In addition to the program itself, there’s a whole raft of extra features, including multiple commentary tracks, deleted scenes, trailers, bumps and oodles of other nonsense!

It’s one heck of a show, and only someone with a midicolorian count in the negative numbers would… would…

Ah, hell, I can’t keep this up. It’s a good disc. If you liked the first, you’ll like this. Buy and enjoy! I certainly did. :)

The first Robot Chicken: Star Wars (about 23 minutes only) had a couple of chuckles, but this second one (60 minutes) was the one that really had tons of laughs.

I really enjoyed Left Bank as it reminded me a great deal of Robin Hardy’s chilling film, The Wicker Man. If a tense, slow-moving film that carefully weaves pagan tradition, the supernatural and the female reproductive cycle sounds like your thing, I cannot recommend Left Bank enough. It does take its time building tension but Eline Kuppens delivers a captivating performance as Marie and, let’s be honest, the pay-off makes the wait worthwhile. I’m sure you’ve heard that before but this succeeds in the finale where most films fail.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Left Bank! Click Here

While watching this film I had a distinct feeling creep over me that I’d not felt in quite some time…fear. Marie’s ever-worsening wound, the black pool, pagan sacrifice…unnerving stuff.

I plan to purchase Left Bank, in my opinion it was that good. As I’d mentioned above, it shared quite a few similarities to The Wicker Man and I absolutely love that film. Granted there’s no outburst of singing or anything like that here but pagan terror and raw sexuality do abound and I’m just so tired of horror cinema holding my hand. It’s refreshing to see intelligent horror again.

Sometimes dubbed “the Master of the Macabre,” director Brian De Palma is best known for his enactments of the supernatural (”Carrie”), mania (”Dressed to Kill”) - and his mob stories. The latter part of his reputation is primarily grounded on four of his movies from the ten-year period between 1983 and 1993: “Scarface” (1983, starring Al Pacino), “Wise Guys” (1986, starring Danny De Vito, Joe Piscopo and Harvey Keitel), “Carlito’s Way” (1993, again starring Pacino) … and “The Untouchables” (1987), featuring an all-star cast including Robert De Niro, Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Andy Garcia and Charles Martin Smith. Among these, “The Untouchables” stands out as the only movie not primarily told from the gangster’s but from the lawmen’s perspective - but what it does share with all of De Palma’s works is an almost voyeuristic appeal to its audience’s visual senses; going far beyond the lavish display of film blood it is most often cited for.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Untouchables! Click Here

Less fact-based than cinematic grand opera par excellence, the movie takes as its premise the end of the career of Chicago’s ganglord of ganglords, Al “Scarface” Capone, who (after a few half-hearted attempts to prosecute him for murder had failed due to the unavailability of witnesses) pled guilty, in 1931, to evading federal income tax, and was sentenced to an 11-year prison term and a $50,000 fine. Capone’s downfall was brought about by a group of initially 50 but later only nine Treasury Agents, formed in 1929 (not in 1930, as suggested here) with the express purpose of breaking up his operations, and headed by Eliot Ness, whose 1957 book “The Untouchables” posthumously gave new rise to his fame - Ness died of a heart attack without ever having witnessed the full extent of his book’s success - and inspired, inter alia, the like-named 1959 television series starring Robert Stack and Brian De Palma’s 1987 movie.

Scripted by Pulitzer Prize winner and Chicago native David Mamet (”Glengarry Glen Ross”), “The Untouchables” is not so much a study in character development as based on a western’s classic “good versus evil” setup; although that doesn’t mean that its protagonists are two-dimensional in any way. On the contrary: Robert De Niro imbues his Capone with a ruthlessness and glib charm very likely matching those of the real “Scarface,” who was known for his little hesitation to commit murder and other acts of violence as much as he cultivated a reputation as a savvy businessman and benefactor of the poor, for example by running several soup kitchens. (And yes, all of De Niro’s mannerisms are on full display, too; but rarely have they fitted a role as well as here.) Kevin Costner’s Eliot Ness may be a little too assertive - Robert Stack once commented, after several conversations with Ness’s nearest and dearest, that the real-life Treasury Agent had been described to him as “rather soft-spoken, but very effective and brave” - but mildness is certainly not the principle trait written into the larger-than-life role of the man who “got” Al Capone, and Costner *is* an effective lead; although he is matched (not entirely sidelined, but darn near outplayed) by Sean Connery, who deservedly won an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a National Board of Review Award as the crotchety old-timer Malone who has seen it all, somehow managed to stay both clean and alive, and now lets Ness talk him into becoming his tutor in all things Chicago Gangland. Andy Garcia, in his break-through role, is instantly likable as George Stone, the smart, fast kid from the South Side who doesn’t take kindly to put-downs of his origin but can nail a human target with one hand while lying down and holding a baby stroller with the other hand. Charles Martin Smith finally brings humanity and subtle humor to the character probably closest to the real-life “Untouchables,” accountant Oscar Wallace, who first has the idea to charge Capone for income tax evasion. Strong performances by Billy Drago as Capone’s right-hand man Frank Nitti (who of course was not really thrown off a rooftop by Ness), Richard Bradford as Police Chief Mike Dorsett, Patricia Clarkson as Ness’s wife, Jack Kehoe as Capone’s bookkeeper Walter Payne and others round out an altogether impressive cast.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Untouchables! Click Here

Unmistakeably scored by Ennio Morricone (whose style often, and certainly here, doesn’t even take a full bar to recognize; and who with an ASCAP Award, a Grammy and a BAFTA Award was the movie’s other major winner besides Connery), “The Untouchables” lives off its splendid cinematography, production design - costumes courtesy of Giorgio Armani - and the exquisite timing of its sharp-edged dialogue and editing: Not only is screenwriter Mamet known to have his actors practice their lines according to a metronome; the editing of some of the movie’s most memorable scenes has the distinct feeling of a carefully choreographed, veritable ballet. This is particularly true for Malone’s death, pointedly set against the aria “Vesti la Giubba” from Ruggero Leoncavallo’s opera “I Pagliacci” (”The Clowns”), which is based on a real-life murder and which Capone attends while his lieutenants waylay Malone in his own apartment; and the famous shoot-out in Chicago’s Union Station, which turns into a deadly dance of bullets, blood and a baby stroller, shot almost entirely in slow motion.

Paradoxically, the one plot element this movie is most often criticized for - the jury switch at Capone’s trial - is one of the few facts that actually did take place (although Capone’s attorney would have had to be given the right to conduct a new voir dire). But ultimately, it doesn’t even really matter how much of the plot is fact-based and how much fiction: Even if “The Untouchables” doesn’t quite reach the mythical status of the “Godfather” trilogy - particularly its Parts 1 and 2 - as the mob movie to end all mob movies, it is one of only a handful other films that at least come close to the proportions of Francis Ford Coppola’s epic masterpiece.

This volume gets right to the heart of the plot, and raises important questions. Who really is Gohda? Where is the next refugee threat coming from? Who tried to kill the Prime Minster, and what roll does he play in the Individual Eleven? Is there a terrorist virus causing another stand alone complex? Can Togusa finds his way clear of criminal charges? Also, we all know The Major, but what of her past?

I liked this series, but in my opinion, the puppeteer hacker character is not quite as good as ths laughing man storyline of original Stand Alone Complex, and the message is not quite as profound. First off, if I could give this miniseries 10, 20, a zillion stars, I would. Amazon just didn’t let me count high enough.

So let me get ahold of myself long enough to tell you to run, run, run and get this DVD set now, if you haven’t already. “From the Earth to the Moon” is one of the most unique and engrossing (as well as gorgeously produced) miniseries I’ve ever seen — 12 hours of moving, dramatic, gripping, frightening, and ultimately completely inspiring entertainment. As a kid born in the late sixties, I missed the moon race (and I’m still ticked about it). But this literally perfect 12-episode miniseries makes me feel as if I’ve been there too — from the tragedy of Apollo 1 to the triumphs and near-misses of the ensuing missions, to the vastly underappreciated final Apollo 16 and 17 missions. (As one character in the film laments, “We stopped going up just when we were getting really good at it.”)

Those of you who might have avoided this because it’s “history” — let me reassure you right now that it’s as gripping as any drama you’ll see in or out of a theatre. This isn’t just history painstakingly created by some of those who were there — it’s also just plain incredible, suspenseful, joyful entertainment.

And for those of you who saw it on HBO, the DVD set is well worth the price, even if you’d already taped it. The DVD set offers not only crystal-clear viewing you’d expect (and the special effects hold up admirably under the discerning eye offered through DVD), but also special features including an enjoyable making-of featurette (emphasizing Tom Hanks’ huge role in bringing the project to the screen), plus behind-the-scenes studies of special effects, 3D ship models (which can be rotated or even viewed in wireframe), a transcript of Kennedy’s “We Choose to go to the Moon” speech, a follow-up quiz, and a virtual tour of the solar system. And that’s just for starters.

The writing, acting, music, direction and more are all simply superb — each hour out of the twelve having its own particular look and feel, while nevertheless meshing perfectly with the others. The introductions to each chapter in Apollo history are delivered quietly, but with eloquence and power, by the project’s producer, co-writer, actor (and driving force) Tom Hanks.

One of my favorite aspects of the project was the way it brought in so many actors who are often underused (or at least under-appreciated) in TV and film today — many of whom are cast against type to show what they can really do. Stephen Root, a guy I’d loved as Jimmy James on NewsRadio for years, does a terrific job in a serious role as Mission Control’s Chris Kraft, as does Nick Searcy in a quiet and often sensitive turn as the program’s father figure Deke Slayton. Meanwhile, Stephen Root’s former NewsRadio news director Dave Foley also gets in on the action, and gets to shed his “Kids in the Hall” cynicism with a surprisingly sweet and innocent portrayal of Al Bean.

Other favorites out of the dozens of amazing actors include Ted Levine’s wistful, complex (not to mention curmudgeonly) Alan Shepard, the criminally underused Jo Anderson’s sensitive and moving Pat White (wife of Gemini and Apollo I astronaut Ed White), and memorable appearances large and small by such gifted folks as Kevin Pollak, Elizabeth Perkins, Matt Craven, Tim Daly, Mark Harmon (returning for a few moments to his lighter roots), Paul McCrane, David Clennon, James Rebhorn, Mark Rolston, Jay Mohr, George Newbern, Brett Cullen and Steve Zahn.

The surprises are the best part. Before viewing this, I would never have guessed that the Apollo 13 (”We interrupt this Program”) segment, while unique and powerful, would be my least favorite of the group, while “Spider,” a look at the development of a *machine*, for goodness’ sake, would move me to tears. Other standouts (keeping in mind that they’re all terrific) include a quietly powerful look at Apollo I, the trials and surprising fates of the astronauts’ wives in an episode directed by Sally Field, and the bittersweet old-man-as-underdog battle of Alan Shepard to make it “up there” one last time — and for more than 15 minutes.

OK, I’ll shut up. But if you ever have a day when you’ve encountered a really stupid driver, or been detained in ridiculous meetings with half-brained bozos, or wondered if human beings aren’t actually DE-volving — then this miniseries is just the kind of thing to remind you of what human beings can be at their very best. And what wonders they are capable of.

And I can’t believe I missed it all. We just better go back. Darn it.

NOTE: For those of you inspired by the miniseries, I strongly urge you to go pick up Andrew Chaikin’s wonderful “A Man on the Moon,” the history of Apollo that provided much of the backbone for the miniseries. And for an even closer look at the moon, don’t miss “Full Moon” (Michael Light and Andrew Chaikin) — a truly stunning, beautiful, even eerie compilation of lunar photographs, many of which had never before been seen.

I don’t intend to review the content of this DVD set as it has been covered in great detail by many hundreds already. If you love top-class historical drama and enjoyed Apollo 13, you probably know about the quality of this miniseries already. My rating for the miniseries itself is 9.5 out of 10.

This is a short review to point out the differences between the 2000 4-Disc box set and the 2005 Signature Edition 5-disc box set.

Buy,Download, Or Stream From the Earth to the Moon - The Signature Edition! Click Here

In case you have already got the 2000 DVD set in your collection and are wondering whether to update it to the 2005 edition, here are the differences:

Firstly, there are 5 discs instead of 4, but NO difference in content. No extra scenes, documentaries or commentary. The original DVD-Rom Disc 4 has been re-authored to play on your DVD player in the lounge room. This makes a lot of the content immediately accessible instead of having to search for it on the net, but the interactivity is gone. For me that’s small loss as I didn’t get much out of the games etc anyway.

Secondly, the entire set has been remastered in DTS and Widescreen (1.85:1). Now this sounds like manna from heaven, but unfortunately only the audio remastering is really worth spending any extra dollars on. The sound is crisp, clear and beautifully mixed and the liftoffs etc come booming out of your home theatre system like you were there at the Cape.

But the widescreen - well, sadly it just doesn’t enhance the original viewing experience. It’s evident that HBO produced the original series in 1.33:1 for tv and have merely re-jigged and adapted that ratio for the modern proliferation of widescreen plasma television sets. There is no extra data. You will find some scenes are better cut in the frame, but others suffer. For example, in Disc 1, when the Gemini 8/Agena assembly is tumbling around the sky with a stuck thruster, you don’t see the thruster in the new widescreen version as it is cut off by the top of the frame. Some captions have also been compromised.

As the series was created for the 1.33:1 ratio, all the crucial information is positioned inside the frame for that ratio anyway. The only advantage of the widescreen ratio is that it now fits your new plasma widescreen without the black bars. Also the video quality is not as crisp as I expected it to be, possibly from the re-sizing process.

Each chapter now gets its own play and audio options menu and there are 3 chapters per disc, which is tidier. However there are still those weird groupings of episodes where some contain the titles and some don’t. Nothing has changed here.

The box looks impressive with the silver signature cover and Tom’s moniker on it and there is a nice holo of the Earth and the Moon which alternates as you tilt it this way and that.

But, in a major disappointment to this buyer, the original cardboard foldout format is identical to its 2000 counterpart. My box broke apart after about a year due to excessive wear and tear and sadly I fear this box will succumb to the same fate. Two of my discs had already broken free from their moorings in transit and were sliding all round the inside of the box, picking up scratches and marks in the process. Poor packaging.

How I wish they’d used the Battlestar Galactica Season 1 format where all discs sit securely in plastic pages like the leaves of a book. Sturdier, simpler and more durable.

In summary, if you don’t have From the Earth to the Moon, then buy this 2005 set. If you have it already and are wondering whether to spend $100 on a better version, think twice. You may think it’s worth it to get better sound, but unless you are an audiophile with a top home theater surround system and DTS, you probably won’t notice. You may be better off spending your money on other titles.

I can’t believe it’s been ten years since this movie came out. It’s had an immeasurable impact on the animation field and movies in general. At the same time, its flaws are evident. The humans look as plastic as the toys, and the fur on the dog is laughable. Computers have come a long way in ten years.

Whether this movie was any good or not, it would have been an important milestone. Fortunately, it succeeds on an entertainment level as well. The story is masterfully told revealing plot points and character equally. The movie is extremely funny as well; with lots of jokes for the adults in the audience and some classic lines I quote all the time. Plus it introduces us to a Pixar staple, the climax that will not quit.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Toy Story! Click Here

Pixar has released great DVD’s from the start, and this two-disc set is no different. The movie is transferred directly from the digital files, so the picture is perfect. Sound is wonderful in two separate 5.1 surround tracks. Many of these extras are from the Ultimate Toy Box release of a few years ago, and they are well worth having. The commentary is very informative. The deleted scenes are interesting, but it’s obvious why they were deleted. The new features looking back at the movie from ten years later are wonderful as well.

This is a ground breaking movie that is just as much fun to watch as it is historic. I hadn’t watched it in quite some time and was reminded just how fun it is. I’ve got to watch it more often.

10 years. 20 years. It will be 50 years and this movie won’t get old. It doesn’t matter that animation is 100 times more detailed and cooler today than it was in 1995, when the movie first came out. The strength of this movie is in the story. There is so much territory to explore on this flic, and you have so much fun while you watch it, that you will never grow tired of it. And, with a 2.5-year old who loves to see Woody once and again, I can tell you it really doesn’t get old, no matter how many times you watch it!

The second disc does a superb job of accompanying the Pixar classic, going into the legendary details that have made Pixar’s DVDs famous. There is plenty to sink your teeth into, for the die-hard fans and those who are simply a bit curious alike. The entire package is a movie for all ages, for the ages. Get it and enjoy it once and again. The truth is you can never go wrong with Woody and Buzz Lightyear!

This film was absolutely beautiful. It has that shy pre-emptiveness we expect from films which deal with tender topics such as love and approaching a girl. We all know that the chances of watching a Jennifer Aniston film and being completely bowled over are slim but this film does do that. I thought she was very good in the film and man, did the film have it’s funny moments. Before watching this film, I saw Sunshine Cleaning and I quite liked the film. The one thing that is common between this film and Sunshine is Steve Zahn. Management, however, is the film that I liked more and I thought it had it’s heart in the right place. At just 1 hour 20 minutes, this film never promises to conquer the world but it makes you go into guffaws.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Management! Click Here

This film has no flaws and unlike films like “You, Me and Dupree” this film never tries too hard to be cute. It’s amazing how such films can be churned out even in 2009. I wish I had waited and seen this at the movies but that was not meant to be. I sneaked an advanced screening copy from some place and I’m sorry for that. There is wonderful chemistry between Zahn and Aniston. Girls, you will love this. Guys, you will not hate your girls for this. Genuine, free spirited and unabashed.

Steve Zahn and Jennifer Aniston are indeed an awkward couple, which is why I think they work so perfectly together in this awkward little romantic comedy. Zahn plays Mike, the night manager at his parent’s Arizona motel and Aniston is Sue, a traveling corporate art seller. Mike is quirky and odd, he does yoga and brings Sue complimentary bottles of wine and champagne to try to hit on her when she stays in the motel on a business trip. Sue is uptight and self absorbed; she’s adamant about recycling and feeding the homeless. The two are complete opposites but when Sue gives in to Mike just a little, he refuses to give up till he gets the girl.

This is not your typical cutesy romantic comedy. There are odd silent moments between the two characters which definitely make it uncomfortable for the movie viewer, but it also makes the movie more real. There are so many people in the world who do get wrapped up in their boring lives and refuse to live a little, and this film might have them wishing that someone like Mike would come knocking on their motel room door and want to “touch their butt” and force them to bend and break and live a little.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Management! Click Here

Mike takes chances to go after the girl even when Sue jumps on a plane to go home. It’s obvious when he buys a one way ticket to go see her, not just because he didn’t have enough money to get back if things didn’t work out. And even though she turns him away, he still refuses to give up no matter how odd or boring she turns out to be. It may seem he just isn’t good enough for her, but when Mike returns to Arizona to say good-bye to his dying mom, he realizes he can’t give up. If you really want something, you’ve got to put down the cards that life deals you and go out there and get it. Even when Sue is ready to settle down and all her dreams come crashing down, Mike is still there for her. It’s the classic tale of the boy waiting to get the girl, even after her Prince Charming is gone.

Woody Harrelson and Margo Martindale make up an excellent supporting cast in this sweet little film. See it for yourself and be the judge. The humor is very real and doesn’t seem forced at all which is why I think I appreciated it so much. You too might find yourself wanting to live a little after this one. If anything, you’ll learn to manage!
