to the next level. This time around, the whole context of the movie will appeal to a wider audience so this is a great opportunity to display the possibilities that this all digital technology offers.

Beyond the technical achievement, Monsterhouse is an excellent surprise for its family-oriented audience. Unlike Dreamworks and their Shrek-ish, below-the-belt, cynically adult-oriented features, this movie aims at both the kids and grown-ups in a way that tends to unite them around its subject, rather than addressing the two categories separately and alternatively.

To kids, this will be their first experience of an actual horror flick: the house IS seriously haunted and this is definitly no Casper-like curse. Lives are at stake here and the line between good and evil is not so strictly defined.

Some aspects of the plot have a very macabre touch, still a bittersweet feeling comes in balance towards the end.

A real implication is required from the kids, especially because a few thrills awaits them once the house has awaken.

On the parents’ side, besides the fact that for those like me who grew up with the Amblin productions of the eighties (The Goonies, The Gremlins and co), you are in for a great back-to-the-future nostalgic trip. Not only because the action takes place in the 80’s (various hints lead to believe it)but because the whole atmosphere, the characters, the humour will either make you wish you could still be 5 to 10 years old to fully dive into this nightmarish story, or simply will make you forget you’ve grown older and make you actually feel like you’re a kid again.

So thank you Mr Zemeckis and Mr Spielberg for producing this little gem, which, though it draws its inspiration from a classic tradition of haunted mansion archetypes, never fails to find its own identity and energy.

In a nutshell: great style and screenplay, technically impressive and very concerned about offering a satisfying show to the audience.

Based on a novel by Yoshikazu Takeuchi, ‘Perfect Blue’ is one of those anime that successfully attempt the unexpected. Written and paced more like a Hitchcock film than the typical action film, this is a story where the psychological aspects are as compelling as the sometimes-ferocious action.

Mima Kirigoe is an idol singer, part of a moderately successful trio called Cham. Since the career life of these singers is, at best, a matter of a few years, Mima has decided to leave Cham to try her hand at being an actress. She lands a part in ‘Double Bind,’ a suspense thriller that will test her commitment in many ways, putting her in situations that some of her old fans find uncomfortable. This explodes into her life in a big way when Mima finds an internet website that purports to be written by her.

Whoever is writing the site knows too much about what Mima is going through, and she finds herself stalked by an unhappy fan that has developed a fixation on her. Soon people are dying in gruesome circumstances, and Mima becomes more and more confused about whom she really is and what is real. First time director Satoshi Kon is merciless, making sure that the viewer gets few clues about which reality is real and whether what one sees is in ‘Double Bind,’ ‘Perfect Blue,’ or in Mima’s mind alone.

This is really a remarkable piece of work. Great care is put into artistic and musical values. It has striking graphic qualities without the viewer ever getting the feeling that the images are overwhelming the story. In addition, I particularly like the imaginative use of color. Of course, the use of music is particularly important in a film about Japanese popular entertainment figures, and Kon makes sure that the film lives up to aural expectations.

This is a rough, gripping film. Violence, murder, and rape are depicted with the deliberate intention of making the watcher uncomfortable. It skirts the edge of being offensive, and is sometimes classified as hentai - animated pornography. It isn’t by my standards, but ‘Perfect Blue’ is graphic enough to offend some people. Take this into consideration before deciding to watch.

Anime can fall into apocalyptic (Akira), cutesy heroine (Sailor Moon), hentai (LA Blue Girl), samurai (Ninja Scroll), or mechanistic (Neon Evangelion). Perfect Blue is notable in that it does not fit in any of those well-trod genres.

After two and a half years of being lead singer with the techno-pop trio Cham, 21-year old Mima Kigiroe announces at a concert that she is leaving the group to pursue a movie career. One of the other members puts it more colourfully, that Mima has graduated from Cham. The move stuns her fans, but Mima sees her time there as wonderful, but felt suffocated by the innocent pop-idol image and that it was time to move on to newer things, such as her role in Double Bind, a psycho-thriller drama series where she plays the sister of a victim. Tadokoro feels that there’s “no place for pop idols to appeal to the masses.” Acting in this drama will be Mima’s “make it or break it” opportunity.

Upon the insistence of her agent Tadokoro to Shibuya, the scriptwriter, and the producer(?) Tejima, her role gradually increases, from the line “Who are you?” to something drastic, involving a traumatic scene Jodie Foster did in The Accused, only it’s the stage of a strip club and not on a pool table. Besides, it’s simulated anyway. This does indeed change Mima’s image, but Rumi Hidaka, her other agent and former pop idol, is upset and even leaves during that scene.

Mima has other problems. She comes across a website called Mima’s Room, which initially causes her amusement, as it details an imagined day in her life, “Someone sures knows me”–but when she reads some things that actually happened, she gets scared.

Mima is then confronted not only with those things, but with a version of herself as she was as Cham’s lead singer, wearing her Cham dress. This “old” version insists HERSELF as is the real Mima, which makes the real and “new” Mima an impostor. There’s also a sinister stalker, a mysterious hunchback with bad teeth that she notices and sees during her shooting scenes.

Meanwhile, people associated with promoting Mima’s new career move are getting brutally murdered, such as a photographer who took some nude photos of Mima for a magazine. For an anime, there is some detail in the photos shown that would not ordinarily be seen even in anime of this kind.

There is one puzzling aspect. Despite having a fervent following, it seems inconsistent that Cham never hit the charts, yet when Mima leaves, we learn that Cham debuted in the Japanese pop charts for the first time. Normally, when a key member leaves a well-loved group, a new sound and sliding sales result, (q.v. Spice Girls, Bananarama). Trivia: the fax Mima receives reads “uragiri”, which indeed does mean traitor.

Most of it is influenced by Hitchcock’s Psycho, but the violence of the murders recall Basic Instinct and Scream. Then there’s the blurring between reality and delusion explored in Vertigo (Hitchcock again) and Alejandro Amenebar’s Abre Los Ojos. Double Bind is similar to Silence Of The Lambs (modus operandus of the killer). The upbeat techno-pop and a trio becoming a duo also mirrors Bananarama, although the music is more Pet Shop Boys during their Very period. Then there’s the usual lead singer leaving the group for individual fame and more money, as was the case for Peter Cetera and Bobby Brown. And one need look no further than John Lennon and Rebecca Schaffer in terms of demented stalker fans. These influences entwine themselves to yield an exceptional thriller, with a likeable heroine (Mima) to root for, as she grows despite her traumatic experiences.

Three cheers for beautiful anime box sets. The format of the “Trinity Blood” set is so nice it’s almost like a modern illuminated manuscript.

But the pretty box is nothing compared to the story contained within.

The anime of “Trinity Blood” is a cobbling together of the stories in the light novels and the manga with an underlying plot involving the delicate transition between the conflict of the humans and the vampires to a balance of peace. It can appear to be haphazard in places, but overall the story follows a steady course to its conclusion and it has become one of my favorite anime.

The characters carry the events better than many stories I’ve seen. It is the changes in them that prove to be the most powerful points of the plot. Keep your eye on Esther and Alessandro, both of whom go through the most poignant transformations. My favorite scene in the entire show is towards the end when Alessandro blesses the little vampire girl’s pet rabbit. You see him realizing for the first time that he has the potential to change the world, and he wants to change it for the better. There is power in simple moments like that.

And then, of course, there’s Abel, who is just too weird to be believed. You find yourself completely engrossed in his character as he seems to flip back and forth from one aspect of his personality to the next in an almost schizophrenic pattern yet all the while perfectly maintaining his sympathetic humanity. I mean, watch this guy. He’s so goofy and then he transforms into this nightmarish super-vampire, chopping villains down with a giant scythe (complete with a choir in the background! It’s so much fun!).

Anime. Ya gotta love it. That kind of wild melodrama is all part of the awesome experience.

All the AX members have their own distinct personalities and they play off each other with archtypical perfection. Wordsworth the Bumbling Genius, Kate the Gentle and Stolid, Leon the Lovable Rogue, Hugue the Strong and Silent, Tres the Deadpan Android, Noelle the Elegant and Unrequited, Havel the Mysterious and so on and so forth, with Abel at the center as a kind of catch-all personality that they can bounce off of. It’s very entertaining.

And if you like big epics with big plots, this is the story for you. It’s beautiful to watch, full of elaborate backgrounds and animation. The history and mythology is complex and multi-faceted with all kinds of hidden surprises to discover. You get the impression that you’ve only just scratched the surface of what lies beneath. I’ve always had great admiration for stories like that. I never watch anime in Japanese. The subtitles are annoying. (I know, scandal to the purists) But I have nothing but good things to say about the actors chosen to voice the English version. I’d say the best performance is Troy Baker, simply because of the challenge of providing Abel with so many personality facets.

All in all, it’s just a very well crafted story, unique and fascinating. Best of all (in my opinion at least) the series ends with the opening of a new chapter in the mythos. Esther is crowned and she and Alessandro stand poised to reign in a new era of peace with the Methuselah. And Abel begins his ultimate quest to rid the world of the threat of his brother Cain and the Rosen Kreutz. I like to know that the story will continue, even if I might never know what will happen. It gives a sense of satisfaction to see one door close and another open.

(This does, admittedly, make the ending feel a little rushed and cut-off, but bear in mind that Sunao Yoshida died suddenly before he was able to finish the novel series. A writer collegue of his brought the series to an end with the last book but who knows if that would’ve been the end if Yoshida had lived.)

I’m glad to see “Trinity Blood” in a box set. It will be up to each person individually whether or not the story is to their tastes, but from where I stand it’s a story that no one will regret experiencing.

The animation in this is really top of the heap. If you are impressed with the box you won’ t be disappointed with the animation.

The box set this comes in is about as nice as you can get IMHO. The only other box set I own that is nicer is the complete box set for Basilisk. The packaging is done with remarkable thoughtfulness. It almost reminds me of opening apple products, almost.

The price is a bit heavy. But I think it balances itself out.

If you like Trigun you will enjoy this. Though the humor is toned down and this tends to be a little darker. I see this as a cross between Crono Cruisade and Trigun.

The story telling could have been a bit better but it was good overall.

I would argue that they didn’t really play items against each other well enough to really impact you.

An example of this (slight spoiler): Someone has a love interest in the main character and she dies. The main character’s mourning is TRIGGERED by the death of the beloved friend but is POWERED by his memories of someone else… how is that for an insensitive jerk! LOL

In the end his brooding doesn’t seem like a sincere act over the loss of such a close loved one.

That being said:

The action is good.

The humor is fun.

The overall artwork is just beautiful to look at.

The characters are developed well.

The music is solid.

Did I mention the art is just great?

The story concept is solid too. (An Uber vampire that feeds on vampires… fun little recursive cannibalism thing going on there.)

Would I buy this again? Yes.

Would I try to find it cheaper? Absolutely

Is it a solid show to watch? Yes

Will you be disappointed? I don’t think so.

I just recently saw David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet” on the big screen (and in widescreen) for the first time. Having seen it now in its original aspect ratio, I can’t bear to go back to my pan-and-scan videotape. Thank goodness that it’s coming out on DVD. “Blue Velvet,” quite simply, is the best film of the 1980’s; the only film that comes close to it is Scorsese’s “Raging Bull.” “Blue Velvet” was so ahead of its time when it was first released back in 1986. In fact, it remains so today, judging by the bewildered faces of people who were at the revival showing I attended. The film precedes “American Beauty” in blowing the doors off of the closet that Suburbia keeps its skeletons in, telling the story of a young college kid who, after finding a severed human ear, gets caught up in murder and mayhem in his hometown of “Lumberton USA.” Lynch goes to great lengths to set up his picture-book depiction of small-town American life (complete with bright red fire trucks, white picket fences, and blue skies) before taking a wrecking ball to it. Like he did in his debut, “Eraserhead,” Lynch shows us what we look like (tedium and all) but purposely twists our view of it, like a mad optometrist giving us the wrong eyeglass prescription. Apart from the fine directing, “Blue Velvet” boasts an excellent cast that delivers each line with patented Lynch-quirkiness. Kyle MacLachlan plays Jeffrey Beaumont like a modern-day Dante, travelling through the Inferno he never knew his hometown was. Isabella Rosselini is spectacularly disturbing as Dorothy Vallens, a lounge singer whose husband and son have been abducted. Her character is a first: a femme fatale who is more dangerous to herself than anyone else. And in what may be one of the top ten tour-de-force performances of all time, Dennis Hopper, as oxygen-huffing crime boss/hedonist Frank Booth, makes you laugh one minute, and cringe with fear the next after realizing that such a person probably does exist. You may not agree that “Blue Velvet” is the best film of the 80’s but you’ll have to do some digging to find one more original. It is a contemporary film noir classic that deserves to withstand the test of time like older noir classics such as “Double Indemnity” and “The Big Sleep.” So far, it appears to be holding up. It’s a strange world and “Blue Velvet” (both the film itself and the fact that it was made) is solid proof of just how strange it can be.

Although I was once inclined to agree with Roger Ebert’s dismissal of “Blue Velvet” as a shocking albeit skillful montage of pointless images and effects, I’ve had to do a 360 turnaround after seeing it on DVD and reconsidering it in relation to some similar texts. The film certainly makes sense in comparison with a quest narrative such as Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” and in light of Freud’s ideas about love as well as Nietzsche’s thoughts on the Dionysian self. It’s also a film that pays constant homage to Hitchcock’s best work, notably “Rear Window” and “Psycho,” in its preoccupation with spectator psychology.

The most important lines occur early in the film when the protagonist, Kyle MacLachlan, tells Laura Dern that he needs to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding Isabella Rosselli because “knowledge requires risk” but with the possible reward that “you might learn something.” By the end of the narrative, MacLachlan’s character should have learned a lot, but here’s where Lynch flinches, much like Robert Altman in the conclusion to “The Player.” MacLachlan emerges neither a sadder nor wiser man from his rite of passage and his descent into the dark corners of the psyche. Instead, Lynch cynically reprises the film’s innocent opening with its hopelessly artificial, Pollyannish, pastoral idyl that is most likely the preferred reality of the American mainstream movie consumer. At the same time, he preserves the tenuousness of such a naive vision with the shot of an insect impaled on a robin’s beak and with a soundtrack that subjects the theme song to a disturbing treatment out of some internal, subterranean sound studio.

The film’s meanings are inexhaustible, though a few important details should not be missed. Jeff confronts, first, mortality (his father stricken by a life-threatening stroke), then a severed, decaying human ear. The ear, the organ of hearing, is also the sense that fully awakens only in the dark, granting access to the Dionysian, deep intuitive wellsprings of the self. But the ear we see on screen has become a diseased, useless instrument in a “sunny” culture whose idea of music is Bobby Vinton’s version of “Blue Velvet.” Rossellini’s alternative version of the song, with all of its sensuous, alluring darkness, will draw MacLachlan in to the same degree that it repells girl friend Dern (contrast this relationship with that of Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly in “Rear Window,” where Kelly becomes increasingly drawn to the voyeuristic and “ghoulish” activity initiated by Stewart). Soon MacLaclan will discover the love substitutes embodied by both Rossellini and Hopper–the sadism and masochism, fetishism and scopophilia that, like it or not, are present in every son and daughter who has inherited from birth and learned from upbringing the pleasure/pain principle that underlies even the most well-intentioned, “selfless” love (the absence of any shown feelings between MacLaclan and either parent is another tip-off to the basis of his attraction to the dominitrix/sex slave character played by Rossellini).

As for the “villain,” the foul-mouthed Dennis Hopper did not seem so frightening or repelling to me on this viewing. If anything, he’s less the personification of evil than another version of insecure, overcompensating macho desire, perhaps better seen as a projection of the searching MacLachlan than as anybody’s nemesis.

Lynch must know the risk, and even believe in the necessity, of coming to terms with the feelings of a darker but far from inauthentic self. MacLaclan tells the naive, shielded and conventional Dern from the beginning that it’s extremely dangerous business. But the alternative is a Salem where everybody is “good,” a Lumberton where people get sick but never die, a Disney fantasy that can exist only in artificial movies. I still think that “Blue Velvet” (in fact, most any other film since 1980) is eclipsed by his own “Elephant Man,” where the camera takes us into the eye-hole and interior world of John Merrick, whose world we discover is also ours. But “Blue Velvet” is a more personal film, revealing not simply the mind of its creator but capturing a distinctively American experience.

Producer Chris Carter, for various reasons, chief among them being Fox’s probable insistence, has moved the entire production to California from Vancouver. This is notable as some of the scenery for the show changes to scenes in various western states and more prominently in the availability of bigger named guest stars. On the whole though, at least for this first season out west, these changes serve as an enhancement to the outstanding experience that is “The X-Files.” Season six is another excellent season that fluidly picks up where the movie, “Fight the Future” left off.

The mythology episodes:

“The Beginning” An FBI committee decides that yes, the X-Files will be reopened, they will not however, include Agents Mulder and Scully. Agents Spinder and Fowler will take that role, both with a huge helping of duplicity. AD Skinner is still on their side though and leads them towards a case that involves the Alien/Syndicate conspiracy. Gibson Praise makes a return as well. “SR 819″ Krycek makes a new appearance and he targets AD Skinner with alien created nanite technology.

“Two Fathers” & “One Son” Long awaited truths are finally revealed about the fifty year conspiracy between the syndicate and the aliens. The syndicate is all but destroyed by the alien rebels. Simply stated, these are the two episodes that every fan had been waiting five years for. No disappointment whatsoever.

“The Unnatural” I list this as a mythology episode, as it simply does not fit as a stand alone. This episode is singularly the best episode of the season as it contains some great humor and one of the most touching endings of the season. We are treated to meeting Arthur Dale or actually his brother, as he tells Mulder the tale of when he met his first alien.

“Biogenesis” As we learned in “One Son,” the Syndicate is gone and with it the Alien/Syndicate conspiracy. Now we’re treated to a new track on the mythology, as there still seems to be some sort of conspiracy evidenced by the discovery of an alien ship in Africa and Fox ending up in a loony bin. The conclusion will be on the Season Seven set.

Stand alone episodes:

“Drive” Our heroes run into a man who must continue moving west at a high rate of speed or his head will explode. “Triangle” a true X-Files classic as Mulder goes on a search for a ship that’s been missing from the Bermuda Triangle since prior to WWII.

“Dreamland & Dreamland II” Mulder and Scully take a trip to Area 51, where they run into the “Men in Black” and they witness a UFO which literally makes Mulder switch bodies with one of the MIB’s. These are simply two of the finest and most hilarious X-Files episodes of the entire nine year run. “How the Ghosts Stole Christmas” a beautifully well written episode guest starring Ed Asner and Lily Tomlin.

“Terms of Endearment” another extremely well written episode as our heroes visit Roanoke, VA and run across a bedraggled demon who is in search of a normal child. This episode has another one of those wonderfully well written ironic endings that only Chris Carter is capable of. “The Rain King” Mulder and Scully take a trip to Kansas to investigate a man who can supposedly make rain at will. This episode is replete with some of the series most hilarious lines.

“Agua Mala” Mulder and Scully take a trip to Florida in the middle of a hurricane to investigate a family’s disappearance and discover a sea creature. “Monday” this is an X-Files homage to “Ground Hog Day,” that is superbly written and played. “Arcadia” in this beautiful episode our erstwhile heroes pose undercover as husband and wife to discover why three couples have disappeared from a planned community.

“Alpha” Mulder and Scully are summoned by an internet friend of his to find a mysterious wild animal that has been shipped to the US that has killed two merchant marines and then disappears. “Trevor” is an intriguing episode in which Mulder and Scully set off to find a prison escapee who supposedly died in a tornado, yet he’s on the loose and exhibiting some interesting abilities.

“Milagro” this is an interesting yet horrifying episode in which a writer, fascinated with Scully moves in next to Mulder and begins spying on her. Meanwhile Mulder and Scully are investigating several deaths where victims’ hearts have been removed, but there is no evidence as to how. “Three of a Kind” the quintessential “Lone Gunmen” episode that just shines with a pure brilliance that may well have been the precursor to their short lived spin off series. “Field Trip” our two heroes end up in North Carolina and run into a hallucinogenic fungal mountain. This episode definitely breeches the different barrier, even for this series!

Special features - Included, as with the other season’s boxed sets, are some great special features to include my personal favorite - “Character profile on the Cigarette Smoking Man.” The cover art for the boxed set and DVD’s is fantastic as well. {ssintrepid}

The last truly outstanding season of “The X-Files” the complete sixth season ties up a few loose ends but the series begins to unravel in the process. The seventh season despite some fine episodes would suffer. While the eighth season would get a jolt of much needed energy from Robert Patrick the writing still wasn’t quite up to previous years. “The X-Files: Fight the Future” appeared during the summer between season five and six. The set, like the other reduced price sets from Fox, will include all the episodes from season six. You’ll be able to access special features for respective episodes such as commentary, deleted scenes and international clips.

“The Beginning” ties into the movie although the movie could stand independently on its own (which is just as well because despite some marvelous set pieces it basically was a rehashing of a number of alien movies). Mulder and Scully have been removed from the X Files and replaced by two new agents. One of the most interesting episodes includes “SR 819″ where Assistant Director Skinner is black mailed into helping an old foe. Skinner has been infected with some mysterious organism that this other person can control to make Skinner do his bidding.

Bruce Campbell appears as a philandering husband in “Terms of Endearment”. When his baby disappears and is apparently taken by a Demon Mulder and Scully are called in by local police to help with the case. Campbell gives an excellent performance.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The X-Files - The Complete Sixth Season! Click Here

The two part “Dreamland” is terrific with a great guest performance by Michael McKean (”Spinal Tap”). A black ops agent switches bodies with Mulder freeing him from his shrewish wife and stuffy lifestyle. Suddenly Mulder becomes a wild and crazy guy.

The humorous but suspenseful “Arcadia” plants Mulder and Scully in suburbia playing a husband and wife in one of those “planned communities” ruled by an iron fist. Houses have to be a certain color, portable basketball hoops are forbidden and residents who step out of line mysterious vanish or are killed.

Duchovny’s “The Unnatural” is a clever tale involving Arthur Dale (here played by character actor M. Emmett Walsh when Darren McGavin wasn’t available in a truly X-files twist), racism and baseball loving aliens set before baseball was integrated. Dale is assigned to protect a African American baseball player who’s life has been threatened as they tour the South.

“How the Ghosts Stole Christmas” is a funny and fun episode with guest appearences by Ed Asner and Lily Tomlin. Mulder decides to check out a haunted out on Christmas Eve and a reluctant Scully goes to check on him. The two get pulled into a surreal story which makes them doubt their own sanity.

For mythology fans the two episodes “Two Fathers and “One Son” closes out the main conspiracy arc of the last five years. While threads remain (and show up in the fascinating “Biogenesis”)many of the mysteries of the last five years are nicely wrapped up until we discover that there are aliens on Earth working beside us every day. To say more would spoil it and although it’s unlikely you haven’t seen it, I’d rather not spoil the conclusion and the set up for season seven.

I missed this film in its theatrical release (apparently it received limited distribution), but since it requires at least two viewings, it’s well-suited for DVD. It’s difficult to describe the story or even characterize it by genre, which shows how original the film is. Simply put, it’s about time travel, but it’s about a lot more than that, too.

The acting is consistently outstanding, with a list of well-known names in the cast, along with less familiar ones. Jake Gyllenhaal gives an amazing performance that is so convincing, you forget that he is acting; he IS Donnie Darko. While the story is mainly told through his eyes, the other characters are surprisingly sympathetic as well. This is not an easy feat for a script to accomplish, especially when the viewer must focus so much attention on every event. It would have been easy to create a one-dimensional hero and a bunch of villains, but writer/director Richard Kelly doesn’t take the easy way out.

Instead, we get a highly intelligent and challenging film that engages us as much as it baffles us, that injects enough humor to keep us from stress-overload, and most importantly, makes us want to watch it again and again, even after we know what’s going on. In this sense, “Donnie Darko” succeeds where other films have fallen short: for example, I enjoyed the complexities of “Memento”, but I was not able to identify or even care very much about any of the characters. The same was true of “The Usual Suspects”. Both are excellent films, but I viewed both from a distance, more analytically than emotionally.

I did not view “Donnie Darko” from a distance. I was drawn into the world that it creates, and enjoyed it enough to return more than once. A brilliant first film from Richard Kelly, who has set a very high standard for himself.

The DVD does full justice to this fine movie. The video and audio are excellent, and the extra features are quite thorough. I particularly enjoyed the commentary by Richard Kelly and Jake Gyllenhaal, which I listened to the second time I watched the film. They do a great job of helping the viewer to connect the dots. They also include just enough of the usual “behind the scenes” banter to keep the commentary from becoming too academic.

This DVD would definitely be included in any “desert island” list that I would ever compile. Strongly recommended!

Any form of media that makes you think has succeeded in what it set out to do.Donnie Darko is a film that succeeds on every conceivable level. The script is original and entirely unpredictable. There isn’t a single bit of action or dialogue, not one frame that can be anticipated. The characters, too, are refreshingly well-conceived and highly unique. And it’s a treat to see actors we know well (Drew Barrymore, who also produced, and Noah Wyle) stretch well beyond our usual expectations. There is great humor in this film as well as great sorrow. And, ultimately, it’s impossible to say if the entire scenario takes place within the dreams of a brilliant but possibly schizophrenic young man or if, as he so desperately wishes, he has, through physics, managed to reverse time.

Jake Gyllenhaal gives a stunning performance as Donnie. Even his body language–incurving shoulders, questioning eyes, uncertain smiles–reveal a vast, searching intelligence. Mary McDonnell gives yet another in a roster of thoughtful portrayals–this time as the despairing mother of brilliant and troubled Donnie, simultaneously loving and hating him for being emotionally beyond her reach. And Jena Mallone is just wonderful, one of the truest, most authentic young actors around today.

This is filmmaking at its best–an adventure for the mind–not to be missed.
Most highly recommended.

I adore this movie in a completely irrational, fan girl way. I know it’s corny, I know that some people will hate it, and think it’s stooopid. It fits the comic book style of punchy, fast action. Lori Petty quite effectively becomes the punk-girl she ought to be.

But like other reviewers, I am quite, quite disappointed in the DVD version of this film. From the trenches you hear grumblings that there was a lot of edited stuff that COULD HAVE been put on the DVD. Why don’t DVD makers do more than reprint what we already have on video for us to (silly consumers we sometimes are) just rush out to buy anyway? The picture quality of the DVD is not significantly higher than that of the video– the only real bonus is that you can do still pauses and get some cool screen shots for that conference paper presentation you’re doing… There is nothing more than the video on this DVD. Not even any nifty “Making of Tank Girl” footage, or sketches of other rejected cartoon scenes, or whatever! Even an oldie/goodie Cherry 2000 has more than this one, and surely the DVD makers could have done better.

I’ll just hope that Men In Black is correct, and someday, when we get the next alien form of media (I guess I’ll have to buy the White album again) the next makers of whatever futuristic thing we’ll all have to rush out and buy will heed this advice– put more on your big media! There’s no real reason for me to excercise my insane consumerism if you don’t fill up my big old plate!

Tank Girl is, make no mistake, a campy B sci-fi. It lives up to the genre perfectly, keeping a light, humorous tone in a world so dark that it would make most of us hide under the bed. It’s probably no surprise that someone like Tank Girl would survive the apocalypse.

Lori Petty’s character is perfectly witty, a girl who plays it large and in charge even when things are at their worst. She can kill an armed man and then answer the irritated stares of his buddies with “What?” While McDowell’s character tries to break her in for a mission, she spends all her time coming up with lines to really get under his skin–and succeeds.

The complaints of some accusing McDowell of hamming up the role of the villain are unfounded; he not only plays the role perfectly, but does it so well that I don’t think anyone else could have done it. He’s playing the stereotypical megalomaniac bad guy, yes, but on top of that he adds a touch of class and intelligence. His repartee with Tank Girl proves he’s nearly a match for her wit with flippant remarks. He’s a very bright guy with an ingenious solution to an ongoing problem, who’s simply flummoxed by the dauntlessly rude spirit of his opponent. McDowell is brilliant enough as an actor to get all these characteristics across. Bravo.

The plot gives us a nice, reasonable adventure without being overly simplistic; the campy tone prevents it from getting any more complex. The off-the-wall antics of Tank Girl bleed over at times from the character to the movie itself, which gets a bit goofy (in a good way) in parts where you’d never otherwise expect it to. In the middle of the film they break into a musical number in the silliest of venues–it might not be logical but it’s a whole lot of fun. All this is carried along by a soundtrack pretty well suited to the film, arranged appropriately enough by Courtney Love.

For sheer entertainment (though not a family film, if that wasn’t obvious), Tank Girl is really worthwhile. The DVD is noticeably light on features, but for the price I can live with it. If you enjoy a movie that doesn’t take itself seriously, Tank Girl is for you.
