One of Spike Lee’s best films, “Jungle Fever” comments more on race relations in America, than on the subject of adultery. Spike is all over the place with his take on male/female relationships, the devastation wrought on a family and the Black community by crack cocaine, the “color line” in the Italian community and interracial relationships. But he seems to pull it all together to make a powerful film and one of the best of the ’90s.

The acting is terrific with the standout performance being Samuel L. Jackson’s as Gator, Wesley Snipes ill fated brother. He’s charming, comical and evil all at once. And Wesley showed his range as an actor through his performance as Flipper, the “good son,” who has a momentary lapse in character and has an affair with his secretary, Annabella Sciorra. All the performances are great and the actors get you to care about the characters they present. Wesley’s performance came after the strong work he did as Nino Brown in “New Jack City” and I don’t remember an actor “flippin’ the script” on the movie going public like that, going from evil to good, in one year in a long time.

You could look at Flipper and Angie as symbols of Black and White America, trying to come together and the obstacles we face as a nation when we don’t deal with the issue of race honestly. Something we’re still going through. This film also deals with our dishonesty with dealing with the drug problem too, and this is where Spike deserves credit. No one is left unexamined by this tale of life and there are no happy endings either from Gator being murdered by his father, to Flipper and Angie breaking up.

I love how Spike begins and ends the movie. Spike shows in the beginning a couple, obviously in love, in Wesley and Lonnette Mc Kee, (in a strong, small supporting role as Drew) that leads you to believe nothing could tear them apart. When you get to the end, Wesley and Lonnette are trying to make a go at it, but through Lonnette’s tears, you see she’s just going through the motions, hoping to put away the pain through the lovemaking. When she tells him “he better leave now,” you can tell the hurt she’s experienced can’t be “loved away” like he’d like.

Critics of this film usually state Spike should have stuck to telling one story. What must be said is that while Spike explores a range of contemporary issues in this film, he has made a film of power and emotion, that definitely draws an opinion out of you, one way or another. An underrated, overlooked masterpiece.

Jungle Fever showcases alot of brilliant performances by so many actors involved in this film. The most powerful, disturbing piece of acting is performed by Samuel Jackson as a strung out crackhead. The first time I saw him in this movie it gave me goosebumps. His “devil dance” at the end of the film is so disturbingly frightning, it elevates Samuel’s acting to a whole other level. Spike Lee is a genious and he gets the most out of his actors. i absolutely love and admire his filmaking. The movie is an emotional rollercoaster. Don’t be misled, it’s not only about interracial dating, it also examines the psychological affects interracial dating has on the family. This movie probes into the lives of all the other people involved. Creatively directed and rich with color and a timeless soundtrack by Stevie Wonder, Jungle Fever is a Spike Lee classic of epic proportions. And you can’t beat the price! *No, i don’t work for either Spike Lee or Amazon.com, I just think this is a great film!

“Bad Day at Black Rock” is a riveting suspense thriller with several memorable performances from a first rate cast. Spencer Tracy (in one of his best roles) excels as John J. MacReedy who is in Black Rock to take a medal to the father of one of his wartime colleagues now that the war is over. He encounters unexpected resentment and hostility from some of the residents, in particular from Robert Ryan, Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin who make a trio of formidable villains. When threats and intimidation have no effect on Tracy (who doggedly continues to pursue his investigations) the three then resort to violence. Also in the impressive cast are Anne Francis, Walter Brennan, Dean Jagger, John Ericson and Russell Collins. With the help of Brennan and Francis and after surmounting many obstacles Tracy eventually gets the upper hand bringing the film to its exciting climax.

Some favourite lines from the film:

Spencer Tracy (to train conductor): “Oh, I’ll only be here for 24 hours”. Train conductor: “In a place like this that could be a lifetime!”.

Russell Collins (to Spencer Tracy): “Important? It’s the first time the streamliner has stopped here in four years”.

Tracy (to Ernest Borgnine): “You’re not only wrong - you’re wrong at the top of your voice!”.

Dean Jagger (to Tracy): “This ain’t no information bureau”.

John Ericson (to Tracy): “If you’re in such a hurry you should have never got off here”. Tracy: “I’m inclined to agree with you”.

A brilliant and satisfying film expertly directed by John Sturges who later went on to make other classics including “Gunfight at the O.K. Corral”, “The Magnificent Seven” and “The Great Escape”. Sturges was fortunate in having such a remarkably good cast - Borgnine and Marvin in particular were excellent as Robert Ryan’s menacing henchmen and Spencer Tracy was at his peak in one of his most powerful and demanding roles ever. He was in fact nominated as Best Actor for his performance in this film but was beaten by Ernest Borgnine for “Marty”.

“Bad Day at Black Rock” is a tense and captivating film with the action taking place over a tight time period of just 24 hours.

It’s very satisfying to see a relatively small movie that was made efficiently by pros become so widely liked and respected. It’s got just about everything…a gripping story that carries a message, vivid characters but a small cast, a dangerous setting, the plight of a brave loner on the side of justice who beats the odds. And it doesn’t have dumb things…an extraneous love story, outraged citizens who meet in a church, excessive violence, time spent on flashbacks. It was a long wait for this one to come out on DVD, but it was worth it.

Among many elements I admire are the three character actors: Russell Collins as the weak, cowardly telegraph agent, Dean Jagger as the played-out sheriff (his humiliation at the hands of Robert Ryan is unpleasant), and, most of all, Walter Brennan as the doctor who tries to push things but isn’t dumb enough to push too hard. I think this was one of Brennan’s last, really good roles before he turned himself into the toothless old coot or cackling grampa of his later films. In his prime, he was a fine actor. And for vicious bullies I don’t think anyone has topped Lee Marvin and Ernest Bognine in their roles. I’d even eat my catsup without any chili at all to avoid a confrontation with these guys.

I have a lot of respect for Robert Ryan but find it sad that, despite a number of opportunities, he never was able to break into the top rank of stardom. Maybe he didn’t really want that. Maybe he was too willing to play bad guys. Maybe he lacked some element of charisma or just ambition. He was a fine actor and, from reports, a nice guy.

Bob Hope’s 1948 film “The Paleface,” was the highest-grossing movie America’s most-beloved comedian of the era ever made. Pairing Hope with Jane Russell in a run-of-the-mill Paramount comedy was box office magic that still works today. Here Bob Hope’s timing is perfect, and he’s totally mastered the character we associate with him, that cowardly braggart, who thinks of himself as a real Casanova. The film still holds up well, and I’ve found myself laughing out loud at many of the scenes. The DVD has an unbelievably good transfer that gives you a picture that’s so crisp, it feels like you have a camera in your hands. Special features are nice, including the original theatrical trailer. There’s also a clip of an Armed Forces Command Performance, and some footage of Bob Hope performing for the troops. With DVD-ROM, you can also compare the script to the scene as it plays out. In all, an enjoyable way to spend an evening with one of the great comedians of the mid-20th century.

This is one of the best Bob Hope movies, and his comedy timing here is excellent. He plays Painless Potter, a cowardly dentist, and the problems he encounters provides Hope ample opportunity to improvise sight gags and many other memorable jokes. Pay close attention when Bob attempts to extract a tooth… it’s a classic scene! Hope is curiously underrated as a comic, but he was an absolute master at this genre, playing to perfection a sort of bumbling wannabe womanizing coward. Pay particular attention to his timing, which was absolutely unmatched in Hollywood.

The only drawback is Jane Russell, who was only in movies due to her cleavage. Her acting talent is minimal, but the brilliant Hope more than makes up for it. You will find yourself laughing out loud continuously throughout this movie. The color tones are bright, crisp and make it seem like you’re sitting in the movie theatre in 1948. A classic comedy film.

I am a male and I am not a soccer fan. The last time I played soccer was probably at recess in sixth grade. But I am an athlete, a huge sports fan and an American. For a reason unbeknownst to me, I was watching the 1999 World Cup Final live on TV. I can say without a doubt that, with the exceptions of maybe McGwire’s 62nd and Gibson’s 1988 miracle, it was the most exciting sports moment I have ever witnessed.

In June 2006 I watched “Dare to Dream: The Story of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team” on HBO. Since that documentary was not out on DVD, I bought this one. This DVD does not disappoint. It covers the history of the team - from their days of toiling in anonymity through the historic 1999 World Cup run, when an entire country rallied behind them. I found it inspiring to learn how a group of teenagers (Mia Hamm was 15 when she joined the team in 1987) persevered for so long while getting paid so little, all for their love of their game and each other. It was neat to see the rise of women’s soccer from the first crowds of a few hundred to the 1999 World Cup final game crowd of over 90,000. Several people were interviewed for this DVD, including several team members, the coaches, family members, sports writers and even former President Clinton. They all share different perspectives on the team which are neat to hear.

This DVD offers insight not only into the team but also into some of its players individually. It was cool to see the bond and cameraderie that existed between them which I am sure had a lot to do with their success.

For me, this DVD was eye opening because I didn’t know a whole lot about the team other than that I respected and enjoyed watching what they did in 1999. I can admit that I don’t often watch women’s athletics, but I can say that I now have a whole new respect for women’s soccer. I’d recommend this DVD to every soccer fan, any sports fan and any patriotic American.

P.S. I’d also recommend getting the “Dare to Dream: The Story of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team” DVD when it comes out.

The World at Their Feet is an excellent look at the Women’s National Team. It goes all the way back to 1985 when the team was originally formed through the 99 World Cup. The quality and production values are excellent. I am a long time fan of the WNT and have several documentaries and The World at Their Feet offered new insight and a lot of behind the scenes footage and photographs I had not seen elsewhere. I would recommend this for soccer fans, parents with young athletes and anyone interested in a compelling story.

The Flesh and the Fiends is a thoroughly enjoyable horror thriller. With the impeccable Peter Cushing, sporting a disturbingly droopy left eyelid, playing the misguided Dr. Knox, Donald Pleasance giving an awe-inspiring performance as half of the murdering duo of Burke and Hare, and plenty of illegal traffic in dead bodies, this movie can hardly do less than succeed admirably. Dr. Knox is an instructor at a medical school in Edinburgh during the 1820s. The number of bodies available for dissection by his students, limited to the bodies of executed criminals, is much too low to satisfy him, so he turns to alternative means of acquiring specimens for study. He has no problem paying grave robbers for corpses, so long as they are fresh enough to be useful; in fact, he openly admits the improper solicitation of corpses, much to the dismay of the leading surgeons in town. Eventually, two shiftless vagabonds by the name of Burke and Hare come to realize that traffic in corpses offers them an unusual economic opportunity. When a lodger in Burke’s apartment house passes away, he and Hare box her up and trade her in for several guineas. Since the doctor wants the freshest corpses possible, they set out to give him what he wants by murdering individuals and bringing them in almost immediately. Things start to go wrong when the pair murders the sweetheart of one of Dr. Knox’s students, yet Knox remains steadfast in his dealings with the loathsome creatures. Murder will out, of course, and Knox must eventually face the music for his actions. This movie, while very good, is by no means perfect. June Laverick gets second billing in her role as Knox’s niece, yet her character really serves no purpose at all in the story. Knox’s assistant, beset early on with doubts and fears over Knox’s acceptance of suspicious corpses, is never fleshed out and ends up behaving somewhat strangely in my opinion. Most of all, the ending (not the real climax, but the ending itself) is just plain weird and makes little sense to me in the context of the story.

Peter Cushing is always fantastic, but the real star of this movie is Donald Pleasance. Even though I knew the future Dr. Loomis from Halloween was in the movie, I quite frankly did not actually recognize him initially. His portrayal of Hare is simply incredible. His calm, assured manner is rarely breached, even in the midst of potential trouble, and his droll manner of explaining his dastardly activities makes of him one of the best truly evil villains I have ever encountered. He is almost capable of convincing anyone, especially his partner, that killing each victim is actually a kindness, for that person will surely be of more use on a dissecting table than he/she is in life. It’s thrilling to watch this master criminal mind at work.

The Flesh and the Fiends has been unduly neglected over the years and has itself suffered the noxious wounds of the dissection table of the censors. It was quite graphic for its time (1959): one of the first scenes features a pale corpse being dragged out of a grave by its head, then the murders of Hare and Burke are shown more realistically than one might expect from a film of this particular era. Its bitingly realistic presentation of early 18th century life, complete with rowdy barrooms and miserable living quarters, along with its moments of unusually graphic violence, give the film a superb believability factor. In fact, the basic story of Burke and Hare is indeed a true one, which makes the horror qualities of this film even more affective than they already are.

For years, this movie has only been available in edited form, bearing the title of Mania in the U.S.; it has also been pawned off with the titles The Fiendish Ghouls as well as The Psycho Killers. The complete, 97-minute version of the movie is the one you want, so don’t accept a copy of Mania and deny yourself six minutes of delightfully horrific entertainment. Despite the weird ending, this movie ranks among the best horror films of the 1950s and 1960s and stands as much, much more than a mere precursor for the later Hammer films starring the inimitable Peter Cushing.

Although my true field of interest remains the silent film (see my other reviews), I just cannot pass up the opportunity to say something about this movie which has been one of my favorites for many years. I first saw it on television back in the 1960’s and it has been with me ever since. Despite the lurid title and packaging THE FLESH AND THE FIENDS is not really a horror film. It is a historical drama with horrific overtones. The movie is based on the lives of Burke and Hare, graverobbers in 1828 Edinburgh, who began to murder people in order to supply the local medical school with fresh corpses to dissect.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Flesh and The Fiends! Click Here

Robert Louis Stevenson based his story THE BODY SNATCHER (which was made into a film in 1943 by Val Lewton starring Boris Karloff) on their exploits. Filmmakers Robert Baker and Monty Berman mounted this project in 1959 hoping to cash in on the burgeoning horror boom created by Hammer Films. They hired Peter Cushing plus a host of character actors to bring the story to life. Special mention should be made of the vivid performances given by George Rose as Burke and Donald Pleasance as Hare. It is really their movie. The film also features Billie Whitelaw in a colorful early role. Like PSYCHO which it predates, THE FLESH AND THE FIENDS. is also a psychological thriller (it was called MANIA in the U.S.). It even eliminates its young protagonists halfway through the film. I wonder if Hitchcock was familiar with it?

John Gilling, the director and co-writer, would move on to Hammer after the success of this film where he would make THE REPTILE and THE PLAGUE OF THE ZOMBIES. FLESH is well acted, tightly directed, and in the Continental version (also available on this DVD) extremely daring in its use of nudity. An influential film that was ahead of its time, it has only been available in substandard public domain copies up until now. Thanks to Image Entertainment for making it available at last in a beautiful print made from the camera negative. As the film approaches its 50th anniversary, the power of its brutal imagery has not diminished.

Whether it be Karate, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do or Jiu-Jitsu; ALL forms of Martial Arts is a way of Self Expression. The fantastic Japanese Martial Arts melodrama, “BLACK BELT” (aka. Kuro Obi, 2007) explores the character of Karate itself and is loosely based on a true story. The film effectively balances the YIN and the YANG using the tumultuous military period in a 1930s Japan as its backdrop. It delves into the face of violent confrontation and the reflection on moral responsibility.

At an isolated dojo headed by Sensei Eiken Shibahara (Shinya Ohwada), three students: Giryu (Akihito Yagi), Taikan (Tatsuya Naka) and Choie (Yuji Suzuki) train relentlessly under their master’s instructions. One day, when the Kenpeitai (Japanese military) threaten to ousts them from their own school, the encounter leaves Choie badly wounded with Taikan and Giryu taking up the challenge. Giryu defeats the commanding officer without throwing a single punch that led the officer to commit Seppuku.

After their master’s death, the trio was hired to train military soldiers since the two both displayed impressive prowess. But fate interferes when Giryu becomes wounded by the officer’s vengeful children and he becomes separated from the group. Taikan becomes influenced by the ways of the world while Giryu befriends a kindly family. Fate has played them in opposing hands and an inevitable showdown is poised to bring the traditional Giryu against the corrupted Taikan–just who is truly deserving of the KURO OBI?

“Black Belt” is a thinking man’s martial arts film. The screenplay by George Ilda is a lush impressive breeding ground for melodrama and with Shinichi Nagasaki’s (A Tender Place) direction taking a more somber, novelistic approach to its story; the film explores the tensions of Karate. The film is an expression of the spirit of Karate, and Director Nagasaki has opted for a more character-driven approach in place of dazzling and unrealistic martial arts displays, for which he is to be commended. I am in total awe when a director instead goes for the spirit of a concept rather than just show how cool fight sequences can look.

The cast, Tatsuya Naka and Akihito Yagi are Black Belt holders themselves and they look very natural. Now, don’t mistake my earlier comment that the film is lacking in the number of fight sequences; there are quite a great number of fight scenes that display the beauty of Karate. Although the film focuses more on its characters and while the film’s plot is a bit simple, the action and fights are nicely placed to keep us entertained. The fight sequences themselves are a form of character development. As I’ve said, martial arts is a form of self-expression and so the film capitalizes on this idea. The action is there to build the characters` credibility, and it feels necessary to get to the film’s resolution. Unlike most martial arts films that have the story revolving on the action scenes, in this film, the action revolves in its plot.

The fight sequences by Fuyuhiko Nishi are smooth and VERY realistic. Most martial arts fans always see the choreography of the fights as a film’s major selling point, and this film delivers; the fights are AWESOME to see and more impressive as it avoided the use of wires and extravagant stunt work. I have never witnessed such well-choreographed fights since I saw real live competition. The camera work stays at a distance so you can see the movement between the fighters. The fights are hard-hitting and looks quite real, they aren`t overly long and excellently paced. These characters are supposed to be lethal weapons but no one said they were emotionless. The fighters in this film feel very human, you see their concentration in their eyes and they can feel pain. The magic is that they manage to overcome the pain.

From the film’s opening act, you see the depths of Giryu, Taikan and Choei’s soul. Taikan is a young man who revels in competition and violent encounter to find the art’s meaning. Choei is the weakest student, but he is level-headed and truthful to himself which is why he was chosen to pick their master’s successor after his death. Giryu is very traditional, Shibahara’s teachings are similar to a religion to him and he would rather die than to stray from his teachings. “Karate is not to throw a punch or a kick, never attack, instead defend against an opponent’s attack–parry and stave off the opponent. This way you can reach perfection” as quoted by Sensei Shibahara.

While the film is quite predictable, the direction is very solid and the script is sharp. I called this film a Martial Arts melodrama because it focuses on its characters but let me once again make it clear that action fans won’t be disappointed. The absence of CGI and wirework in its fights are the film’s biggest strength and simplicity is its expression. The final encounter is shot in black and white perhaps to emphasize the clash between the Yin and the Yang, or to remind us that Karate is an ancient art that existed for hundreds of years.

“KURO OBI” is a beautiful film, it is definitely a thinking man’s film. The film set out to express the soul of Karate and director Nagasaki has achieved what he wanted to do by carefully measuring his approach. The film’s simple plot may be its Achilles’ heel but as with Karate, simplicity is often the most effective approach. After all, throwing too many punches can hurt a fighter himself, as can pitching too many ideas can hurt a film. “Black Belt” is solid, and nicely executed.

What is really worth fighting for? The goal is not for competition but the battle for enlightenment. Black can never look dirty, and a fighter must be pure. The Belt represents willpower.

“From Strength will come compassion, from compassion, strength will emerge”

Highly Recommended!! [4 ½ Stars]

As a student of traditional JKA Shotokan karate for many years and an avid martial arts movie fan I have to say that I was stunned by this movie - in all my years this is the first time that I have seen a movie about traditional karate. I was overwhelmed by the characters depiction of traditional karate and when I did my research on the two principle characters and found out that they are 6th degree (JKA) and 5th degree (Goju) karate masters I was VERY impressed.

I will not try and give a review of the film (that has already been done) - I will just say if you are a traditional karate student - see this movie - if not see it anyway.

Note: When Sensei Naka performs the kata’s Nijushiho and Meikyo I felt a sense of pride in knowing that the general public was finally getting a chance to see actual traditional style karate (no offense to the Goju kata (smile)).

Purchase this movie - maybe more will be made.

There is much praise heaped upon Mizoguchi Kenji’s “Sansho the Bailiff,” including the box cover calling it “one of the finest films ever made.” I probably wouldn’t go that far, but it is an excellent movie ranking amongst the best of the genre, standing tall with Kurosawa Akira films such as “Red Beard.” It is very heavy, with a strong message.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Sansho the Bailiff - Criterion Collection! Click Here

Like Kurosawa, social responsibility is a strong theme in Mizoguchi’s works. In “Sansho the Bailiff,” we see a blending of the social classes, as an honest aristocrat is exiled, his wife sold to a brothel and his children made slaves, all because the aristocrat believed peasants deserved happiness as well, and that the aristocratic class had responsibilities to the peasants. Mixed together, you see cruelty and mercy amongst both classes, from the tyrannical Sansho and his friendly son Taro, or the martyred slave Namiji and the cruel Zushio willing to brand another slave on the head with a hot iron.

To this there is the message of mercy. “Be hard on yourself, but merciful to others” is the mantra passed from parent to child. A sacred image of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, is a family heirloom, passed down from generations as a reminder.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Sansho the Bailiff - Criterion Collection! Click Here

As in all Mizoguchi’s films, it is ultimately the women who suffer, bearing the sins of men on their capable shoulders. Mizoguchi is considered a feminist in Japan, although the standards are different and most Americans would probably not consider “Sansho the Bailiff” a feminist film.

It is nice to see this important film get the Criterion treatment. Along with the usual pristine transfer and updated subtitles, a translated version of Ogai Mori’s 1915 “Sansho Dayu,” the story that inspired “Sansho the Bailiff,” is also included.

If you are looking for light entertainment, this is not the movie to get. But if you want a film that gives a powerful portrayal of human suffering and the quest for justice, then you might want to consider Sansho the Bailiff. The story has its roots in Japanese folklore. Another reviewer has already given the basic plot, so I won’t waste time on that. All I can say is that this movie is both heart-wrenching and breathtakingly beautiful. I first saw this film some 30 years ago and many of the images still stick in my mind. The scene midway through the film where Zushio and his sister Anju pull down a tree branch (a reccurence of an earlier scene) is one of those magical moments in cinema. The overall camerawork in this movie is second to none. Note how Mizoguchi will sometimes have the camera zoom out or pan away from highly emotional scenes. A lesser director would probably zoom “in” to exploit the situation. It’s as though Mizoguchi doesn’t want us to become too emotionally attached. Perhaps he is telling us that suffering, as much as we may abhore it, is just a part of this transient life. Whether you agree with my interpretation is not important. This film can work for moviegoers on many levels. Just be prepared for a highly-charged experience, if you rent or buy this video.

A riveting, inspiring piece of American history, seeing the legendary Jackie Robinson play himself is a rare experience; a man who did so much to change the face of segregation, with enormous courage and extraordinary talent.

This is a film everyone, young and old, black and white, should see. Buy it, keep it, give it as a gift. This film is a treasure, even for those of us who are not baseball fans, and like me, don’t really understand the game…this film is about so much more…it is the portrait of an era, and the man who was able to make a difference.

Jackie Robinson has a beauty in his face, and is a charismatic screen presence. He is backed by some excellent actors, like Ruby Dee, who plays Rae, his wife, and Minor Watson, terrific as Branch Rickey, who was president of The Brooklyn Dodgers, and also an interesting character. Rickey made a judgement call to hire Jackie, and was proved right, despite much opposition. Humor is provided by the very funny Ben Lessy as Shorty.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Jackie Robinson Story! Click Here

The film starts with Robinson as a young boy, through his college years at UCLA, and his time with the Panthers, an all-black team, then a stint in the military during WWII, and later trying to get a job as a coach, with no results.

Robinson of course suffered endless slurs and hatred in the early years with the Dodgers. Mr. Rickey made Robinson promise that he would never fight back when insulted, and even hit, and Robinson replied, “Mr. Rickey, I have two cheeks”.

The first game he played with “organized baseball” was in 1946, and changed sports history, and a hero was born. God bless Jackie Robinson, for all he did for sports, and all he achieved for humanity.

With well paced direction by Alfred E. Green, a nice somewhat corny but appropriate score by Herschel Burke Gilbert, and the great Ernest Laszlo did the cinematography, which captures the enthusiasm of the game.

Total running time is 77 minutes.

This is a very heartwarming story of perseverance by one of the best ball players of the era. A model citizen in a difficult position, Jackie shows all of us how to respond to adversity and prejudice. I bought this DVD for my son.

In case you didn’t notice this is the only DVD of this movie with close-captioning AND a color option.

I just saw for the first time ever this movie made in 1950; directed by Vincente Minnelli; and starring Elizabeth Taylor, Spencer Tracy and Joan Bennett. Ms. Taylor was only 18 when she made this film and was frightening and eternally beautiful. She is so petite that she almost could adorn her own wedding cake. The movie, however, as the title implies, belongs to Mr. Tracy who plays her father who cannot bear to see his little daughter grow up and get married. There is a lot of most fathers in Mr. Tracy’s character. He has some great lines and some funny scenes and endears himself to us with his gentle humor– the footage where he gets stuck in his kitchen making drinks and doesn’t get to make a speech about his beloved daughter, just to point out one delightful instance. He is such a bungler– can’t get to Ms. Taylor at the wedding reception to bid her goodbye either.

I did not find this 54 year-old movie dated at all. Some things never change. Love may be eternal and most families the world over act pretty much the same when it comes to seeing their children leave home.

First, a warning: this is the colorized version of this classic black and white film, so avoid it if you’re a film connoisseur. The original black and white version is infinitely superior to this poorly done colorization.

Now, the good news. This film showcases Spencer Tracy’s remarkable acting ability and he delivers a witty and intelligent performance as Elizabeth Taylor’s long-suffering father. Spence has several monologues which are a joy to watch. His acting gift (along with Charles Laughton) is an absolute wonder and it’s always a pleasure to watch him. Joan Bennet is adequate in a supporting role and Elizabeth Taylor is breathtaking as the 18-year-old soon to be wed daughter. Liz’s performance is actually quite good and her interplay with Tracy is especially effective.

Yes, this movie is dated in places, but Tracy’s performance is worth watching the entire movie. He is in nearly every scene and transforms a seemingly average movie into something really special.
