This is the suited Muhammad Ali. I was hesitant to win this DVD at first, because with its flimsy cardboard box it seemed a quickie release. What tipped the balance for me was the HBO logo on the box — produced to their boxing division’s highest quality, this is a staunch winner.

The 1964 Liston-Clay fight in Miami has already become epic, even though the fight itself lasts objective six rounds. Here on disc, with every second preserved, is Clay’s taunting the champ, then momentarily losing his vision (did Liston rub liniment on his gloves? ) . Shockingly, Liston quits on his stool before Round 7, and Clay shouting into the camera, “I’m a dreadful man! I shook up the world! I shook up the world!”. No actor sincehas been able to recreate the rawness of this moment. Presented on DVD is the closed-circuit theater version of the fight, called by Steve Ellis, with color commentary by Joe Louis in between rounds. This is, of course, not Louis’s finest hour.

Next is Foreman-Ali in Zaire in October, 1974. Famous here are the color commentators: Ali friend and broken-down football star Jim Brown, and longtime Ali rival (and, they say, bitter enemy) Joe Frazier, along with the sinful David Frost. The fight itself is also the stuff of yarn (and an Oscar-winning documentary) . Ali invents the “rope-a-dope” seemingly on the hover, and wins the fight without ever seeming injure by massive George Foreman’s punches. The fact that 20 years later, Foreman would be champ and Ali would be seriously impaired, adds only a bittersweet irony to the finale.

The final fight is Ali-Frazier III in Manila, the Thrilla in its entirety. Along for the commentary stride are entertainers Hugh “Wyatt Earp” O’Brian, and Flip Wilson — whose presence at ringside is revealed only by his repeated assertion that “Frazier is starting to smoke now!”. Most engaging, ancient Ali rival Ken Norton delivers an profitable blow-by-blow analysis for lead man Don Dunphy.

If you know Ali, you’ve seen these fights already, but the DVD presents a modern digital opportunity to put a question to them again, punch by punch, word by word, from ringside ceremonies to Ali’s impromptu post-bout conferences (the world has missed his repeated expend of the word “Moose-lim”) . I could inquire of the decision to recall most of the fresh TV graphics and impose a running clock over every second of every round of every fight, but these digital additions befriend more than they damage.

The menus are simple and easy to navigate. The key extras here are the fighter biographies (of Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Liston, and also Archie Moore and Larry Holmes), and subtitles. This latter addition makes it easier to invent out what the analysts are shouting over the action, particularly Louis and Dunphy.

The final feature is a 1981 documentary, produced by HBO in the days before they were famed for that sort of thing. It’s a travel through Louisville, Kentucky, illustrated by some footage, but mostly calm photos of, Ali’s matches from pro debut to brutal beating at the hands of Larry Holmes. The hour seems more a space-filler on an already packed DVD, and predates both Ali’s final defeat at the hands of Trevor Berbick, and ascendancy to global icon region in the ’90s. However, you’ll delight in the dated ‘81 graphics and soundtrack.

If you are considering the fourth season of King of the Hill for your DVD collection you are probably already a fan of the show. The fourth season has some of my favorite moments from KOTH. Cotton’s horror as he finds out that his newborn son is leaking milk, Connie having her period while staying with the Hills, Hank’s thanksgiving turkey being destroyed by a bomb squaud at the airport, Peggy’s feet being featured on a foot fetish website, Bobby seeing his female cousin naked for the first time, and the whodunnit murder of a very minor character voiced by Reese Witherspoon. These episodes are great without question but what is up with the special features department? The first two seasons had it all, comentaries, animatics, deleted scences, easter eggs, the whole shebang. But when I purchased the third season it was as if they put the release together the night before it came out. There were absolutley no special features, nada, zilch, zip. The discs were the double sided kind, and the artwork on the packaging sucked. It took only a few months between the first and second releases and we got two awesome sets, but it took another year before the third season was released and we got stiffed big time. But now it is time for season four to be released and I’m getting worried that it will be a repeat of the rush-job we got for season three. I already know it is going to be 3 double-sided discs and it is coming out only 4 months after the previous release. I just hope Fox doesn’t do this half-assed. I would be willing to wait a few extra months to get this DVD if it would mean getting it done right.

As with anything that gets better with time, King of The Hill is possibly one of the best adult animated series out there. Surrounded by fellow alley-way bumpkins, Hank Hill’s life is far from the everyday, ordinary, Texas American. With Dale’s nuerotic antics, Bill’s lovable yet pathetic slothness, Playa’ pimp Boomhauer, know it all-know nothing wife Peggy, burst out into song, open minded son Bobby, this is a cast of characters which one doesn’t outshine the other. Truely a hilarious series and one worth collecting.

The series is created in a similar style as “Blue’s Clues” and “Dora the Explorer” in terms of the main character interacting with the viewer. “MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE” features Mickey Mouse as the main character communicating with his friends and then occasionally looking towards the viewer for help in a variety of adventures.

Mickey Mouse uses a variety of tools and a compass to help them solve their problems and get from point A to point B.

For this DVD release of “Mickey’s Big Splash”, the theme revolves around the Summer time. The episodes features a total of four episodes (24:05 minutes each) which include:

1. Donald’s Ducks - This bonus episode features Mickey Mouse, Pluto, Donald Duck and Goofy. As the two hang out at the clubhouse, they hear ducks quacking. The group finds eight ducks that need help getting to the beach for the Winter. Using Mickey’s mousketools, the viewer must help Mickey decide which tools can be used to help get the ducks to the beach.

2. Pluto’s Bubble Bath - This episode features Mickey Mouse, Minny Mouse and Pluto. With Pluto playing outdoors, he’s gotten muddy and thus he needs to get a bath. Using Mickey’s mousketools, the viewer must help Mickey decide which tools to use for a bath. But when the bubbles start to grow and become more powerfu, Mickey and Pluto are caught in a bubble and taken high above the planet and the viewer along with Donald Duck and Goofy must find a way to get them down.

3. Mickey Goes Fishing - Goofy is going on vacation and has to leave his kitten, Mr. Pettibone with Mickey. But somehow all Mr. Pettibone’s gooey fish must have fallen out of the box when Goofy stopped by and now Mickey and the viewer must find a way to get more fish to feed Goofy’s kitten.

4. Pete’s Beach Blanket Luau - The temperature is quite hot and Mickey and friends want to cool down. Pete invites Mickey and his friends to come to his beach blanket luau at Star Lake. Mickey asks the viewer if they can help him and the friends setup a luau at the beach.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE” features colorful CG animated episodes for the children. Nothing too detailed but simple and clean enough for the young children to enjoy. Presentation is in Full Screen and an aspect ratio of 1:33:1.

As for the audio, audio is presented in Dolby Digital Surround Sound plus French and Spanish language tracks.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The DVD comes with a game called “Fun in the Sun with Mickey and the Gang Game” (featured only in English). As the group is setting up the luau, the viewer can use their remote or computer mouse to help Donald Duck select items that don’t belong on the beach.

JUDGMENT CALL:

“MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE” is a straightforward DVD release for parents to have their children watch (or assist the children in helping them make decisions).

Each of the four episodes are family friendly and include Mickey Mouse and many of his friends during the Summer. From helping ducks get to the beach, Pluto getting clean after stepping in the mud, Mickey going fishing for food for Goofy’s kitten and helping set up a luau at Star Lake.

The DVD is targeted towards parents who have children that are around 3-5 years old and each episode is educational and enjoyable with the storyline being adventurous, fun, humorous but yet simple, straightforward and non-frightening.

So, the series is toddler friendly and yes, even the character of Pete is in his good behavior and friends with Mickey Mouse and the others and also encourages the viewer to help out as well.

If you are a parent looking for a DVD that can be educational and fun for your young children and/or looking for a DVD that allows for parents and children to work together as a team, you can’t go wrong with “MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE: Mickey’s Big Splash”. Definitely give it a try!

This ORIGINALLY THREE HOUR LONG film was extended for Swedish Television a couple of years after its release. I’ve seen both versions and must say that the story makes much more sense in the five hour version, and I hope that’s the one we eventually will get. However, some stuff (15 to 20 minutes or so) could have been left out in the extended version without having affected the story line, but all shots are nevertheless enchantingly beautiful. Bergman has said that this film (apparently his last for cinema) sums up all his work as a director, and I have no doubt that his career in film couldn’t have ended on a higher note. The movie is flawless and powerful, plus on DVD we’ll be able to watch it in the widescreen format!

The Criterion Collection is currently working on two separate editions of the Ingmar Bergman masterpiece Fanny and Alexander. The theatrical edition ($29.95) presents the Academy Award-winning 188-minute version of the film in a two-disc set with audio commentary by film scholar Peter Cowie, a collection of introductions by Bergman to eleven of his films, and an assortment of trailers. The special-edition five-disc boxed set ($59.95) includes the complete contents of the theatrical edition as well as the five-hour director’s cut of the film, Bergman’s own feature-length documentary The Making of Fanny and Alexander, a new 40-minute video of exclusive interviews with cast and crew, and Ingmar Bergman Bids Farewell to Film-a one-hour filmed interview with the famed director. Look for both editions of Fanny and Alexander in November!

“The Mummy” receives a very nice look Blu-ray transfer for this new edition of the movie. Capturing the adventurous elements of films like “Indiana Jones” and injecting it into the basic story for the 1932 film “The Mummy”, Stephen Sommers creates a terrific, enteraining film. For those interested in a synposis of the plot, I’ll provide it at the end of the review because you’ve probably already seen this.

The Blu-ray transfer looks quite good here with bold colors that more closely recall the original theatrical presentation than the DVD. The image is crisp and while there’s evidently some digital noise reduction applied, Universal hasn’t completely cleaned away all the film grain which is a good thing because when that’s done you actually lose sharpness and clarity (it is restored with a loss of detail via Edge Enhancement like the recent reissue of “Patton” which went overboard with digitally cleaning up the film). The best thing that Universal could have done here was to leave the grain intact and dispense with the Edge Enhancement. I suspect that the same source was used for the Blu-ray as was used for the HD-DVD edition but that the Edge Enhancement is more transparent here because of higher resolution.

What does all of that mean? The film looks extremely good but could look brilliant. Still, on the whole this looks much better than the DVD edition.

The extras are still presented in 480p (which is standard DVD definition)so be aware those haven’t been updated. However, Universal has made this a U-Control disc where you can customize the extras as you watch the film (something developed for and carried over from HD-DVD). You do get the ability to watch the visual commentary/extras while watching the film. All of the original extras from the DVD have been ported over for this edition. All of the extras and the film are on the single disc edition here (unlike the DVD which has most of the extras on a second disc).

Followed by the equally entertaining (and much bigger production of) “The Mummy Returns” and a fun entertaining (if lesser)spin-off film “The Scorpion King”, “The Mummy” is worth picking up again even if you have the original DVD edition. Highly recommended.

Oh, and the plot? A group of explorers led by Evelyn (Rachel Weisz)and Rick (Brendan Fraiser)rush to find the riches of an Egyptian tomb and end up reviving Im-Ho-Tep (Arnold Vosloo)an Egyptian High Priest buried alive for his part in a conspiracy to kill the Pharoah. Brought back by the Egyptian Book of the Dead, Im-Ho-Tep takes revenge on those who plundered his tomb and seeks the Book of the Dead to bring back his beloved princess who helped him kill the Pharoah.

It is a great popcorn flick.

No doubt about it, this is a sharp flick. All the ingredients come together to make this a very entertaining film. Naturally there’s plenty of action which takes place against some great sets and is enhanced by impressive special effects. But there’s also a good deal of suspense (as you would expect in a Mummy movie), and plenty of humourous one-liners as well.

It’s sort of like a ’90s version of Indiana Jones and will probably be considered just as much a classic in years to come.

This movie is excellent. Fans of the classic Pooh cartoons (”Blustery Day,” “Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree,” “A Day for Eeyore” and the like), and of “The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” will love it. Wonderful songs embellish this perfectly created Pooh story. Some complain that it is dark, scary, and such. Certain parts are, but definitely not overly so. It’s necessary to the plot and the message of the film; not every second is ‘terrifying’ and even for young children, no scene should be too ’scary.’ The sad emotional quality of this movie sets it apart a little bit too, but again, it is not too sad for kids, nor is it much more ‘depressing’ than many other Pooh tales. There is a happy ending with a fun song just as should be expected. From beginning to end ‘Pooh’s Grand Adventure’ is truly grand and should not be missed; the only possible problem I can see is the disclusion of Gopher!

This and THE TIGGER MOVIE are the two best Winnie The Pooh movies.

Here we have POOH’S GRAND ADVENTURE: THE SEARCH FOR CHRISTOPHER ROBIN (UK title: Winnie The Pooh’s Most Grand Adventure). The animation is definitely television standard, but the story and songs are of a very high quality indeed.

big screen film THE MANY ADVENTURES OF WINNIE THE POOH left off. Winnie The Pooh and Christopher Robin are hanging out together. They enjoy each other’s company. They can do anything and nothing together as bestest friends. The next day Christopher Robin goes off to his first day at school. He leaves a note on Pooh’s hunny pot so Pooh will know where he is. Unfortunately the hunny somehow falls on the note making the letters and words on the note hard to read- not that Pooh and the gang could read anyway. Due to this, Pooh and friends believe the word “school” says “skull” and that Christopher Robin has been kidnapped. Thus they begin a perilous journey across the Hundred Acre Wood.

The message of this movie is made very clear for young and old alike. And I don’t mean because it says it on the video packaging. It really resonates with all of us- at least it did with me. I remember it very well- “You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think”.

I hope you yourself, get to discover this little movie that is so much bigger than it seems.

I’d been waiting years for this to be released on DVD, it’s a fabulous movie, my absolute favorite adaptation of the original play - however, MGM messed up.

This edition is a matted letterbox, which means that it’s actually a 4:3 TV image with the full image reduced to fit on the screen of a traditional TV screen and has black mattes on the top and bottom.

However, it should have been presented in anamorphic widescreen - which gives the same presentation on a 4:3 TV but also fits a widescreen television set.

As it is, it will not display properly on a widescreen tv - the image is either stretched out (so that everyone and everything is flat) or is enlarged beyond the border of the tv screen - thus cutting off the subtitles! My wide television has 6 separate display formats but I cannot format a full image on my screen that is not warped or severely cropped. Extremely disappointing.

I’m hoping for a new true anamorphic widescreen edition to be released eventually, but at least I have the film for now.

Note: French with optional English and Spanish subtitles.

This French language film adaptation of the classic ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’ released in ‘90 is without question the most enjoyable 138 minutes in front of the television screen I’ve experienced in quite some time. Everything about this production is absolute perfection; cinematography, settings, music, screenplay and of course acting.

Gerard Depardieu is an unstoppable force of nature as the eloquent but hot-headed Cyrano. He thunders and rages about one moment only to suddenly turn ethereal and wax poetic the next. The lovely Anne Brochet is a wonderful complement to the blustering Cyrano as his unattainable Roxane and Vincent Perez delivers a strong performance as the handsome but slow tongued Christian.

The dialogue is crisp, textured and witty, however if you’re French impaired as I am you’ll probably have trouble keeping up with the subtitles. But that’s OK, you’ll just catch the missing parts the next time you watch and you will definitely watch again and again.

The days of paying an arm and a leg for G1 Transformers episodes are over. Shout! Factory, LLC, in conjunction with Hasbro, has released the complete first season of Transformers: The Original Series, and it’s a good product! It’s also at a good price, which those who have paid extremely high prices for earlier releases (such as myself) are sure to appreciate.

Packaging: 4 out of 5

It would have been nice if the packaging received the royal treatment that the original He-Man and She-Ra cartoons received; however this is not so bad. Clean, fresh artwork printed on a metallic coating gives the box a highly attractive and modern look; the discs are safely encased in two slim DVD cases (made of soft, shatter-resistant polypropylene), each of which boasts 2-sided artwork visible through the sleeves and the translucent packaging.

Integrity To The Original Episodes: 5 out of 5.

These are the episodes the way I remember seeing them; on VHS tape from my local video store, with a high level of faithfulness to the original sound and visuals. Those familiar with the Rhino releases earlier this decade may be pleased to hear that the *original* soundtrack is presented here (remixed in stereo) without any additional sound effects. Care has also been taken to reconstruct the show’s visuals; “Heavy Metal War” in particular has been restored to its original greatness, after a painful stint on the Rhino collection, on which the episode was marred by poorly-chosen takes replate with visual errors.

Episode quality and encoding: 4 out of 5.

Each DVD is 7.6 GB in size, and every byte appears to be taken in a high-quality encode of these episodes. Bit rate (a strong determinant of quality on standard DVD) varies from around 4800kbps to just over 6000 kbps during playback. The encoding is not perfect; an observant eye will see compression artifacts show up often on backgrounds and matte paintings; thankfully, characters and moving scenes show up with about as much clarity as the transfer probably allowed.

Special features: 3 out of 5 stars

The extras are fully contained on disc 3 of this collection, which I like because it leaves valuable space on the other two discs for high-quality episode encoding. However, the features come up a bit short in my opinion. Though the 20-minute documentary is all-new, it is not as thorough as I hoped it would be or as the packaging suggests. Also this documentary lacked any contribution from the original voice actors, whose involvement strikes me as necessary for a five-star special features disc. A printable copy of the “Transport To Oblivion” script (also available on the aging Rhino relase), three Hasbro toy commercials and one PSA (Public Service Announcement) make up the reminder of this light special features section. Hopefully Shout! Factory will continue to release the original series on DVD, in which case there are ample opportunities for further special features.

All in all, this is a great product at a great price, and bears the closest resemblance to the original broadcast episodes I have seen thus far. Looking forward to future relases, possibly someday on Blu-Ray.

The animation may not have been the best on this series but in the eighties it’s all we needed and our active imaginations filled in the rest. Despite the older less impressive animation these episodes are still classics to those who remember them and will be more enjoyable for most of us than the many spinoffs that followed the G1 series. There was something innocent about the series here, maybe because it was so early before the fact that each episode was really just a half hour commercial became common knowledge, maybe because here they actually looked like robots in disguise, but maybe just because they are the ones most of us grew up on and where the whole lasting franchise found it’s niche.

Fans should be very excited to own these episodes in a new more affordable set. The set is being put out by Shout! Factory and they have always done an excellent job of providing fans with a lot of well done special features on long awaited sets. This set was originally announced as having a few special features included with more possibly in the works but I’m very glad to see the amount that they have now announced for it and have updated this review to include them. Alot of people who didn’t buy the more expensive original sets are going to be excited at the chance to get this one and I know that I can’t wait. I originally gave this set 5 stars just for the opportunity to own these classic episodes in a proper DVD set, but after hearing that they will in fact be restored to original broadcast versions with a new stereo soundtrack created from the original audio I’m more excited than ever.

Some may say that this series was just the next step in a great advertising campaign for children’s toys but those of us who grew up being entertained by it know that there truly is more to this series than meets the eye. Thanks For Your Time.

*It now appears that Shout! will also be releasing Transformer’s G1 in a complete series set this summer. While I think this first season set is still great for some I personally am more excited for the complete series.

The Book of John is treated like the finely wrought piece of literature it is. The material is adapted with fidelity as a self-contained work. Seeing it as a complete story is much different than taking elements of the life of Jesus out of context.

A lot can be said about the adaptation, directing, acting, production design and music — but what stands out is that the sum of these parts is much greater than the separate elements, as fine as they are. Dare I say this is a work of inspiration?

The role of Jesus in world history deserves consideration in the light of the extreme religious fanatacism rampant today from the so-called People of the Book. Who was this person who claimed to be Son of God and Son of man? Factually, the apostle John details only a few points in the life of the Man who conquered death. But John says “Believe in the resurrection and you have eternal life now.” How radical is that?

“The Gospel of John” does not shy away from a blunt account of the role of the Roman and Jewish powers in the murder of Jesus; however, the movie makes it abundantly clear why the Pharisees saw Jesus as a threat. In today’s world He’s still a threat to those who seek power alone,

For me, what jumped out of the film and still echoes in my mind is the several times Jesus asks, “Why do you hate me?” That question reverberates in today’s headlines.

In a politically correct world, we no longer have public conversations about the subjective truth of the life of Jesus. Or the meaning of that solitary life. With advances in quantum physics, we consider the fundamental nature of of matter, time and consciousness. The Gospel of John touches on all these things with sublime power and insight.

Like in any other movie, this one richly rewards the suspension of disbelief. Surrender to a remarkable film that will haunt you long after final fade out. Finally I understand why those early followers of Jesus said: “We are not as those who have no hope.”

The original DVD release (quickly out of print) has three discs with detailed extras that cover all the major production elements.

A later release has a two hour version of the film, very nicely edited, as well as the original three hour theatrical version.

Both versions of the film are beautifully transferred in a widescreen format that fills newer 16:9 screens.

I review DVDs for a local paper. I watch a lot of movies and “The Gospel of John” is among the best films I’ve seen in the last year. It’s actually about something profound and acutely relevant. And it is rendered with style and grace.

If you’ve seen Jesus’ crucifixion in Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ,” see the rest of the story in “The Gospel of John.”

The Gospel of John is, in my humble opinion, the best Biblical-based movie since The Gospel According to St Matthew. The Gospel of John was filmed in Toronto using unknown actors and a British director. The intent of the Producers was to present the text of the book with no embelishments or viewpoints, letting the words speak for themselves and leaving the viewer to draw their own conslusions. The film accomplished this beautifully. The result is a powerful presentation that, while three hours long, seemed to fly by. I never got bored or tired, and felt like I had been there 2 hours or less.
Sadly, it gets mediocre reviews from the “sophisticated” reviewers who cannot appreciate the simple beauty and power of the words as written by John without the aid of post-modern interpretation.
I understand it is only showing in limited theaters in the South, then going straight to video. If it is in a theatre in your city, go see it. If not, get the video when it comes out. It is well worth the price.

This movie has no script, the acting is flat, uninspired, one-dimensional, cliche-happy, the cinematography is terrible, although I don’t think it will matter to many. If you like Paul Rodriguez you could probably stomach this flick but I can’t see anyone paying full price for this.
