David (Hard Candy) Slade directs this nerve-jangling adaptation of the popular graphic novel series about a mob of vampires that overruns a remote Alaskan town in the grip of 30 Days of Night. Josh Hartnett and Melissa George are the film’s de facto heroes (he’s the stoic town sheriff and she’s his estranged fire-marshal wife) but the picture’s real MVP is Slade’s camera (along with cinematographer Jo Willems), which careens across the town’s snowy landscape to detail the vampires’ horrific assault on its inhabitants, which are quickly pared down to a hardy few. The script, co-written by the source material’s creator, Steve Niles, along with Pirates of the Caribbean’s Stuart Beattie and Hard Candy’s Brian Nelson), proudly wears its influnces on its crimson-stained sleeve (Bram Stoker’s Dracula, natch, but also Salem’s Lot, Night of the Living Dead, and John Carpenter’s version of The Thing) and boils down the graphic novels to a series of tense and extremely bloody standoffs between Harnett and George’s band of survivors and the vaguly Slavic and ferocious bloodsuckers led by Marlow (a feral and frightening Danny Huston). And if the characters seem stock and the finale begs suspension of disbelief, the set pieces leading up to it are sufficiently supercharged with suspense and violence to please most horror fans. Standouts in the supporting cast are Ben Foster as the film’s Renfield figure and Mark Boone Junior; the disturbing score by Brian Reitzell also merits a mention. –Paul Gaita

Naomi takes on the duplicates of her that the evil Demetrius Mardini has created, in a series of gunfights, fistfights, knife fights, and explosions. Despite the film’s promising origins, clumsy storytelling and director Katsuhito Akiyama’s tendency to stage many of the battles in dim dramatic lighting hurt its impact, as it’s difficult to follow what’s happening. For much of the late 20th century, Leontyne Price was the leading exponent of Verdi’s heroic soprano roles–among the most demanding vocal and dramatic categories in opera. One of her specialties was Leonora, the tormented heroine in La forza del destino (The Power of Fate). Her classic performance, combined with some of Verdi’s most soaring and energetic music, did much to justify this flawed but compelling masterpiece–a thud-and-blunder melodrama about war, duls, violent death, guilt, vengeance, and concealed identities in which, following a tried and tru operatic formula, nearly everybody dies at the end. There are also comic scenes.

A Metropolitan Opera production of La forza del destino starring Leontyne Price should be a basic item in any collection seriously dedicated to Verdi. This would be an even better production if it had been recorded earlier, when her voice was richer and more precisely controlled, but it is clearly a case of better late than never. The supporting cast is capable and sometimes exciting, but frankly no match for the all-star ensemble supporting Renata Tebaldi and Franco Corelli in a 1958 performance at the San Carlo Opera in Naples available only on VHS. That production is filmed in black and white; no subtitles are provided and the video’s technical quality is primitive. But it captures the opera’s emotional energy and epic scope. –Joe McLellan

Six hours of monosyllabic John Rambo high jinks, best savored in surround sound (for the bone-rattling explosions) and with your brain on pause (for everything else). Sylvester Stallone’s second signature character, after Rocky, a seething ex-Green Beret killing machine, went from Vietnam-vet victim in the original picture, First Blood, flipping out over the ingratitude of his beloved homeland, to a muscle-bound terminator in Rambo III, mowing down commies in the deserts of Afghanistan. You should consider bypassing the boxed set in favor of just the middle chapter, Rambo: First Blood Part 2, written by James Cameron and directed by George Pan Cosmotos. It’s the most balanced and satisfying of the three films: Rambo is dropped back into Nam to rescu some POWs, and the action builds steadily in scale and ferocity. Each fireball seems to be bigger than the last. Of all the recent headbanger action movies, only the first Die Hard offers more bang for the buck. The underrated character actor Richard Crenna (a standout sleazebag in Body Heat), as Rambo’s military mentor and staunch defender, is the series’ secret weapon, providing some welcome human ballast. –David Chute

His antics outside of the ring showed an often-hilarious flair for self-promotion, and his conversion to Islam and decision to avoid the Vietnam War only fuled the storm of controversy that surrounded him. The thing about Ali, though, was that he was good enough to get by with it; after all, it’s hard to argu with success. In the ring, he showed a sheer prowess and techniqu that few before or since could approach (the bonus CD-ROM discusses the similarities and contrasts between Ali and the great Joe Louis). Outside the ring, Ali had a sharp mind, good looks, and the strength of his own convictions going for him. This DVD contains footage of Ali’s 1964 fight in which he slaughtered Sonny Liston, the 1974 bout where his techniqu got the better of George Foreman and his fearsome punching power, and the brutal 1975 fight against Joe Frazier (all fights are shown in their entirety). There have been few heavyweight boxers who can compare favorably to Muhammad Ali, and this DVD should be in the collection of all those who consider themselves fans of the sport. –Jerry Renshaw
