The series is created in a similar style as “Blue’s Clues” and “Dora the Explorer” in terms of the main character interacting with the viewer. “MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE” features Mickey Mouse as the main character communicating with his friends and then occasionally looking towards the viewer for help in a variety of adventures.

Mickey Mouse uses a variety of tools and a compass to help them solve their problems and get from point A to point B.

For this DVD release of “Mickey’s Big Splash”, the theme revolves around the Summer time. The episodes features a total of four episodes (24:05 minutes each) which include:

1. Donald’s Ducks - This bonus episode features Mickey Mouse, Pluto, Donald Duck and Goofy. As the two hang out at the clubhouse, they hear ducks quacking. The group finds eight ducks that need help getting to the beach for the Winter. Using Mickey’s mousketools, the viewer must help Mickey decide which tools can be used to help get the ducks to the beach.

2. Pluto’s Bubble Bath - This episode features Mickey Mouse, Minny Mouse and Pluto. With Pluto playing outdoors, he’s gotten muddy and thus he needs to get a bath. Using Mickey’s mousketools, the viewer must help Mickey decide which tools to use for a bath. But when the bubbles start to grow and become more powerfu, Mickey and Pluto are caught in a bubble and taken high above the planet and the viewer along with Donald Duck and Goofy must find a way to get them down.

3. Mickey Goes Fishing - Goofy is going on vacation and has to leave his kitten, Mr. Pettibone with Mickey. But somehow all Mr. Pettibone’s gooey fish must have fallen out of the box when Goofy stopped by and now Mickey and the viewer must find a way to get more fish to feed Goofy’s kitten.

4. Pete’s Beach Blanket Luau - The temperature is quite hot and Mickey and friends want to cool down. Pete invites Mickey and his friends to come to his beach blanket luau at Star Lake. Mickey asks the viewer if they can help him and the friends setup a luau at the beach.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE” features colorful CG animated episodes for the children. Nothing too detailed but simple and clean enough for the young children to enjoy. Presentation is in Full Screen and an aspect ratio of 1:33:1.

As for the audio, audio is presented in Dolby Digital Surround Sound plus French and Spanish language tracks.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The DVD comes with a game called “Fun in the Sun with Mickey and the Gang Game” (featured only in English). As the group is setting up the luau, the viewer can use their remote or computer mouse to help Donald Duck select items that don’t belong on the beach.

JUDGMENT CALL:

“MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE” is a straightforward DVD release for parents to have their children watch (or assist the children in helping them make decisions).

Each of the four episodes are family friendly and include Mickey Mouse and many of his friends during the Summer. From helping ducks get to the beach, Pluto getting clean after stepping in the mud, Mickey going fishing for food for Goofy’s kitten and helping set up a luau at Star Lake.

The DVD is targeted towards parents who have children that are around 3-5 years old and each episode is educational and enjoyable with the storyline being adventurous, fun, humorous but yet simple, straightforward and non-frightening.

So, the series is toddler friendly and yes, even the character of Pete is in his good behavior and friends with Mickey Mouse and the others and also encourages the viewer to help out as well.

If you are a parent looking for a DVD that can be educational and fun for your young children and/or looking for a DVD that allows for parents and children to work together as a team, you can’t go wrong with “MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE: Mickey’s Big Splash”. Definitely give it a try!

Brian Regan is a great comedian for the whole family. My wife and kids love walking through the house yelling “What’s the score, Brian?” “Snowcone! Whole snowcone for half game!” He’s a great guy, and his humor is something you can enjoy with everyone.

If you own his live CD or earlier DVD, you’ll find this contains almost all new material. One of the bonus features is his encore in which he does requests from the audience from his material. It’s stuff you’ve heard before, but the funny way he points that out is hilarious (”You’re out there going, ‘Yep, that’s the way I memorized it.’”) His first Comedy Central Presents appearance is included and there’s no repeats from the “Standing Up” special in it. If this is your first introduction to Brian’s comedy, it’s a great place to start. Grab his live CD next. The CC Presents half-hour show has some of that material on it, but it’s still funny.

I wish there were more comedians out there like Brian. He manages to be funny without ever being vulgar. I don’t know why he isn’t more popular, but with his CC sponsored national tour maybe he’ll finally get the exposure he deserves.

I had never heard of Brian Regan, then I came across his stand-up special on Comedy Central. He is absolutely hilarious. When I first watched it my Mom was over and I was afraid I’d end up turning it off 10 minutes into the show because of nasty language or crude content. To our delight there was nothing of the kind. And he has priceless facial expressions. He’s very similar to Seinfeld - in that his routines focus on the mundane, ordinary things in life, but somehow he manages to make it funny. His bits include subjects such as TV, airlines/airports and politics. Simple ideas - with comical twists - and absolutely no language or sexual references. It CAN be done!

Johnny is a homeless, angry young man who can speak at great length and with GREAT eloquence on an incredibly wide variety of topics. He is smarter than basically anyone he meets or ever will meet but he has no job, no place to live and has no interest in having either. He arrives in London and sets out on an odyssey through the night to spread his philosophy on life to anyone who will listen. Doesn’t sound like much of a film huh? Make no mistake this is one of the best films EVER made and contains a performance that can match De Niro, Hoffman or Brando any day. David Thewlis won best actor at cannes for his genuinely incredible performance in this masterpiece, and it’s easy to see why. The raw power that he brings to this role has to be seen to be believed. Some people expressed surprise at his lack of an academy award nomination. Let’s be honest about it. The performances that stay with you after the credits roll are too good for oscars. Day-Lewis in Gangs Of New York,Samuel L. Jackson in Jungle Fever, Campbell Scott in Roger Dodger, Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire, Newman in Hud and most of all David Thewlis for this film. Ignore the hype about the violence in this film. Robert De Niro played a violent person in Raging Bull and what did he get? A golden globe AND the oscar. David Thewlis lost because he played this role with unblinking conviction. De Niro was sexually violent in CAPE FEAR and he was nominated at the academy awards. Thewlis and De Niro both took the method approach to these roles, so why did the academy overlook Thewlis? If this film didn’t win the best actor and best director awards at Cannes I seriously think that it would be virtually unknown. Now that Thewlis and director Mike Leigh are back in the public eye. Thewlis in KINGDOM OF HEAVEN and Leigh with his harrowing VERA DRAKE, it is a perfect time for a new audience to discover NAKED and see it for what it is a masterpiece. Like always the best films are sadly unavailable on dvd. This film is one of those rare times when I’d even settle for an extras free disc. If it wasn’t for criterion, modern masterpieces like Glengarry Glen Ross and NAKED would come out on dvd with nothing but a trailer. There are two reasons why NAKED didn’t win the oscars for best actor,film or screenplay: money and politics. This film wasn’t marketable or politically correct. To see an actor like Thewlis wasted in rubbish films like Dragonheart is ridiculous. You would think that an awards academy who gave Sean Penn an oscar for his performance in Mystic River where he played an ultimately vicious and violent character and Anthony Hopkins who played one of the most evil characters of recent memory in The Silence Of The Lambs would at least give THewlis a nomination. Thewlis gives one of the best performances in the history of cinema and regardless of what the academy thought of the film Thewlis has created a character that will never be forgotten. At the end of the day a film like NAKED can’t be measured by the box office or the amount of awards that it wins but by it’s impact on a visceral level.

I first saw this in a little run-down art house theater. The auditorium was empty except for an old woman and two strange men who, lured by the title and the fishnet stockings on the original poster, had obviously come expecting a different kind of movie than the one they got. There were times during the screening when I almost felt as if the theater had become part of the movie.

This is a film that’s fascinating, but, damn, it’s a bit of a ride. I’m frequently catching it late at night, on IFC, and even just a few moments almost always wear me out — definitely a movie that brings to your attention when you need to go to bed. I appreciate “Naked,” as a filmic experience, and it is indeed an incredible one, but I have to wonder if this is what movies are supposed to do.

Still, it does what it does and what it does is unlike anything else you could want to find.

David Thewlis may have made a mistake starring in this because he is so brilliant, so engaging, so horrifying, so smart, so black that to this day, I still have a hard time seeing him as any other character — whether he’s in “Gangster #1″ or “The Prisoner of Azkaban.” It’s great work. He’ll make you laugh, he’ll make you cry, he’ll make you carsick.

I’d also like to nominate the scene between Johnny and the security guard — their discussion of time, and space, and barcodes and apocalypse and Dadaist nuns — to be elected to the office of the great scenes of the 90s, and to take a place on the larger list of the great cinematic moments altogether.

I had heard about Shaolin Soccer (2001) a couple of years ago from a friend, as he had recommended it to me, knowing the particular way some of my tastes ran, and I am glad he did, as it’s a heady mix of the wacky, the absurd, and the just plain fun. The movie starts off with a flashback, showing an extremely popular Chinese soccer player named Golden Leg Fung accepting money to throw a game from a lackey, and the consequences of his actions, including a severely crippling beating by the crowd after purposely missing a rather easy goal scoring opportunity. Now, it’s many years later, and Fung now works for the gangster organization that had originally paid him off, in a completely demeaning position. He dreams of coaching, but the once lackey who owns the current champion soccer team and is also chairman of the league, finds this notion completely humorous, and heap further degradations upon Fung. Despondent, Fung ends up meeting a vagabond/shaolin follower called Steel Leg, and formulates a plan to build a new soccer team around this exceptional martial artist. Fung also finds out Steel Leg has enough brothers, all once trained in martial arts, to make up a team. Each brother has their own, unique ability, and soon they begin to practice. During their first practice, the men suffer a fairly brutal beating (this whole pain, beating, and humiliation factor seems to be a constant theme throughout), but soon find their shaolin training coming back to them, and turn the tables on their opponents. They enter the tournament, sweeping through the ranks, until finally the meet with the current champions, the Evil Team (I’m not kidding, that’s their name), and meet the ultimate challenge, as the chairman gives his team a decidedly unfair advantage. Will the shaolin players be victorious, or will they suffer the crushing defeat at the hands of the chairman and his evil team?

The special effects here are truly amazing and inventive, making for the most insane soccer playing I’ve ever seen. Imagine someone being able to kick a soccer ball with the same force of shooting it out of a cannon, and with pinpoint accuracy. There is not really a lot of actual soccer playing, in the traditional sense, as with the abilities of the players, the ball mainly zooms around in a very cartoonish manner. Mixing kung fu and soccer is certainly and interesting concept, and provides some really spectacular visuals. The English captioning is really bad, but certainly gave me much to laugh about, along with the seriously outlandish overacting.

Special features include an option to watch the film with the deleted scenes, the deleted scenes by themselves, a trailer, biographies, a featurette on the making of the film, a photo gallery, and behind the scenes featurette on how the special effects were made. All in all, Shaolin Soccer is an unsane, over the top comedy steeped in outrageous action and definitely worth a look if you care to expand your horizons.

I was first introduced to this movie when my girlfriend demanded that we watch it. I’ve never been a fan of martial arts movies, so I was extremely iffy about it. I also am not a fan of subtitles, so this movie was in the trash as far as I was concerned, but being the good boyfriend I am, I decided I could tough through a two hour movie and maybe catch a couple of z’s while I was at it. But after the movie started, my opinion almost immedietely changed.

From the opening scene this movie grabs you and doesn’t let go. It is easily one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen. It is creative and the effects aren’t as cheesy as you might think. I sat with my jaw dropped for two hours, thinking to myself “How many other movies have I blown off that might be great?”

I can’t wait for the theatrical release where it will be dubbed in English. I hope they come out with a DVD with an English dub too.

Kung Fu drastically challenged the conservative, militaristic, and philosophically naive outlook I held as a 20 year old college student and “gung-ho” ROTC cadet in 1972. Now, 36 years later, I have had the opportunity to watch Kung Fu once more, and the impact has been nearly as powerful. I have been disabled for severe depression and anxiety for over 15 years, including close to two years of hospitalization. In all of that time I have barely moved forward–until re-watching Kung Fu. The show has visually reminded me of many things, repeatedly told me by therapists, in such a way that I am once again able to reflect–especially while watching the show–a little more positively on my life.

That is the beauty and mastery of Kung Fu, one of the most intriguing shows ever made: it invokes one to THINK, discuss, and contemplate. The only other show I have seen have such an effect on so many people (nearly 90% of my ROTC class of 207 cadets watched Kung Fu as well as me), is the original two years of Star Trek. BUT, the level and intensity invoked by Kung Fu was immeasurably greater than that of Star Trek. The commentaries and features (see the Comments for listing of these items) often mention how teachers “required” students to watch Kung Fu, and then discussed the episodes in class. In deed, it is the philosophical nature of the show that most appeals to me and many who watch it.

Conversely, I will not deny that the show led me to sign up for Judo classes too (over 50% of my friends signed up for some form of martial arts), but the Karate nature of the show was never that appealing to me. Kung Fu is frequently accredited for “introducing” thousands of people to the martial arts. Unfortunately, many who watch the show or have watched the show have followed the path of what I consider “aggressive” martial arts, forgetting the retrospective nature of true Kung Fu. But, I must believe that if parents watch the show with their children, they can have an opportunity to talk with their children about both aspects of Kung Fu.

Another fabulous feature of the show is that viewers are presented with the reality of bigotry and hate–something that never ends, and is completely pertinent to today’s world. (Please see the Comments for an example of how the mere fact that I lamented–now also in the Comments–that the DVDs are in English only prompted someone “disrespectful to Americans living in AMERICA.”) Again, parents could easily use episodes to discuss and help their children–be they victims, violators, or naive–deal with bigotry and hate.

PLEASE NOTE: Warner Brothers has apparently advertised, and thus Amazon has listed, this set to contain wide-screen formate; see the Comments for more discussion on this. While the Season One episodes have been digitally reformatted “IN A “MATTED” WIDESCREEN FORMAT PRESERVING A THEATRICAL EXHIBITION ASPECT RATIO. ENHANCED FOR WIDESCREEN TVs,” all episodes and features in the Season 2 and 3 sets are in fact full screen. The release date (on Amazon and the back of the red slip case for the series) states 2007, but season boxes all state they were done in 2005; so I don’t think there is any difference between the Complete Series Box Set and the single season box sets. On an even sadder note, while Warner Brothers did attempt to improve the quality of the shows and alter the formate, they did so, with varying success, for the first season only. (Again, please see the Comments for more discussion on this matter). For the second and third seasons, Warner Brothers either did nothing or very little to restore the negatives, so the episodes are littered with white specs, scratches, and so on (although I found them no less bothersome than those found when watching a well used copy of a movie showing at a theater; for more discussion on this, see the Comments). That said, one must remain mindful of the fact that “Kung Fu” was filmed for television not the theater, was on a limited budget, and the fact that the negatives, when placed in the vault for storage, were most likely not very high quality to begin with; after all, nobody anticipated cable television syndication, let alone VHS and DVD production when the negatives were stored. On the other hand, this inconsistency in DVD quality (be it television shows or movies) is what I have now come to expect from Warner Brothers: misinformation and little or no care for their consumers; out of seventeen letters I have sent to them with questions, they have never replied to a single one.

All that said and done: Please consider renting (if available) or buying the Kung Fu series, and watch it with family and friends if you have them. “Kung Fu - The Complete Series” includes the award winning Pilot movie and all 62 episodes on 11 discs, starring David Carradine as Kiwai Chang Caine, Philip Ahn as Master Kan, and Keye Luke as Master PO. Special guest stars (some of which I have noted in the Comments) include David’s father John Carradine, Benson Fong, Harrison Ford, Jodie Foster, Don Johnson, Leslie Nielsen, William Shatner, and others. “Kung Fu” is a show that is thought provoking, educational, inspirational, and unforgettable. “Kung Fu” is a show that can be watched over and over–by yourself, with friends, or with your family. There is no other TV show that I would recommend for people of all ages than “Kung Fu”–so, treat yourself with the whole series.

UPDATE–FEBRUARY 22, 2009: It came to my attention while reading “A Kid’s Review–Kung Fu is the best, and this is the best way to own them,” that I failed to mention the great extra features included in each of the three season sets. In particular, in the Season Three Set, there is a fascinating documentary that follows David Carradine and some of his friends on a trip to China, where David is given a Shaolin robe on their visit to the famed Shaolin Temple Monastery, a key location depicted in the series, and David plays his flute on the Great Wall of China while it is snowing. For Kill Bill - Volume One and Kill Bill - Volume Two fans, there is a bonus feature on the Season Two set that features David Carradine having dinner with stars/friends from these two films and the “Kung Fu” series. (See the Comments for more details on other bonus features and special guest stars, including Harrison Ford!).

Also, I feel like this review has become too long in my efforts to answer questions. Therefore, I am going to cut my other updates and place them in a comment. For first time readers, these comments deal with the following: film format and transfer quality for each season; languages and subtitles for the episodes and extra features; the fact that the discs are double sided; more on how the series is packaged; and, bonus features (rather than listing them here). There are lots of reviews which already talk (extensively) about why Kung Fu was such a great show, and worth owning on DVD. Instead I just wanted to make sure people know what they are getting with this set…

I hesitated to buy this set at first because it had all 3 seasons packaged together, but didn’t mention anything about special features, etc. I wanted to make sure I had the commentaries & featurettes that the individual seasons boasted. Eventually, I bought this version because the price difference won me over (just before the holidays it was $35 + super saver shipping!) and I was pleased to find out that the set contained all 3 seasons as they appear individually, as well as a nice little slip cover to store them all together. The individual seasons & this package are the same, except that this one costs far less.

I purchased this DVD shortly after beginning a regular Yoga class, so that I would be able to practice at home in my spare time. At first, I found this DVD to be a little too easy, in contrast with the class, but over time have grown to love it. I usually skip the relaxation part (at the beginning) and go right into the A.M. Yoga with Rodney Yee. Not only is the music soothing to the ear, but Rodney’s voice is very calming and his nearly-naked body is in perfect shape. The A.M. portion features several stretches that really “wake up” the body and prepare it for the day ahead. His focus on the lower body (especially the part where he uses the strap) really works wonders. The P.M. section, with Patricia Walden is a little more difficult, but just as effective.
The beauty of this DVD is, that the workouts are short, and therefore much easier to fit in to a busy schedule than some of the other 70 minute Yoga DVDs out there. If you have never done Yoga before, I believe that this would be the perfect place to start. Warning: It can be addictive. I now almost suffer from withdrawl if I go too long without doing some kind of Yoga on a regular basis.
This DVD is considered a beginner’s workout, which means the poses are not too complicated and are held for very short periods of time. Once you have mastered a DVD like this, try Rodney Yee’s intermediate DVDs. Then you will explore much more difficult poses, held for longer periods of time, which can be very challenging. With both intermediate & beginner’s Yoga, it is very rewarding to find that poses that seem initially impossible become easy with continued practice (and patience).
I have since purchased several other Yoga DVDs and Videos, and must admit that the A.M. Yoga workout is still the one I do the most. If your life is full of stress, pop in A.M. and P.M. Yoga for Beginners and melt the tension away. Namaste.

I’ve got about half a dozen yoga DVDs and I find that this is the one I use the most often because it is not physically demanding, but is really effective.

The Rodney Yee program (AM) is shorter and focuses mainly on stretching out the back; I find it really helps when I’ve got any kind of lower back problem or just at stretching me out and getting me ready for the day.

The Patricia Walden program (PM) is slightly longer and focuses more on standing poses; it also has a very good deep relaxation at the end.

The only disadvantage to these Gaim DVDs is that they are programmed so that you have to play a longish commercial for all of their other products (what exacly is “organic clothing” anyway?) before you can start your workout. If you use the DVD regularly, the commercial gets really annoying after you’ve seen it about 20 times.

But all in all, this is a very useful DVD. It’s accessible for beginners but also useful for people who’ve been doing yoga for a while but are looking for a short, focused, effective workout.

A movie that would not have been out of place in the run of paranoid-political thrillers of the 1970s, Shooter works an entertaining variation on the assassination picture. Mark Wahlberg, carrying over good mojo from The Departed, slides neatly into the character of Bob Lee Swagger, master marksman. Swagger has retreated from his duty as an off-the-books hired gun for the military, having become disillusioned with his government (switching on his TV at his remote mountain cabin, he mutters, “Let’s see what kind of lies they’re trying to sell us today.”). Ah, but the government needs Swagger to scope out the location of a rumored attempt on the life of the president, so a shadowy government operative (Danny Glover) begs Swagger to use his sniper’s skills to out-fox the assassin. From there–well, spoilers are not fair, since the movie has a few legitimate shocks and a very nice wrong-man scenario about to unfold.

A novel by the Washington Post’s Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Stephen Hunter gives the movie a logical spine, even if the premise itself is the stuff of conspiracy theorists. Wahlberg gets support from Michael Pena, as a skeptical FBI agent; Kate Mara, as a trustworthy widow; and Ned Beatty, trailing along memories of Network, as a supremely cynical Senator.
