Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties, is the live-action (plus 2 animated cats) sequel to the 2004 movie basic on the 80’s comic strip cat. Like the original this one has Bill Murray (A Life Aquatic, Ghostbusters, etc.) replacing (with distinction) the late Lorenzo Music, who provided the cats voice on the animated TV series and specials. Also back are the cutie but clueless would be couple Garfield’s owner Jon Arbuckle, played perfectly bland by Breckin Meyer and Liz the Vet, played by Jennifer Love Hewitt. In spite of the Dickens subtitle spoof, this one is loosely Mark Twain’s Prince & the Pauper. Jon follows Liz to London, England where he plans to propose to her. The fat cat stows-away uninvited and in the perfunctory identity swap Garfield finds himself mistaken for his UK double Prince (voiced by the great Tim Curry) and lording over posh castle of four-legged subjects in his stead. The evil Lord Dargis, played by Scottish actor/comedian Bill Connolly, is next in line to inherit the estate, have evil designs to get his evil hands on the royal fortune.

This one is worth seeing if only for more Murray as Garfield. Although it is surprising that the sequel was a theatrical release when the original opened for made most of its revenue from DVD sales. The studio is counting on the summer family pickings being slim until Superman Returns, but Garfield: ATOTK is still rated PG for some tame bathroom jokes. The studio also feels that when John Cleese is unavailable Tim Curry (Rocky Horror & the voice of Lemony Snicket’s audio books) is the go-to-weird English guy, for the other pampered cat-currently-called Prince. I have no problem with that Curry is a delicious pansy-cat and Billy Connolly (Lemony Snicket’s movie, Head of the Class) is always fun. I also have no problem with the use of recycling of (classic) plots, knowing where the stories going from the get-go makes any departure or twist that much more fun.

This one, like the original is goofy, but entertaining.

While on vacation, my husband and I decided to take our 5 children to a movie - and the newest Garfield movie was their pick. Each of our children, ages 2 - 8, enjoyed the movie thoroughly! Of course, any movie that includes talking animals is a big hit in our family - and there were plenty of them!

The scenes toward the end of the film when the two kitties are working in cahoots are the best. And you’ve gotta love the happy and romantic ending - just the thing to lift your spirits!

Our whole family gives this film a big “thumbs up”, and we can’t wait for the DVD release!

This is the last entry in a five volume set collecting all 52 episodes of the 1960s Speed Racer. This series has a very self-contained air, with a beginning, a middle and an end. It begins with Speed’s first professional race and ends when he becomes world champion. With all the episodes now available to fans on DVD, we can evaluate the series as a whole. And I am forced to the conclusion that while the beginning and the end rock, the middle fairly sucks.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Speed Racer, Vol. 5! Click Here

As the series progressed I suspect the creators began to run out of money because episode quality dropped immensely. Most of the truly excellent eps, “The Great Plan”, “Challenge of the Masked Racer”, “The Race Against the Mammoth Car”, “The Most Dangerous Race”, “The Fire Race” and “The Fastest Car on Earth” are two-parters (or in the case of “The Most Dangerous Race” the show’s only three-parter) clustered in the series’ early days; they’re all on Volumes 1 and 2 of the set. Toward the middle/end (the stuff on Volumes 3 and 4) we get a bunch of single ep stories with artwork, scripting, and even the amount of animation all noticably inferior to earlier efforts.

Which brings us to Volume 5 (the last eight eps). Episode quality on this DVD varies wildly, containing both Speed’s absolute worst adventure and one of his very best. Other eps range from mediocre to good, with, thankfully, rather more of the latter.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Speed Racer, Vol. 5! Click Here

I’ve always had a weak spot for “The Great Car Wrestling Match” (Episode #45). True, its animation is limited, but the artwork is good, and the storyline amazingly strong. If I may be allowed to seemingly digress for a moment: one reason so many fans love “The Race Against the Mammoth Car” I feel is that it’s one of the few times in the series Speed uses the Mach 5 offensively against another vehicle. When Speed breaks out the saw blades and starts slicing tires off the Mammoth Car that just flat DOES it for people. For “The Great Car Wrestling Match” they came up with the absolutely deranged idea of having Speed enter the Mach 5 in a demolition derby. This episode gives us what we love most about “Mammoth Car” - the Mach 5 in car-on-car battle - only instead of a few brief moments within a larger storyline, it’s the focus of the entire ep. Thus Speed uses every trick he can pull out of that fantastic car to trash about fifty-seven million other vehicles AND one of his opponents has a highly tricked-out car of his own with a built-in arsenal of weaponry specifically designed to kill the Mach 5.

Ah, good stuff.

I despise “Motorcycle Apaches” (#46). To my mind it’s the single worst ep. Speed and the gang look really, really stupid wearing cowboy hats. The characterization of the Apaches is more than a little racist. “Ugh!” indeed. Don’t all “Indians” talk that way? Then we have Speed’s comments, courtesy of Japanese writers, on what a horrible, selfish thing it is that the Apaches have a problem with their land being used, without their permission, for a facility to build better and more powerful nuclear bombs. This struck me, even as a kid, as self-righteous tripe propounded by outsiders who didn’t know what the hell they were talking about.

“Car With a Brain” and “Junk Car Grand Prix” (#s 47 & 48) are forgettable examples of the aforementioned inferior writing, artwork and animation.

“The Car in the Sky” (#49) is decent. “The Trick Race” (#50) features the return of the Car Acrobatic Team from “The Most Dangerous Race” and co-stars Racer X, always a good thing. “The Trick Race” relies heavily on footage from earlier episodes, chiefly “The Most Dangerous Race”. Even some of the events happening within the storyline use footage cribbed from other eps. Whenever new footage is intercut with old, the wide disparity in quality of animation (often none at all as characters talk without moving their mouths) and artwork is evident. “The Trick Race” is a pristine example of talented creators turning necessity into virtue; because they had very little money to produce the ep, about half of it is stitched together from previously existent footage. Amazingly, with an ingenious script, “The Trick Race” works, and works well. What happens between Racer X and Speed at the end of the ep has to be seen to be believed. It’s genuinely moving and was picked by TV Guide as one of the most memorable moments in television history.

Then there’s the series finale, the two-part “Race Around the World” (#s 51 & 52). Obviously the creators wanted to end the series on an up note. None of that weinie single episode stuff, Speed Racer needed to end with a two-parter, and it needed to be great! It was, due to an amazingly inventive script combined with some of the series’ best artwork and animation. Speed competes in the Around-the-World Grand Prix requiring him to pilot a Formula 1 car, rocket powered raceboat, airboat, biplane, raft, submarine, snow tractor, ice yacht, truck, motorcycle, kayak - and of course he finishes in the Mach 5 - all while nature and two other racing teams pull every dirty trick they can think of to knock him out of the running. In the final ep, Racer X shows up one last time. Really, they should have called this adventure “Everything But the Kitchen Sink”. For my money “The Most Dangerous Race” will always be the best Speed Racer, but “Race Around the World” is in a strong 2nd place, a fine and worthy send-off for our hero.

Looking over the entirety of this five-volume collection, here’s my advice to Speed Racer fans. If you want to enjoy the series’ worthwhile eps, you should buy Volumes 1 and 2. Volumes 3 and 4 are for completists only. However you NEED Volume 5 for “Race Around the World”. Speed Racer may have gotten a bit soft around the middle, but it ended rock hard.

Of all five DVD sets, this is the best set to own. No, I didn’t see any special features, but it’s well worth the price for the last three episodes in the series.

In “The Trick Race” Speed once again races the Car Acrobatic Team. But that’s not what made this cartoon episode one of TV Guide’s most memorable 50 programs. If you don’t know why, watch the episode and pay attention to the ending.

“Race Around the World” Parts I and II are the last of the original Speed Racer episodes. From the very beginning of the series Speed wanted to become the greatest racing car driver in the world. Find out if he can accomplish his goal while being an honorable man. Excellent way to wrap the series!

If you are new to the Speed Racer series, you will probably want to pick up the first DVD set too. “The Great Plan” and “Challenge of the Masked Racer” (the first four episodes, two parts each) pretty much set up the rest of the series and explain all the special features of the Mach 5.

This was my favorite cartoon series when I was growing up. I couldn’t wait to get home from school to watch the next thrilling episode of Speed Racer. I hope you enjoy it as well!

“Baseball Boots,” Dora helps her friend Boots play his first baseball game. Boots needs help to catch, throw, save his bat from Swiper. Plus these are two bonus: “Bouncing Ball” and “Choo Choo.”. Bouncing ball introduces them to counting and Choo Choo to colors. Choo Choo was great because my kids enjoy the trains.

A negative for me is The Old Grumpy Troll is included in some of the scenes. The Grumpy Old Troll requires Dora and her traveling partners to solve his riddle before crossing over his bridge. I guess is supposed to be fearsome creature since is a troll but I don’t understand why this character is included. My issue is that my three year old is afraid of him and stop watching and leaves the room as soon as he appears, so we have to skip that part. The grumpy old troll might not have the same effect with every child but just be aware.

A positive is that this DVD has the Spanish track which is a plus for those parents that are looking for DVDs in Spanish. This is excellent, my 3 yr old is learning Spanish quite fast just watching the video in Spanish.

First off, let me say that several people have reviewed this item incorrectly. The item above is NOT the AUDIO DVD of the Rumours album (DVD-A). The Audio DVD is a completely different experience than the item you are looking at. This item is a regular “movie” visual-type DVD that includes interviews with the band and that breaks down the music peice by peice. It’s been on TV before…and, it’s been available on VHS for quite a long time. With that said…

Being a huge FM and Stevie fan, I purchased this on DVD hoping that it might have additional footage or features that were not on the VHS (which, of course I have already). Well sadly, there is nothing additional on the DVD. However, this is still such a GREAT thing to have. It’s absolutely amazing to listen to Stevie, alone at her candlelit piano, singing “Dreams”. It makes me cry because it’s so beautiful. That 30 seconds of video ALONE is worth the purchase price. It’s incredible to hear the music “taken apart” at the soundboard, instrument by instrument, sound by sound, voice by voice. It really helps you understand and appreciate the painstaking process this was for all of them. If you’ve never seen it, you really should buy it - on either format - DVD or VHS - it really makes no difference.

The Good

Ahh, turmoil makes for good albums, but who didn’t know that’s what Rumours was all about. It’s still quite interesting to hear Fleetwood Mac tell the stories themselves of how the songs that made up their landmark album came together. Why “Rhiannon” is included here is beyond me, it wasn’t even on that album. The song was released when Buckingham and Nicks joint the group one album prior, so there’s some significance. It was Christine that came up with the chunky riff that dominates “You Make Loving Fun”, but together with Lindsey they made a masterpiece. Between a classic live performance of the song, John and Christine discuss their troubled relationship during the recording. Stevie Nicks reveals that she wrote “Dreams” in Sly Stones bed, and how Lindsey always had a way to make her songs sound great, when he was happy with her. The Scottish/Irish folk influenced “Second Hand News” was a Buckingham contribution. He reveals that he was listening to the Bee Gee’s “Jive Talking” at the time he wrote it. Mick Fleetwood offers an interesting little tidbit here; he wasn’t the odd man out when it came to dysfunctional relationship. Not only were Lindsey and Stevie & John and Christine on the skid, he was dealing with his best friend sleeping with his wife. They’re still friends today though.

Mick breaks down the little pieces that make up “Go Your Own Way” in the studio to show how it all comes together. Lindsey demonstrates on an acoustic guitar how important the background riff to the song was. Some great stories come out of the discussion of “Never Going Back Again”. Stevie and Christine always had each other to turn to, John emphasizes how drug use was common place back then, but realizes how bad they were, and the producers tell a hilarious story of mishandled drugs. You’ve gotta love Lindsey’s afro in the video for “Don’t Stop”. The band goes into how the song is connected to President Clinton. The producer states that he felt “Songbird” sounded like a concert hall type song, so they booked a concert hall to record it. They set up a piano with flowers and champagne for Christine to play away. They include performance footage in which I can’t tell if it’s Christine back then or Christine today. She really hasn’t aged a bit. The DVD covers the song “Silver Springs” which didn’t actually appear on the album. The producers said they had to cut it due to time space. There’s a live performance of “The Chain” from the eighties, circa Lindsey’s funny hat days. The group reveals that the song was changed at the last minute to make it work.

The Bad

The group does their interviews separate from each other.

The Verdict

The stories are just as compelling as the album.

This new Battlestar Galactica 2.5 DVD boxset release is full of special features and bonus material to attract all viewers. The split season format is great. It airs as half seasons on Sci-Fi and they release it to match its airing schedule and system. There are so many special features, you could spend more time watching them then the actual episodes.

One of the greatest bonuses to the set is the much anticipated and greatly debated extended version of the episode `Pegasus’ this special version is over an hour and a half long it was not aired in this format due to time constraints. It views like a feature movie. It has amazing special effects and amazing cinematography.

Other features include deleted scenes, which are broken down by episodes, include the producer’s podcasts that aired on the Sci-Fi channel’s website during the original airings, and the producer’s video Logs and much much more. The deletes scenes are broken down episode by episode.

The bonus material, if not ignored, will help viewers better understand the choices made in preparing the episodes and the season for release.

This half of season 2 has many unique twits and turns in the plots and lives of the characters. We are also introduced to new human cylon models. As to the content itself, in this half of season 2 the central character is Sharon, with her actions developed alongside those of (spoiler alert!) those of a few different Cylon version of her. Byond Sharon’s development on Batlestar Galactica and Battlestar Pegasus, which is presented as strongly intertwined with the fate of the whole human race, a great deal of the season deals with relationships - Professional and otherwise - and especially friendships. Striking interactions occur between President Roslyn and Commander Adama; in the complicated relationship between Starbuck and Apollo; with Sharon and, well just about everybody.

In the broader scheme of things, by this point in the series the complexities of guiding a free population while trying to avoid the Cylon army has taken it’s toll on both military and civilian leaders of this rag-tag group of humans trying to find a new home on a lost planet called Earth.

The excellent character development in this half of the season can be attributed to very strong scriptwriting. The cliffhanger ending leaves you mouth watering and you desperately awaiting season 3 - which hopefully, after snagging this DVD set, you can finally get caught up in watching. The Sci-Fi channel has to date released 4 of 10 web episodes that have story line development between season’s 2 and 3. Season 3 begins airing in the US and Canada on October 7th for the first time the episodes will air in both countries at the same time. We here in Canada will not have to wait days, weeks or months for the US show to finally come to Canada.

BSG is often called the best Sci-fi on television and Newsweek has gone so far as to call it the best drama on TV. With such high praise and the series consistently receiving great reviews - not to mention the special features and additions offered in the 2.5 DVD - how could this DVD box set not be worth every penny?

So Say we all.

(First Pulished in Imprint 2006-10-20 as ‘Galactica’s secon half sizzles: Recently released DVD set offers rewarding bonus features’.)

I love this show! In addition to being a great sci-fi series, it works perfectly well as a gritty drama. In the wake of the attempted genocide of the human race, a fleet of 50,000 survivors have left their homes in an attempt to escape their oppressors, the half human/half machine Cylons, in an attempt to find refuge on a little planet called Earth.

Led by President Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell), who is dying of cancer, and Commander William Adama (Edward James Olmos), the fleet was last seen about to do battle with… fellow humans? Yes, after the discovery that the Battlestar Pegasus has also been on the run in the 7 or so months since the Cylons attacked the 12 Colonies of Kobol, a disagreement about leadership has Adama and Roslin looking down the figurative barrel at Admiral Cain (Michelle Forbes), the commanding officer aboard the Pegasus and Adama’s superior. The two-parter “Resurrection Ship” shows that the immaculate pair of Adama and Roslin can sink very low if they need to in order to protect the fleet. The two episodes also contain a huge revelation regarding the Cylons that may allow the humans to actually begin to have a chance at combatting their enemies.

As the second half of the second season progresses, the characters that we’ve grown to love (or in some cases, love to hate), are put through more trials as they deal not only with the Cylon threat, but also each other. Vice President Gaius Baltar (James Callis) has his loyalties divided due to the discovery of a captured Model No. 6 (Tricia Helfer) aboard the Pegasus. Of course, the twist is that they are divided three ways; to his fellow humans, to the corporeal 6 (known, possibly as a joke to a group of people who dislike the show, who call the show GINO, or Galactica In Name Only) as Gina, and finally to the mental 6 that he sees in his head. Capt. Lee “Apollo” Adama, the commander’s son, is given more responsibility as his role as pilot and CAG is expanded to do gritty missions, including shutting down a black market ring. Of course, the now Captain Kara “Starbuck” Thrace acts tough as usual (but then, we wouldn’t have it any other way), though her position as best pilot/biggest b**** aboard Galactica is challenged by one of the pilots she trained in season 1. And the love triangle of Sharon “Boomer” Valerii/No. 8 (Grace Park), Chief Tyrol (Aaron Douglas), and Karl “Helo” Agathon (Tahmoh Penniket) is further strained by the arrival of the cylon/human hybrid baby as well as the creation of a kind of “love trapazoid” when Cally (Nikki Clyne) begins to express her feelings for Tyrol. Even another love triangle forms when Lee begins to become the object of affection of Dualla (Kandyse McClure), much to the disappointment of her boyfriend Billy (Paul Campbell).

Unfortunately, these 10 episodes contain some of the weakest of the show’s run. Episodes like “Scar” and “Black Market” are only ok by comparison to some of the show’s episodes, most of which are amazing. Still, the weakest episode of Galactica is still 10 times better than the best episodes of most of what’s on television these days. There are many really good episodes in this set, including “The Captain’s Hand”, and “Sacrifice”. Also, the two-part “Resurrection Ship” is wonderful, as is “Downloaded”, which is told from the point of view of the Cylons on the planet Caprica. However, I must say that “Lay Down Your Burdens, Pts. 1 and 2″ have ousted “Pegasus” as my new favorite episode(s). While the season finale does share a slight similarity with the season 1 ender (the discovery of a planet), it is handled much differently this time around, and there are numerous other things going on. By the year’s end, another Cylon model will be revealed (taking the total to 7 known models and 5 to be discovered), a few characters in the military will be promoted, and, in the second part of the season finale (which is an extended episode), there will be more twists and turns than you can shake a stick at, especially in the last half hour.

The writers continue to impress as the characters are taken in great new and terrifying directions. This show is unpredictable, and it revels in going places many shows fear to tread. Every character is flawed in some way, and the people inhabiting the universe of BSG are some of the most human characters on television. Sadly, we didn’t see much of Ellen Tigh (Kate Vernon), the insane wife of Galactica’s executive officer Col. Saul Tigh (Paul Hogan). On his own, Tigh is a self-destructive alcoholic, but Ellen serves to take all his worse tendencies and amplify them, as well as planting ideas of ambition in his head (think Lady Macbeth crossed with 24’s Sherry Palmer). Ellen is despicable, but she is part of what makes this show great; she forces Tigh to confront his demons in the most twisted ways imaginable.

The stories are also amazing; the show is very much a product of a post-9/11 America, and that is reflected in the grim, survivalist nature of the fleet. The humans once thought that nothing could touch them, but now their entire way of living has been obliterated, and they must scrape by living on crowded ships with meager rations to sustain them. Furthermore, the lines of good and evil aren’t drawn clearly; the Cylons view their actions as just and right. Even though they claim not to condone murder, in this case, the ends justified the means. And of course, no human is completely good or evil. Even Baltar, who can’t seem to pick a side, can’t always be blamed for his actions, as he is certifiably insane. That doesn’t make his horrible decisions and actions right, but he isn’t doing them because he is “evil”. In a clever twist, the writers even reversed the roles of religion on the show; most of the time in film and television, the protagonists are monotheistic (unless they live in a time/place in history where a polytheistic religion is practiced), but here, the “good” humans are the polytheists while the “evil” Cylons worship the “one true God”.

Battlestar Galactica is without a doubt one of the best series on television. While many people tend to look down on science fiction series as trivial and childish, this is anything but. The messages that are found layered within the plots of the story accurately reflect the state of the world today. If you don’t want to take my word for it, look at the numerous mainstream critics who love the show, such as Time Magazine (which listed it has the best new show of 2005) and Entertainment Weekly, which is trying to get the show nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Drama (which, unfortunately, it probably won’t get due to the academy’s phobia of sci-fi; but then again, LOST won, so I guess anything’s possible). If you have yet to check this show out, buying season 1 should be a top priority for you!

This boxed set comes with the first thirteen episodes of the series and the movie. In the episodes, we start out differently from the original story in the manga, but it does tend to run parallel with it. The movie is a whole different story, almost literally. With stunning visuals and beautiful animation, The Adolesence of Utena offers a different approach to the whole story itself. The characters have obviously grown in different ways, but haven’t changed completely. To some, the movie seems “weird”, “stupid” and “unnecessary”, but the very basic of ideas is to follow the symbolism, just as in the series. The movie explains some of the things that may have not been so clear in the series, and adds more to it in its own way (or continues an idea, such as Nanami!Cow). I’ve seen some personal reviews with their own ideas and explanations of the meaning of all the symbolism, and most of them thankfully add just that much more to the story.

On a personal note, I love the music throughout the series, but absolutely adore the movie soundtrack. I thoroughly recommend the manga, episodes, movie, and sountracks.

To add any and/or all of these to your current collection(s) is a very good idea, to those who aren’t opposed to a few new (and open-minded) ideas…

I think that the beginning of the series, included here, is the most widely liked portion of this anime. Later on the series becomes darker and (it is possible) stranger, and less appropriate for younger audiences.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Revolutionary Girl Utena - The Rose Collection/The Movie Boxed Set! Click Here

I also loved the movie, but understand that those people who haven’t seen the series seldom understand or like the movie. The reason is that here the movie is essentially the entire series metaphorically presented in less than two hours. If you don’t know what’s going on, you’re not going to get it from the movie. That said I thought it was a fantastic (graphically and otherwise) way to present the story. It doesn’t add to the storyline, nor does it try to do a full arc of the series in coherent movie format, it just presents it differently. (I also loved the car-thing, what a great way for her to rescue Anthy!)

This is the third DVD release of Kubrick’s masterpiece, and it is still not given an anamorphic transfer. How can this happen in 2007, considering Warner’s reputation as a studio that cares and the classic status of the film? Incredible. And not a trace of any new extras or bonuses except the trailer we’ve seen before. A huge boo to Warner! Words fail.

As much as I appreciate a new release of this classic film, I am at a loss to understand why they would give it a widescreen treatment and not enhance it for widescreen televisions. All of the two-disc special editions in the new Kubrick boxed set are enhanced, and yet this one (not part of the set, but released at the same time) is not. If you’re a Lolita fan you should stick with the original 1:33 version. This one will only frustrate you.

A few months ago I rented the Criterion edition of Gimme Shelter. The DVD included a fascinating preview for another film by the Maysles brothers called SALESMAN. I had never heard of the film but after seeing the preview I had to see it. Much to my dismay SALESMAN was not available, nor does it appear to have ever had an official release on video. Thankfully, Criterion has seen fit to release this long lost American masterpiece. I was completely won over by this tragic but hysterical documentary about door-to-door Bible salesmen. The Maysles brothers focus most of the film on Paul Brennan aka The Badger. Brennan appears to be the the main inspiration for Gil, the unlucky salesman on The Simpsons. Brennan rarely scores a sale and when he doesn’t his fellow (and more successful) salesmen have to endure his bizarre Irish rants and mumbled complaints. SALESMAN is full of strange lingo, strong Irish accents, and tons of smoking. I don’t smoke but by the end of the film I felt in need of a light. Most of the banter between the Bible sellers and their prospective buyers is very funny. One woman declared that she was the “literal” person of the household. Criterion’s presentation is excellent. The disc includes an interview with the two brothers by Jack Kroll. Kroll’s interviewing skills are terrible at best. More than once he cuts off the two filmmakers to plunge the shallow depths of his scary thoughts. Even worse he goes on to tell them what they mean to say. The commentary track by Albert Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin is interesting and informative. Highly Recommended.

The Maysles Bros. did a wonderful job with this film. The b/w photography is sharp and smartly orchestrated making _Salesman_ a must see in my book. Shot with a custom made handheld camera and portable boom mic, _Salesman_ is the story of four door-to-door bible salesmen in the late sixties. The film falls in to the documentary category, though the Maysles have coined their own term for their style of filming: direct cinema.

The “salesmen” themselves are unforgetable; their performances in the homes of anyone who will let them get a foot in the door are fascinating and nerve wracking as you find yourself sympathizing both with the salesmen and the prospective buyers at the same time. It’s this dynamic tension that gives the film some real drama. Better than what could have been scripted.

I never saw this film on video so I can’t comment on any improvements in quality. But I will say this: the film looks and sounds beautiful on DVD. Also, with the DVD is an interview (mostly pretentious banter revolving around the distinction of “direct cinema”), commentary with the Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin (editor) and film trailers.

Mickey Lemle’s documentary Ram Dass, Fierce Grace, describes the life of Ram Dass (Richard Alpert), author, 60s guru, spiritual teacher, cohort of Timothy Leary, and author of Be Here Now, one of the most influential books of the 1970s. The film begins in the present as Ram Dass deals with the effects of a massive stroke he suffered in February 1997 that left him physically incapacitated and with impaired memory and speech.

Interweaving current conversations, interviews with people in his life, and archival footage, Lemle then looks back at his childhood, the controversy surrounding his research with Timothy Leary in psychedelics at Harvard, his studies in India with Neem Karoli Baba who renamed him Baba Ram Dass (Servant of God), his work with the Seva Foundation in social action projects dedicated to relieving suffering in the world, and his impact as an author and guru to millions of followers. Several examples are shown of his compassion and his ability to feel the pain of others. In an opening sequence, his beautiful “Rachel’s Letter”*comforts a family after their daughter was murdered. In the final sequence, Ram Dass listens to a young woman struggling to overcome her grief at her boyfriend’s violent death. In a powerfully moving segment, she brings Ram Dass to tears when she tells him about a dream she had in which her boyfriend speaks to her from beyond with a reassuring message.

When Ram Dass received the “fierce grace” of being “stroked”, he admits he did not have any unusual spiritual epiphany. He recalls, “Here I am, Mr. Spiritual, and in my own head I didn’t orient toward the spirit. It showed me I have some work to do”. He has written about the stroke in his latest book, “Still Here” in which he talks about slowing down, and finding out about the “everything” that is out there. For Ram Dass, aging has become a gift. “I was galumphing through life before the stroke”, he says. “I’m at peace now more than I’ve ever been. The peace comes from settling in to the moment”. Enhanced by the music of Krishna Das, the documentary is more than just a bio-pic or a meditation on the process of aging, it is an inspiring portrait of a man whose life can be summed up in one word — service. Ram Dass has said, “What one person has to offer to another is their own being, nothing more, nothing less”. In Ram Dass, Fierce Grace, Mr. Lemle has given us Ram Dass’ being, nothing more, nothing less. That is a gift of love.

This is a documentary about the legendary Harvard professor, Richard Albert, who experimented with LSD in the 60s, then went to India, changed his name to Ram Das, and came back to become a guru for the hippie generation. Now he’s about 70, and, due to a stroke he suffered in 1997, is wheelchair bound. “I never expected old age to be like this,” he says with difficulty, as his speech is slow now as he struggles to find the right words. The camera takes us right with him on his daily routine. Aides help him dress and drive him to his many therapy appointments and we are witness to his acupuncture as well as speech and physical therapy sessions.

There’s background of course, home movies of him as a child in the 1930s, one of three lively siblings whose father was the president of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. There’s some footage of him with a fresh face and short cropped hair as a professor at Harvard as he and Timothy Leary saw the mind altering drugs of the time as a major breakthrough in human psychology. And then we see him with his guru in India, taking on the spiritually that was even more powerful than the drugs. He then returned home, bearded and dressed in what his father described as a “bedsheet”, and held outdoor yogi sessions for his hundreds of his followers right on the golf course of his family’s New Hampshire estate. His book, “Be Here Now” became a best seller and is still in print.

But now he’s an old man, struggling with his physical challenges. Much of the film focuses on him this way, and sometimes it’s hard to watch as he’s learning to live with his limitations. I was impatient with some of these scenes, in which he struggles to speak; I would have much preferred the film tto be about his history, rather than his present. However, I realize that the film is exactly what he intended it to be and it gives a powerful message. He’s now a guru to the aging baby boomers and he’s a living example of how to deal with old age with dignity. Aging is a natural part of life and we all have to learn to live with it. Ram Das is a fine example. He’s recently written a book, takes on speaking engagements, and finds time to give individuals spiritual counseling.

I give this film a high recommendation. There’s a lot to learn from it. It might not be comfortable to watch, but it
certainly is worthwhile.

Up until three months ago, I was ignorant of producer Harry Novak, his soft-X filmographry or Something Weird Video, the Seattle company that’s preserved these nuggets of drive-in history. Now that I’ve learned about them, I thank God for all three. Both “The Pigkeeper’s Daughter” and “Sassy Sue” are goofy hillbilly humpathons that offer plenty of laughs, though most are of the unintentional kind. “The Pigkeeper’s Daughter” has qualities more closely associated with porn: Wretched acting, a mere hint of a plot and even less of a script, and lots of extended sex scenes (which are pretty explicit for a softie). Terry Gibson (in the title role) and Patty Smith (a.k.a. Peggy Church) are about the only people anyone would want to see have sex. There’s a surprising amount of male nudity–unfortunately it’s in the form of out-of-shape John Keith and skinny Peter James (who has some nasty looking teeth). And what happened to the “actress” playing Gibson’s mama? Her breasts look chafed and there’s a horrible bruise across her lower back. Was she beaten into taking this role? (This might explain her performance.) By comparison, “Sassy Sue”–the story of a young man, his cow, and the women who try to come between them–is a much more polished effort. The acting is a little better (though it’s still bad), the cast is more effective and there’s actually some genuine laughs. A definite highpoint in this one is John Tull’s tryst with one of the horny babes wanting some backwoods boffing (”It would help if you mooed a little,” he snipes). The sex–although simulated and not quite as explicit as that in “Pigkeeper’s Daughter” (there’s a moment in the final scene that pushes the boundaries of softcore, however)–seems a little more genuine in “Sassy Sue.” Both movies are raunchy fun, though “Pigkeeper’s Daughter” is raunchier and “Sassy Sue” is more fun. Better than both movies are the trailers for other similarly-themed Harry Novak productions, like “Midnight Plowboy,” “Country Cuzzins” and “Tobacco Roody.” Fans of large breasts and trash cinema will definitely want to add this to their collection.

This DVD features two classics of the 1970’s skin flick country bumpkin genre produced by Harry Novak. Just so no one is confused, these are low-budget, poorly-acted soft-core movies but despite that have a charm of their own. If you ever sneaked into a R-rated drive-in movie you probably have memories of these types of films, where the clothes come off quickly and often, and the plots are as thin as the Daisy Dukes the girls wear.

Sassy Sue features Sharon Kelly (who later went on to X-rated fame) plus several other starlets whose careers probably didn’t go much beyond this film, their main qualifications being a willingness for nudity. John Tull plays the brain-damaged yet sensitive Junior, who prefers cattle to women, and actually provides more than a bit of humor. I actually found myself singing the inane theme song “Junior’s in love with Sassy Sue”.

Pigkeeper’s Daughter features a bunch of women with large breasts and not much else, but hey you don’t buy these movies expecting Meryl Streep and Orson Welles. The viewer has the comfortable feeling that he/she can act better than anyone in this movie.

The extra features are excellent and numerous. This DVD is a bargain for those who enjoy this type of thing, not that anyone would admit to it.
