Just before doing “Lord of the Rings,” director Peter Jackson (who can be seen in a cameo as “Man with Piercings”) made an off-kilter horror/comedy movie called “The Frighteners,” the tale of the undead and the guy who makes a living off of them. Though “Frighteners” was barely in theaters at all, this cult flick is funny, creepy, well-acted and wonderfully directed.

Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox) has seen spirits and apparitions ever since the car crash that killed his wife. Now he operates an amateur “ghostbusting” operation that is supposed to exorcise ghosts from people’s houses — the problem is that the ghosts who haunt those houses are in league with him (Chi McBride as the opinioated afro-ed Cyrus, Jim Fyfe as the nerdy Stuart, and most of John Astin as what is left of The Judge).

Frank’s business certainly isn’t hurt by the fact that for years after a serial killer’s murderous spree, people have died mysteriously of heart attacks. Then Frank starts seeing fiery numbers emblazoned on the foreheads of people who will die, including the husband of doctor Lucy Lynskey (Trini Alvarado). As if trying to stop a specter of death weren’t hard enough, crazed FBI agent Milton Dammers (Jeffrey Combs) believes that Frank is the one murdering people. But the evil specter is still killing — and Lucy is the next victim.

Peter Jackson once said that he has a “moronic” sense of humor, and it shows up in all its glory here — from bug spray dissolving a ghost’s face to a piece of talking oily sludge to a drill sargeant ghost with submachine guns, this is weird and absolutely hilarious. It’s the perfect blend of comedy and horror.

But he’s also good during the more serious moments, such as Bannister’s flashbacks to his wife’s death, or the eerie sight of homicidal young lovers dancing with a gun. The opening shot is pure Jackson, with the camera swooping through a window, past fluttering curtains, and though a hole in the attic floor to a screaming woman below.

Jackson also takes the opportunity to poke a bit of fun at more conventional ghost movies: the big Gothic house, crazy old lady, ghost in ’70s clothes, and Fox’s hilarious turn as a ghostbuster. Nothing horrific is sacred. “There ain’t nothing worse than a bunch of pissed-off brothers… that’s ALREADY DEAD!” Cyrus yells at one point.

Does it have a flaw? Yes — the opening scene doesn’t seem to make much sense later on in the movie. But Jackson makes up for that with a surprisingly tight, coherent plot, and a satisfying finale that makes more sense than most other horror movies do.

The cast is brilliant, whether it’s the twitchy, wild-eyed FBI agent, or the three weird ghosts. Michael J. Fox does an excellent job as Frank, with the right combination of cockiness and pathos, while Alvarado is solid as the idealistic young doctor. But the scenes are reallystolen by Dee Wallace-Stone and freaky-eyed Jake Busey, as homicidal young lovers.

The second episode: No more Rules - The ring gets destroyed by Cell, now the fight will end with only one left standing, Who will it be?
The Last episode on the DVD: The Fight is Over: What looks to be a very nice victory is cut short and Goku is running out of energy, with this said a new Z fighter is about to enter the fight as Goku steps down, Who is it?
The rest of the Cell Games now will have plenty of fighting and finally it will all be avaiable on DVD, I recommend this DVD as well as the rest, you won’t be disappointed.

Although I hope the people that are dissapointed with the Brando films being released…I do not think it is fair to blame Universal dvd for releasing what they are ABLE to! This collection is excellently priced and carries with it some very gems, which the average movie viewer may not have seen. This also offers the viewer different looks at the talent of Brando:

The Ugly American (Brando does drama), a look at how other countries view the U.S. - and a story that is interesting to watch through the lens of our current relationship with Iraq.

The Appaloosa - (Brando does western) a western in the “spagetti” genre…good story, and very entertaining.

A countess from Hong Kong…(Brando does comedy)…directed by Charlie Chaplin! Appears to be more of a 40’s screwball comedy, it holds up and is funny and entertaining. Chaplin’s son, Sydney is hiliarious in one particular bar scene and one can enjoy the cameo of Charlie himself as a ship’s steward.

The Night of the Following Day - (Brando does a Hitchcock-like thriller) a taught thriller with a “never looked better than this” Brando involved in a kidnapping plot.

All in all this is a marvelous collection, especially for those who do not have any of these films. One would expect to find any of these titles alone at around $15 each so the price of less than $20 is an added bonus!

1.) THE NIGHT OF THE FOLLOWING DAY (1968 — 93 minutes): This is an ultra-realistic crime drama featuring Brando as one of four professional criminals who kidnap a girl (a young Pamela Franklin) and hold up at a beach house in France. Richard Boone stars as the fiendish member. Jess Hahn plays a likable loser, the brother of the pathetically drug addicted Rita Moreno. Filmed in France. At the time of this picture Brando was 44 years old and NEVER looked better physically — very trim and blond. Brando didn’t start getting fat until the later-70’s when he was well into his 50’s. In other words, people need to quit envisioning Brando as some fat dude; most of his life he WASN’T. Most men in their 40’s would kill to look as good as Brando did at the this age. Personal Rating: 4/5 Stars.

2.) THE UGLY AMERICAN (1963 — 2 hours): This is another ultra-realistic film, an impressive political drama featuring Brando as a new American diplomat in a Vietnam-like SE Asian nation that is painfully struggling between capitalist & communist factions. Eiji Okada plays the country’s revolutionary leader, a previous best-friend of Brando who has become brainwashed by the communists. Shot on location in Thailand. The ending expertly depicts how the average American is unconcerned with the political conflicts of other nations. Personal Rating: 3.5/5 Stars.

3.) A COUNTESS FROM HONG KONG (1967 — 108 minutes): It’s fun to see Brando in an atypical role in this silly slapstick romantic comedy. Sophia Loren stars as a Russian countess who stows away in a rich American’s (Brando) stateroom on a cruise liner to escape a life of forced prostitution. Teppi Hedron is also on hand. This was director Charlie Chaplin’s last film; he went into a depression after its box-office failure. The problem I have with this flick is that it’s completely set-bound on the cruise liner; in fact, practically the entire film takes place in Brando’s quarters. Personal Rating: 2.5/5 Stars.

4.) THE APPALOOSA (1966 — 98 minutes): This is Brando’s ’spaghetti western,’ released at the height of this sub-genre’s popularity. John Saxon stars as the villain who steals Brando’s horse after severely beating him up while in a drunken stuper. Ajanette Comer plays the babe. The Southwestern scenery is spectacular! The best way I can describe this film is to imagine one of Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns as if it were actually any good in terms of story. Let’s face it, although Leone introduced a cool new style to the western genre, his film’s STORIES were honestly quite unmemorable. If you disagree, try sitting through “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” in one sitting without falling asleep. Or how about the two “Dollars” movies? I’ve seen them both a couple of times and can’t remember anything about their actual storylines. “The Appaloosa” is essentially a revenge tale entailing Brando’s trip to Mexico to get his horse back and kill Saxon. I wasn’t all that impressed with the story the first time I saw it, especially since I understandably compared it with Brando’s western masterpiece “One-Eyed Jacks” (a powerful precursor to the spaghetti western). The story in “The Appaloosa” is rather slow-paced and uneventful, with few action scenes. I saw it again recently and it dawned on me: The director and writer were NOT shooting for a run-of-the-mill western. In the mid-to-late 60’s it became fashionable to make films as gritty and ultra-realistic as possible (disregarding Sergio Leone’s westerns, which often contained goofy elements). Such was the case with “The Night of the Following Day” listed above (and to a lesser extent “The Ugly American”); this is also the case with “The Appaloosa.” What would happen in REAL life if a man went to Mexico in the late 1800’s and tried to retrieve his stolen horse? This picture shows exactly what might happen. Consider, for example, the cliched confrontation-in-bar-leads-to-fight scene; we naturally expect it to end in a brawl or shoot-out. It doesn’t. In other words, it boldly sneers at western conventions. Or how about the final shoot-out with Saxon? Some have complained that it’s uneventful. Yet, isn’t that often the way such death-duels end in REAL life? I’ll put it this way, don’t expect “The Appaloosa” to play like a Hollywood blockbuster or typical spaghetti western with corny one-liners and unrealistic or goofy action scenes. Personal Rating: 3.5/5 Stars.

Despite the fact that none of these films rate 5/5 Stars, I rate the collection itself 5 Stars because it’s a fantastic assemblage of fairly obscure Brando works (I never saw ANY of these pictures prior to getting this 4-pack).

Most people rave about Brando’s famous films “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “The Godfather” and “Last Tango in Paris.” Personally, I’m not a fan of any of these overrated pictures, even though I admit “The Godfather” is a good film and can see why some regard it as great. In my view, believe it or not, every film in this 4-pack collection (with the possible exception of “A Countess from Hong Kong”) is better than these.

If you want to witness how incredibly charismatic Brando was as an actor, check him out in any on these magnificent pictures: “Apocalypse Now” (the original 1979 version), “Mutiny on the Bounty” (1962), “One-Eyed Jacks” (1961) and “The Young Lions” (1958).

There are movies that are released that you think will be good, movies you hope will be good and movies you want to be good. On occasion it happens. But for the most part, as with MUTANT CHRONICLES, it never quite makes the mark.

Based on a role playing game, the basic outline was there. Fans of the game though have complained at the changes made. In any event, we are presented with a world of the future ruled by four warring corporations constantly in battle. During the latest conflict, a seal set in the ground is broken and an army of zombie like mutants, each with one single spear-like arm, is unleashed.

History reveals that this seal was put in place by a religious order when an alien spacecraft descended to Earth and began changing men into these mutants. Nearly defeated, man conquered this invasion and sealed the machine in the ground. The order maintained a book telling the tale as well as preparing for the day the seal might be broken. That day is now.

As mankind heads off planet to Mars, Brother Samuel (Ron Perlman) puts together a rag tag group of misfits who man be the planet’s last hope. Former combatants are now untied to save the world as instructed by the chronicles. Armed with a secret bomb they don’t even know how to use, they head deep underground towards the machine with the hopes of destroying it.

Among this group are the lesser characters, those that you know are just fodder for the mutant horde to follow. But the natural leader of the group is Mitch Hunter (Thomas Jane) who seems cynical to the extreme but whose humanity shines through at the oddest moments. Along the way he saves a group of survivors and later attempts to rescue his old commander from the mutants.

The mission is much like those seen in team flicks like THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and THE DIRTY DOZEN. It’s a suicide mission at worst and a chance for redemption and salvation at the end at best. Each team member has a reason to be here since each was given 2 tickets to get someone off world. Now it’s up to them to save this one.

The movie itself is well made, the special effects extremely well done for being made on a shoestring budget. The look and feel of this world is both threatening and interesting at the same time. And the gore, while CGI created, flows when slashes and explosions come forth. But at the same time it feels kind of hollow.

The actors involved were enthusiastic about the project as seen in the special feature where they appeared on a panel at last year’s Comic Con to promote the film. And their performances are pretty good. Yet something is missing.

This is not to say you won’t enjoy the film. It does offer and action-adventure flick that will keep fans watching. It offers science fiction fans a look at a steam-punk world of coal driven spaceships and blast cannons. And it does entertain. And yet…

I may be in the minority. I recall a world in the sixties where the outlook of science fiction was one of hope. We watched STAR TREK which showed us a world of possibilities and co-operation and equality, where there were no bounds that we couldn’t overcome. And yet in the late 70s and early 80s that changed and suddenly we were shown a future where cities had fallen, people wore rags and the heroes were few and far between.

This movie falls into that latter category. Perhaps that’s why I can’t say it’s great. Perhaps that’s why I can’t say I loved it. Yes, I enjoyed it and yes it was entertaining. I would recommend this as one to watch but as for adding to your collection? Perhaps not.

As for the blu-ray aspects of this film they come into play with the sharpness and clarity offered. Every item on screen is crystal clear from the drops of rain that overflow in the films opening sequence to the drops of blood that fly when during the final battle with the mutants. Does it enhance anything from the movie itself? Probably not. But then for me at least, the clearer the picture the better.

Mutant Chronicles finally makes its way to DVD and Blu-ray, and despite some negative press surrounding it, the film as a whole isn’t so bad at all. Taking place in the distant future where Earth is run by four warring corporations, a race of mutants is awakened and begins laying waste to everything and everyone in sight. Spiritual elder Brother Samuel (Ron “Hellboy” Perlman) thinks he knows how to lead humanity to salvation, so he gathers a crew of soldiers for a suicide mission. Most notably among them are Thomas Jane (The Mist, Hung) as rugged soldier Mitch Hunter, and Sin City’s Devon Aoki; and they all make their descent to save the world. While Mutant Chronicles is capably directed and features CGI effects that range from halfway decent to Sci-Fi Channel (or is it ScyFy Channel now?) quality, the film’s biggest flaw lies in its pacing. The first half of the film is sadly boring, but it does manage to pick itself up for the second half, and doesn’t let go as the film races towards its conclusion. Jane and Perlman are good, and despite the dim lighting, there are some fairly decent action scenes to be found here. All in all, Mutant Chronicles isn’t anything special in the least, but it is definitely worth a look for sci-fi/action fans at the very least.

Director Terrence Young had introduced us to Bond in DR. NO and FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. Guy Hamilton then took us down the GOLDFINGER road, and while his attention to action made that the first SMASH Bond film, he also seemed to lose alot of the more down-to-earth flavor that made the first two Bonds so much better.

But, Terrence Young returned for his final Bond film, and somehow managed to provide the perfect mesh of the realistic Bond from the first two films, and the more action-oriented Bond of GOLDFINGER. The result is a very happy marriage indeed - it’s just too bad there were very few legitimate children born of it!

THUNDERBALL contains all the great locales, villains, and Bond coolness that we love, without getting into the ridiculous, gadget-filled territory of the later films. It introduces us to our first true Bond femme fatale, and also gives us the first really interesting Bond girl in Claudine Auger’s Domino character.

The music in the movie by John Barry is very nice, high-lighting the slower pace of much of the film. This movie is longer than the previous three by almost 20 minutes, and it is a nice extra cushion to really build the tension. In fact, Bond is largely absent from the first 45 minutes of the movie, and we finally see more of the villians plans - what they are and how they are being accomplished - in almost meticulous detail. Somehow, this makes the threat more real. Speaking of the threat, the plot being about terrorists stealing nukes and demanding ransom to prevent blowing up an undesignated city, is as fresh as today’s headlines!

The only real gripe that can be levied at the film is that Connery does indeed seem a little less interested in the role than he had been. I think he’s still mostly on track here, but he’s missing the total devotion that he showed in the first three films.

That aside, THUNDERBALL is simply the best Bond - offering everything that makes Bond great, and eliminating all the over-the-top sillieness that made the later films so excruciating to sit through!

THUNDERBALL (1965) the fourth of the James Bond 007 series is among the best of the films. As a follow-up to the phenomenally successful and definitive GOLDFINGER, THUNDERBALL is just a shade less satisfying. In terms of tone and composition the two films are of an era in the James Bond mythology.

Sean Connery returns as the inimitable British Secret Agent, this time set against SPECTRE Agent Number Two, Largo (Adolfo Celi). SPECTRE has stolen an atomic bomb and is holding the world hostage.

Largo is a worthy adversary. Strongly-built, silver-haired, wearing an eyepatch, and more physically intimidating than Gert Frobe’s plump Goldfinger, Celi’s Largo lacks the faintly tongue-in-cheek air which animated Goldfinger’s behavior. In fact, the entire film lacks the decidedly humorous undertone of GOLDFINGER. The villains are more vicious, and Connery’s Bond, his wit more honed than ever, is playing for keeps.

The theme song (with Tom Jones singing), plot and story are at least on a par with the predecessor film; however, the action, based in the Caribbean, takes place largely around, and under, water, and the film drags deplorably during most of the underwater sequences despite the fact that one of these is the climactic fight scene. The change in tempo between land and undersea action is jarring and detracts from the movie in a manner that its innate excellence in other respects cannot compensate.

Of course, Bond successfully seduces just about every woman on the set (except for Miss Moneypenny, the Penelope of the series). While he is able to win an ally in Domino (Claudine Auger), he is less successful with others, though as he admits, after all, it is “all for King and Country.” What a sense of selfless sacrifice the man has!

THUNDERBALL was later remade as NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN in which Connery, still trim, fit, and feisty (but with toupee) returned to the James Bond role after more than a decade’s hiatus. The remake is great to watch as a counterpoint to the original.

While THUNDERBALL is not as much fun as GOLDFINGER, if all subsequent Bond films could have been as good as THUNDERBALL, even Timothy Dalton would have been a tolerable 007. Let’s give this one FOUR AND A HALF STARS.

This is a factual naval aviation story, intermixed with Army Air Corps rivalry and combat scenes. It provides a chronological view of one naval family- their love and adversity, including Navy and Army aviators supported by their loyal maintenance personnel who helped in the advancement of U.S. military aviation during 1920s to 1940s. Add, of course, a mixture of competition provided by the navy wives and their only rival- the United States Navy. Released 22 February 1957, The Wings of Eagles was considered an adult story, wrought with the thrills, laughter, and family hardships all to well experienced by the real heroes of this story- the pioneer naval aviation wives (there is still no “Hall of Fame” dedicated to these gallant ladies at the National Museum of Naval Aviation, NAS Pensacola, FL).

Ms. Maureen O’Hara who acted the gallant part of Mrs. Minnie (Bryant) Wead was well received by the “naval aviation wives of gold”, and was nominated at a Naval Aviation Cadet Recruiting Officers Convention, Long Beach, CA, as “Ms. Naval Aviation- 1957.” Other familiar actors included: John Wayne (CDR Frank “Spig” Wead), Kenneth Curtis (RADM John “Johnny” Dale Price), Dan Dailey (Chief “Jughead” Carson- loyal Chief Aviation Machinist’s Mate), Kenneth Tobey (characterization of Lieutenant Jimmy H. Doolittle), Ward Bond (representing Hollywood director John Ford), Edmund Lowe (RADM William Adger Moffett, USN- Chief, Bureau of Aeronautics), and Charles Trowbridge (representing ADM Ernest J. King) whose one line was: “I like it…write it up”. The railroad boxcar scene, the hangar fly-through, the various odd aircraft shown, the newsreel aviation reports of winning the Schneider Cup of 1923, the loyal efforts and contributions by the aviation maintenance personnel keeping the aircraft flying were all real events. Today’s aspiring military aviators may find this aviation story of much interest.

This story may bring tears and some fond memories back to those pioneer naval aviation wives who are still around and had experienced it all. Their stories can relate back to the days of sugar white sands at Santa Rosa Island and of Coronado Beach; the babies they lost from the 1919 flu influenza; the open-air jalopy rides down old Warrington Road and Coronado Avenue; the screened front-porch bungalows of Bay Front, Pensacola, and Coronado Island; the seaplanes skimming across Pensacola and San Diego bays; meeting their husbands as they landed in their squadron fighters and torpedo planes following short at-sea flight operations aboard USS LANGLEY (CV-1); followed by the many naval aviator and bridge parties given at Mustin Beach and North Island officers’ clubs- all this on just a naval Lieutenant’s salary (with flight pay) to make ends meet during the Great Depression.

This is an MGM/ John Ford contribution to those “naval aviators in leather skull caps”- he did this well, focusing on the triumphs and tragedies often found within the War and Navy departments during the development of our country’s military aviation. This was also Ford’s tribute to Army-Navy aviation camaraderie- America’s early combat teams. Seen here are episodes of Army-Navy departmental budget rivalries; around-the-world “beat the Navy” Army Air Corps celebrations; CDR Wead at the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during 1942 - 1943; combat films compiled by CDR Ford, USNR (Chief, Field Photographic Branch, OSS- worked for William “Wild Bill” Donovan, Director of OSS); and, the story of how CDR Wead got production approval of new “jeep” aircraft carriers on converted cruiser hulls- with the approval of ADM King and President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941. There is combat footage aboard carriers- a reenactment of CDR Wead aboard USS YORKTOWN (CV-10) as Chief of Staff/ Operations for RADM Charles A. “Baldy” Pownall, CTF-50, during the Gilbert and Marshall islands operations.

Interests in making this film concerning CDR Wead began with correspondence between Vice Admirals John Dale Price, Calvin Thornton Durgin, and John Ford. Ford received first priority from the Department of Defense (DoD) to film a story about CDR Wead, months ahead of an attempt by Warner Brothers Pictures Distributing Corporation. Priority permission to Ford was granted by Donald E. Baruch (Chief, Motion Picture Section, Pictorial Branch, DoD). The film was to be based upon historical material from DoD, tales from Price and Durgin, earlier correspondence received from CDR Wead, and a book by “Red” Futhven & Jerry Stagg titled “Staircase”. The public has seen this magnificent Ford tribute to CDR Wead since 1957. A newcomer to this film might ask- who was this naval aviator called Spig Wead?

CDR Frank Wilbur Wead, USN, acquired the nickname “Spig” during his Naval Academy days (1912 - 1916). He accumulated 9 years & 7 months total sea service prior to his accident. Together, Lieutenants Wead, Price and Durgin received their aviation wings 22 May 1920, NAS Pensacola, FL. Later, LT Wead led the U.S. Navy Schneider Cup Team to England and brought this famous cup to America aboard S.S. LEVIATHAN, October 1923. With LT Price they broke five seaplane records, 11 - 12 July 1924. Along with fleet exercises aboard USS LANGLEY with VT-2, there were staff duty assignments under Admirals Moffett and Joseph M. Reeves, and with 11th Naval District Commander. Wead wrote for leading magazines (The Saturday Evening Post and The American Magazine) and Hollywood during 1930s to 1940s. His final assignment was as commanding officer of VF-2. During WWII, he acquired combat duty aboard USS YORKTOWN, receiving the Legion of Merit (Combat). CDR Wead was relieved from active duty 21 July 1944, at Fleet Air, Alameda, California, where his last naval boss was RADM Pownall (Commander Air Force, Pacific Fleet).

The accident: Tragedy struck Wednesday morning, 14 April 1926, during heavy electrical storm over San Diego and Coronado. Combination of power outage and hurrying in the darkness, LT Wead accidentally tripped, falling down dark stairway, fracturing his neck. This occurred in a two-story home he and Minnie recently rented: 600 9th Avenue, Coronado, CA Today, one can still see this home corner of 9th and H avenues.

Not your typical John Wayne war picture it shows the amazing chemistry of Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne it does seem that these two could never go wrong. This movie is no exception. It starts as John Wayne is learning to fly the first planes in the navy in a hilarious barn busting scene. At times it has a very Gomer Pyle feel to it at other times it has a Last Days of Patton feel.

The Transfer is descent for its age doesn’t seem to have been given anything special, though that’s not surprised when you think of John Wayne this isn’t the first movie to come to mind, the audio isn’t in 5.1 but it’s not a movie that lends itself to needing it. As most of the movies of the 1950’s it has that parent trap look too it, which to me ads to the charm of the movie. Of course let’s not forget John Ford Directed it.

In conclusion for 10 bucks it’s a great DVD to own. For John Wayne fans its must to complete there collection this comes from someone who is partial to Wayne’s westerns but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The packaging it’s a typical plastic case which is great to me. Its single disc nothing fancy just like the duke plain simple and to the point.

The video begins with a brief look at various 1960’s era civil rights protests and the violence that often followed such demonstrations. Using footage (much of it somewhat raw) shot during the marches and demonstrations and narrated by Peter Jennings, the montage of video “highlights” of the 1960’s civil unrest provides a strong setting for the showing of MLK’s “I have a dream” speech at the foot of the Lincoln Monument.

The video does not show the entire speech, but it does present enough to gain a good understanding of its content. Perhaps the single most important reason to watch the video (as opposed to reading a text version of the speech) is to witness King’s change in tone, demeanor and style as he reaches the end of the speech. As he begins to call for “letting freedom ring” he abandons his notes and begins to seemingly speak extemporaneously, and the passion in his voice begins to rise. It is a powerful visual, lost in any textual version.

The video concludes with a brief explanation of the assassination and memorial service.

I have heard reference to this famous speech many times over the years but I had never seen the entire speech. After seeing the entire speech for the first time it was easy for me to conclude that this is the best speech ever given by any public speaker with respect to: -sense of urgency created -references for all stakeholders -appropriate emotion and sincerity -skillful use of voice (tone, inflection)

I recommend this speech to anyone who is interested in seeing a very skilfull speaker. In addition, the subject matter of the speech is moving and relevant to many of the issues facing America today.

Ok, let me get this straight. They made a documentary about Al Gore giving a lecture? About global warming? Okay, I’m already asleep. Snore. Yawn. Why don’t I just stay home and save the money I would spend to take a nap.

All kidding aside, if you know anything about Al Gore, you know this is a subject he is extremely committed to and passionate about. Very passionate. And after five years of some of the worst, most harmful environmental policy to ever come out of Washington, DC, there is no better time for “An Inconvenient Truth”.

I know many consider Gore to be less than a captivating speaker. But in “An Inconvenient Truth” he comes across as a different man because he is so passionate and committed to the subject of global warming, he comes across as a different man. Informed, knowledgeable, conversational and persuasive, if he were like this during the election, there would be no Florida Recount in our history books. Okay, so that didn’t happen. But the result is that Gore, much like Clinton and Carter, are trying to do something with their status to help better the world. Gore has long been an environmental advocate and it shows. He knows the facts inside and out; people have provided him with statistics, graphs, charts and more, and he uses them in this presentation.

As Gore states, he has given the lecture more than a thousand times around the globe. Because of this, he is extremely comfortable addressing large audiences, giving them a lot of scientific research to digest. Remarkably, he makes it easy to understand, pointing out key facts, walking us through some of the more difficult to understand ideas and problems. He also knows when the audience needs a break and interjects humor here and there. At one point, he shows a spoof of an educational film animated by the people at “The Simpsons”. At others, he makes fun of himself and his political ambitions and woes.

Davis Guggenheim, the filmmaker, has apparently presented Gore’s lecture virtually intact. As Gore moves around on a dais, clicking for the next slide, he makes persuasive points. But he also reaches a couple of key points. When this happens, the filmmakers smartly pull back from the lecture, giving us a portrait of a few key moments in Gore’s life. The argument he makes in his lecture is persuasive, intelligent and well thought out, but because we learn more about the man making the presentation, these points have even more resonance. Not only do these moments give us more details about Gore, they also provide a respite from the scientific data, allowing us to absorb what we have learned.

At one point, Gore states that the data is irrefutable and it appears to be. Remarkably, the filmmakers show footage of various people attacking Gore, or claiming the data he is presenting is not based in fact. Yet, we can see it for ourselves, right in front of us. And I am sure Gore could easily provide a bibliography of resources for us to check out all of the facts he uses. What would drive some of these people to attack Gore and this data? Some of the clips are from Gore’s days as a Senator and Vice President, so some of that can be contributed to political parties trying to one-up each other. But currently, Gore does not hold political office, yet the current administration seems intent on giving every break to the worst polluters in the country, allowing them to make as much money as possible while they pollute and pollute and pollute. Gore shows a slide about this argument. Apparently, there is the thought good environmental policy will impact the economy. How do these same people explain the relationship between Toyota, Honda, Ford and GM? Toyota and Honda manufacture vehicles with far better gas mileage than their competitors and are much more successful because of it. An argument Gore makes very convincingly.

Thankfully, Gore stays away from political bias. More or less. A couple of times, he makes funny remarks about his failed run for the presidency, or he makes a pointed comment about the current administration, but by and large his comments are directed at us and what we should do to save our planet. The film isn’t void of bias, but there could certainly have been a lot more. The fact the filmmaker and Gore showed some restraint makes his presentation even more persuasive.

The film ends with a series of `calls to action’ as the credits begin. Frankly, these aren’t needed because Gore’s arguments are so convincing. But they are effective. As one call to action states “Urge everyone you know to see this film.” Well, folks, that’s what I am doing. Go and see this film. We need to do something before it is too late to do anything. Hopefully, this film will one day be viewed as a historical document of the beginning of a great change and not as a horror film.

When I was a child, people clapped at the end of movies — we knew that the filmmakers wouldn’t actually hear us, but we showed our appreciation nonetheless. Over the years, it seems that tradition has died out. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone clap at the end of a movie for twenty-odd years. Until, that is, this afternoon.

It is all too rare to see people act out of idealism and ethics. Those qualities shine throughout this film — Al Gore has noticed a problem — a BIG problem — and he has learned about it, and is trying to solve it. The “news” media gives us little 15-second soundbites instead of news and arguments, believing that we, the American public, are too stupid to comprehend any non-trivial ideas. Gore, on the other hand, clearly has faith in us to UNDERSTAND, to do the right thing, and, above all, to CARE.

See it.

LOST ROOM is an intriguing, thought-provoking science fiction mini-series which was shown on the Sci-Fi Channel from December 11th to the 13th in three parts: “The Key and the Clock,” “The Comb and the Box,” & “The Eye and the Prime Object.” This show offers up a neat-concept, sci-fi mystery that’ll keep you guessing and glued to the set; and the good news, so far, is that there’s nary a mention of that played-out plot about space aliens conducting experiments on unsuspecting Earthlings, a card which I was half-expecting this show to play.

Here we go now with TONS OF SPOILERS: In the 1960s, a mysterious event transpires at the Sunshine Motel in Gallup, New Mexico, off the famous Route 66. Since then, various everyday objects that had been in Room 10 of that motel - objects numbering around a hundred and now scattered to the winds - seem to have inexplicably gained vast and wondrous powers (a comb that freezes time for 10 seconds when run thru one’s hair, a pen that, when clicked, microwaves your enemies, a radio which, when tuned to the right station, grants 3 inches of height, a deck of cards which will disable onlookers, a nail file which induces sleep, etc.). A belief circulating underground is that a grouping of these objects will cause them to exhibit new properties and grant their owner god-like powers, even possibly allowing the owner access to the mind of God… Inevitably, over the past decades, disparate groups have sought these objects for their own varying purposes. Which then brings us to the show’s protagonist: Joe Miller.

In the course of investigating a baffling case involving two men found burned to a crispy death in a pawn shop, Pittsburg homicide detective and single dad Joe Miller (Peter Krause, SPORTS NIGHT, SIX FEET UNDER) comes upon a magical motel room key which, when used on any convenient door, gives him access to an eternally sun-drenched motel room frozen in time since the 1960s. Miller discovers that, from this motel room, he can reach any destination he calls to mind. He learns of another odd quirk of the room: no matter what he does to it or in it, the room resets itself to its original composition the next time he enters.

His digging of clues leads him to an eccentric named Wally (Peter Jacobson), who owns a bus ticket which teleports whosoever is smacked on the head with it. Wally proceeds to unload pertinent info on Miller regarding the motel room and the amazing objects which had been occupying it. Wally further informs Miller that these indestructible artifacts are drawn to each other, then warns him that people will soon come looking for him - “bad people” who are desperate to possess the key. Rapidly after, Miller’s quest for truth finds focus tragically close to home when his charming, young daughter, Anna (Elle Fanning, Dakota’s younger sis), vanishes in the mysterious Room 10.

In his efforts to find his daughter, Miller becomes hunted by his fellow police, who come to believe that he has kidnapped Anna; he also runs afoul of other organizations - various shadowy cabals, some of them despicable and ruthless, bent on collecting the items to gain incalculable powers (such as the determined Karl Kreutzfeld’s group) or to talk to God (such as the nutjob Order of Reunification) and the Legion, a supposedly more benevolent group who seeks to protect humanity by destroying these items. Miller must evade the clutches of the cabals and remain vigilant against the Legion as he drastically attempts to unearth the history of the enigmatic Room 10 and the Sunshine Motel. Things get more chancy as it seems the only way to retrieve his daughter is to ferret out the Primal Object, the controlling item which holds dominion over all the other items. But which one is it? Can the aid of several quirky characters and the beautiful Jennifer Bloom (Julianna Margulies, ER), who seems to have secrets of her own, be enough for Miller to survive and gain back his daughter? Well, with the possibility of an ongoing series on the Sci-Fi Channel, I’d bet on it.

Viewers seeking a quick and easy resolution to the mystery will be disappointed here as the mini-series concludes with plenty of questions left unanswered. In fact, the last half hour of Part 3 engages more in launching new plotlines than in closing the book on existing ones… again, paving the way for a regular series. The cast is pretty darn good. Peter Krause as the desperate Joe Miller plays up just the right amounts of panicky fatherhood and resourceful detective and does it with a relatable, down-to-earth panache. Kevin Pollak plays the cold and deadly, mob-type boss, Karl Kreutzfeld, with charm and civilized vindictiveness. Pollak, a comedian turned very capable actor, makes you actually feel compassion for his character once you find out his real motivation. Sleazy operator Howard “the Weasel” Montague is played with zest by Roger Bart, while Elle Fanning (Dakota’s younger sis) is okay as Miller’s cute kid. I do feel that Julianna Margulies could’ve done more with her part; she seemed quite disinterested in the goings-on, but I acknowledge that her role was pretty thankless.

The powers-that-be made a good decision in allowing the involving story to become the star of the show, as opposed to bludgeoning us with multiple, flashy special effects. As it is, the effects that do pop up are nicely executed and are perfectly in tune with the story. The budget must’ve been nice.

As I’ve mentioned, this mini-series is intriguing, and part of the intrigue is that it deliberately chooses to leaves holes in its storyline. Part of whether the viewer ultimately sees this show in a positive light will depend on his or her reaction to the barrage of questions that are left unanswered. The series is wagering that the audience will be so caught up in the mystery that it ultimately chooses to support it. LOST ROOM will have those inclined thinking in philosophical and metaphysical terms, and there might be a bit of quantum physics thrown in that mix, too. And for we lesser mortals - who just aren’t built towards intellectual ponderings - fear not; there is enough steady infusion of uneasy alliances, betrayals, plot twists, action, and cool f/x to satisfy our craving for low-brow entertainment. Now, I don’t know how well this premise would work as a regular television series; there’s a danger that things might get too predictable and stale after a few showings. I’m assuming that each episode would involve the hunt for an empowered object, and really, how many curve balls can you throw to make that consistently interesting? But wouldn’t it be nifty to find out?

I really enjoyed this Sci Fi miniseries. It was an original concept with a well developed plot and generally good acting. Being from western Pa, I enjoyed the fact that it was set in Pittsburgh. I won’t describe the plot, that’s already been done in previous reviews. So let’s describe the DVD. I had recorded the complete series, but enjoyed it so much I decided to spring for the DVD. Now you would assume that the manufacturer would take the time to insure all the features, menu options, etc. worked as displayed on the screen. You would however be wrong. I knew I was in trouble when removing the security stickers. There is so much glue on them that you get a thick layer of sticky goo on the top and bottom of the DVD case. Great start. When you load Disc 1, you get some previews for some other Lionsgate productions. A Bermuda Triangle (another Sci Fi miniseries) preview is included and the transfer looks like it came from a VCR. Anyway, you get though this stuff (the menu button is disabled) and are presented with THE LOST ROOM. There are 4 “episode” radio buttons and a Play All radio button. As you step through these, you will note that the “highlight” doesn’t match the radio button. (but surprisingly, go to an episode and back and it does) As noted in another review, the Play All button does not work and takes you back to the previews. Really frustrating. However, the worst part, is that the video transfer quality is horrendous. I am so disappointed, I haven’t even bothered with disc 2. So be warned, if you buying this because you enjoyed “The Lost Room”, you will be really disappointed in lack of effort Lionsgate put into this DVD. Director Sydney Pollack delivers megawatt star power, high gloss, and political passion to The Interpreter, his first thriller since The Firm. With Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn delivering smooth, understated performances, the film more closely recalls Pollack’s 1975 Robert Redford/Faye Dunaway paranoid thriller Three Days of the Condor, trading conspiratorial politicians for potential assassination in the United Nations General Assembly (this being the first film ever granted permission to use actual U.N. locations). Kidman plays a U.N. interpreter who inadvertently overhears hints of a plot to kill the reviled, tyrannical leader of her (fictional) African homeland; Penn is the Secret Service agent assigned to protect her, or to determine her role (if any) in the assassination scenario. By distancing itself from real-life politics, The Interpreter softens its potential impact as a thriller about contemporary globalization and threats to international peace, but the Penn/Kidman personal drama (between two people who gain a deep appreciation for shared anguish, without being artificially forced into romance) adds a richly human dimension to Pollack’s expert handling of the thriller elements of a complex yet easily-followed plot. Indie-film stalwart Catherine Keener shines in her supporting role as Penn’s sarcastic by sympathetic Secret Service partner. –Jeff Shannon
