The songs may be “complete” as the DVD claims, but what isn’t mentioned is the inane narration over the beginning of just about every clip on the disk, which spoiled much of the enjoyment for me. I bought the DVD for the Connee Boswell clip (love those Boswell Sisters), but after the narration there’s just eighteen seconds of the song left. By the way, even accounting for the age/rarity of the clips, the quality of them often leaves something to be desired, as well.

`Lord of the Flies’ has been made into a movie at least twice since the William Golding novel of the same name became a cult classic / must read volume for high school and college students in the late 1950s. The first version, which follows the novel very closely, was done in black and white by the noted director, Peter Brook in 1963. The second version was done in color by Harry Hook and released in 1990.

Like many remakes in the same language, one immediately wonders why bother, as the original Brook version is more than gripping enough to convey the message of the novel.

To highlight the differences between the two versions, let me outline the story shared by the two versions.

The scene is set when an airplane carrying school children crashes in the South Pacific, of the coast of a remote tropical island. Approximately 30 of the children, ages 6 to 13 make it to shore and gather on the beach to work out how they are to survive and assume that since they are far removed from their original destination and the island is small and uninhabited, there is a good chance it will take a long time, if ever, for grown-ups to find and rescue them. The first two principle characters are Ralph, one of the two or three oldest boys who we meet first, in the company of an intelligent, bespectacled, slightly overweight boy of the same age known as `Piggy’. The third main character is Jack, about as old and as fit as Ralph. Three minor named characters are Simon, who is prone to fainting and `seeing things’ and Sam and Eric, a pair of twins.

An early vote sets up Ralph as the leader, with a few rules establishing a conch shell found by Ralph and Piggy in the first reel as the symbol of the right to speak to the gathering of boys. Jack immediately assumes the responsibility as leader of a `gang’ (later to become a `tribe’) of hunters who will also take responsibility for maintaining a signal fire which Ralph succeeds in lighting by using Piggy’s eyeglass lens as a means of concentrating sunlight on a clump of tinder.

Jack’s gang gets involved too much in hunting and allows the signal fire to go out just as an aircraft flies near the island. Soon, a story evolves about the presence of a monster on the island. This creates the pretext for Jack to split off from the group with his tribe and create a camp at a more defensible location. As this larger group becomes more and more primitive, they raid Ralph’s camp and steal Piggy’s specs since it is the only means they have for starting fires. To placate the monster, the head of a killed wild pig is cut from its carcass and stood on the top of a pole near the suspected monster’s lair as an offering to the monster.

After a few days, Simon observes this pig’s head and its very large collection of flies feasting on the festering flesh and imagines he hears the pigs head speak to him, hence, the source of the title. Simon is then killed when the hunters mistake him in the night for the monster.

When Ralph and Piggy walk to Jack’s camp to recover Piggy’s specs, Piggy is killed by another `accident’ when Jack’s tribe members pry a large boulder loose that falls on Piggy. Ralph and Jack fight, Ralph is driven off, and the whole tribe sets fire to the jungle to flush out Ralph and, presumably, kill him. Both stories end as Ralph runs to the beach to find himself at the feet of a very professionally uniformed member of his country’s elite armed services.

Hook spices up the dialogue by making the boys much more hip with lots of swear words and references to contemporary popular shows such as Alf and Miss Piggy of the Muppets. Unfortunately, Hook loses the two most important elements of the whole story. In the beginning of the novel and, subtly, in the beginning of Brook’s film, we see that the world is once more at war and the boys from several different schools are on a plane to Australia to find relative safety from the coming (nuclear?) conflict. Hook shows nothing of this, giving us simply a group of boys from the same military academy on a trip to goodness knows where. This totally looses the whole allegorical sense of the story where the conflict between the boys mirrors the war in the world at large, especially the sense of the last scene where the world (island) is destroyed by the conflict (fire).

The second major oversight in Hook’s rendition is that there is never enough attention given to the significance of the pig’s head, Simon’s vision, and the sense of `The Lord of the Flies’. A less important point is that the origin of the monster myth is different in the two movies. Brook’s film follows the book and has it be a misinterpretation of a billowing parachute from a fallen, dead pilot. Hook creates the myth out of the spasms of the downed plane’s delirious pilot as he finds refuge in a cave and is rediscovered by Simon who believes he is a monster.

Both movies do a credible job of depicting the fall of nominally civilized boys into savagery and myth. The combat between Ralph and Jack near the end is straight out of Frazier’s `The Golden Bough’ on the myth of killing the king. Unfortunately, Hook’s version seems as eviscerated as the pig carcass, as all the great allegorical of the original story are totally lost. And, as minimal as they were, I even think the boys’ performances in Brook’s version are better done, as their initial innocence in the face of this loss of civilization makes their transformation all the more interesting.

Brook’s version is highly recommended.

It was a pleasure to see the original version of “Lord of the Flies” again. I’ll be interested in seeing the DVD version as well, to see what additional material comes in that format. Having been one of the boys in the movie, I also appreciated seeing the reviews posted by other Amazon customers! I wonder if any of the other cast members have checked out this site…

I confess to liking the original version far more than the remake, but that’s not surprising, I guess. I TRIED to keep an open mind when I saw the new version, but, alas, I failed. My recollections of running from the burning jungle, coughing, onto the beach at the end makes a black-and-white rendition seem more real to me.

I remember seeing this movie the first time on HBO when i was 9.. I loved it instantly, a girl receiving powers on her 16th birthday, which turns her life around and makes the best of it by getting popular, getting the guy of her dreams and doing what ever she wants, what more would she want. I wanted to be her. but then when i grew older seeing it again now at 23. She was happy only for a period of time, she wants the guy to love her for who she is and not her popularity and looks. I thought she was crazy to give up her powers. She should’ve kept em and let the spell wear off the guy of her dreams.

I sure enjoy watching this movie once in awhile, it’s fun to watch, never get bored of it

If you like cheesy 80s’ films, this is the one to watch! and it’s one, if you are like me, that you can watch multiple times. It’s the story of Louise Miller, a 15(about to be 16) year old girl who is a witch. She uses her power to become popular, and get the guy she wants, who bares a striking resemblence to Tom Cruise. Louise realizes later that she wants the guy to like her for herself and not the popularity part of the whole thing. IT’s a great film for teenagers, kids, anyone! Even 30 year old women(like me) still enjoy it. I saw this movie a year or two after it as released. There is a lot of cheesy music, and a weird girl’s gym scene where they dance around to a song called, “I LIKE BOYS!” it’s ultimate cheese.but it’s a cute story with a good moral. I also think that Robyn Lively is one of the best young actresses around. Watch this movie if u want to have fun!

Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl is already engaged to another. Boy chases girl across the world to try to woo her. Girl loves boy. They live happily ever after. That’s the first 30 minutes of this movie. And if you’ve ever seen a Bollywood movie before, you know there’s at least 2 and 1/2 hours left. So what do they fill it up with? Bickering. Mindless arguing that continues through nearly every minute of the movie. The movie was fine the first time through… though with all that fighting 3 hours seemed like 3 years…. but I’ll probably never watch this one again. On my list of Great, Good, and Terrible Bollywood movies this is on the low end of Good. But it was good to see both Shah Rukh Khan and Rani again. They’re wonderful!

The main reason I love this film is Shahrukh Khan and Rani Mukerji. My favorite actor and favorite actor costarring in a movie together.

Another reason is the soundtrack and dance numbers. I heard it before I bought the movie and it really made me want to see Chalte Chalte.

The other reason? It’s not a typical movie. Typical movies follow the formula of boy meets girl, boy likes girl, boy loses girl, boy finds girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl get married, the end.

Chalte Chalte went beyond that. While I love many Bollywood films that follow the standard forumla, I’m quite happy that Chalte Chalte went forward to a year later when the honeymoon period is over and reality sets in.

Clone High has a very original concept; back in the 1980s, secret government agents dug up some of the most famous and influential historical figures and cloned them. The clones were put in the care of foster homes, and are being secretly monitered by the government. By now, they are in high school, and are attending Clone High High School, where Principal Cinnamon J. Scudworth (Phil Lord) can keep his eye on them. Scudworth is employed by the Board of Shadowy Figures, the government group responsible for the clones, but he secretly plans to steal the clones away from the government for his own purposes. Scudworth is a stereotypical mad scientist; he is completely insane, speaks in an overly dramatic manner, and even built a robotic butler named Mr. Butlertron (Chris Miller).

The main clones are Abe Lincoln (Will Forte), a nice guy who is very indecisive, Joan of Arc (Nicole Sullivan), a goth girl with a crush on Abe, Ghandi (Michael McDonald), Abe’s best friend and party animal (he buckled under the pressure of living up to the original Ghandi), Cleopatra (Christa Miller), a sexy, self-absorbed rich girl, and JFK (Chris Miller), a loud, obnoxious, partier who is Lincoln’s rival for Cleopatra’s heart. Some other clones include George Washington Carver (Donald Faison), a science nerd obsessed with peanuts, Thomas Edison, an AV nerd, Ponce de Leon (Luke Perry), a Fonzie-esque guy who likes to litter, Vincent van Gogh (Andy Dick), a depressed art student (if you’ve seen Wedding Crashers, think Todd), and Buddy Holly (Neil Flynn), an aviator with an unsafe plane. In addition to the numerous clones, there are many original characters such as Toots (Donald Faison), Joan of Arc’s blind foster parent, Wally and Carl (Faison, Flynn), JFK’s gay foster dads, Abe’s Foster Dad (Joe Flarhety), who is kind of a knock on Flarhety’s character in Freaks and Geeks, Mr. Sheepman (Andy Dick), a history teacher and the first mostly human clone, and Glenn the Janitor (Flynn), who is Ponce’s foster dad and a direct parody of Flynn’s Janitor character on Scrubs (Glenn is the exact opposite of the Janitor on Scrubs, but Scudworth still hates him).

The episodes wonderfully poke fun of the teenage drama genre. The episodes all deal with bizarre “issues”, such as smoking raisins to get high, corporate sponsorship, the ADD epidemic, religious tolerance, incarceration, and the death of a friend. In fact, every episode begins with “Tonight, on a very special Clone High”, and every episode has a “Previously” segment and a “On the next…” segment, neither of which are necessary, because the show isn’t (for the most part) serialized. Futhermore, the relationship structure is similar to that of most popular teen dramas; the male protagonist (Abe) likes the sexy girl (Cleo) who is dating a jerk (JFK), while his best female friend (Joan) pines for him. Meanwhile, Abe’s best male friend (Ghandi), is always trying to score with the girls, though he usually ends in failure. The animation is somewhat crude, though I think that it is (1) part of the show’s charm, and (2) another way to poke fun at generic teen shows. I think that the cheap animation is supposed to make us think that this was a kind of quick imitation.

A lot of the humor on the show derives from the fact that so many of the clones are nothing like the originals. Abe is indecisive, JFK is not a good leader, Ghandi is a party animal, Ghengis Khan is mentally challenged, and Nostradamus is a terrible psychic. Of course, there are numerous other kinds of jokes, ranging from current events references (such as the extreme marketing), great guest stars (including Marilyn Manson, Jack Black, John Stamos, and Mandy Moore), and parodies of classic cartoons, such as when Scudworth engaged in a Roadrunner/Wile E. Coyote scenario with a skunk. Also, a lot of the humor is similar to that found on the show Scrubs, which makes sense because Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence is one of the creators of Clone High. And with the exception of Judy Reyes and Ken Jenkins, all of the Scrubs regulars did voices in this show. Also, a lot of guest stars on Scrubs also appeared in this show, sometimes as regulars (Nicole Sullivan, who does the voice of Joan of Arc, had a somewhat recurring role on Scrubs).

Sadly, Clone High was cancelled after only one season. There was so much more they could have done, and so much humor to be had with yet-to-be introduced clones. It’s sad that we’ll never get to see the exploits of Abe and Ghadi or hear Mr. Butlertron call anyone Wesley again, but oh well. The show ended in a “cliff-hanger” which further parodied the teen drama. It’s actually a pretty fitting ending for the type of show that Clone High is. Who knows, maybe someday we’ll get a movie, similar to Firefly, but for now, enjoy these 13 episodes.

I’ve waited for three years for this show to be released on DVD. In that time I’ve had to make do with the complete series downloaded on my computer. But now that I have this set, I couldn’t be happier.

You may have read how annoying some reviewers find the the 90-second Teletoon commercial introduction to be. Personally, I don’t mind it since it shows scenes from some of my favorite cartoons - Family Guy, Futurama, etc. Nonetheless, you can’t skip past it (at least on my Sony DVD players) - but it’s not that bad.

What blew me away was the incredible transfer quality. I could not believe how sharp and colorful the show looked. Excellent job with the print, as the image quality looked just like that found on the Simpsons, South Park, Futurama, Family Guy volumes. In addition, I could not believe how great the audio sounded. Absolutely no noise.

Regarding the audio, I was so pleased to see that all of the songs that originally aired are on this set. Clone High has such an incredible selection of songs that I was pleased to see that they were retained. Dashboard Confessional, The Get Up Kids, Saves the Day, Taking Back Sunday, Hot Rod Circuit, The Anniversary, Alkaline Trio - this show is an emo-lovers dream! Also, it’s worth addressing the longer intro song. Having read about this change, I was prepared to hear it at the beginning of each episode - but I didn’t realize how much I’d miss the piano version on Episode 10. Clone High has such a great theme song, and I missed this variation. However, a quick search on the internet will show that numerous sites have an mp3 of this song.

Overall, this was an excellent packaging. I did miss not having any liner notes or some sort of insert in the DVD case - just think how great it would have been to include a retrospective, sketches, etc. Oh well. I don’t think anything short of a second season will ever satisfy Clone High fans - but I think this release is pretty great.

After having visited so many national parks in the US, I start to get interested in the making and shaping of these fantastic landscapes, which is the reason I bought this DVD.

The best thing when I watch this DVD is that I’ve been to most of the places shown in this film, including Mt Rainier, Mt St Helens, Yosemite, Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Olympic, Grand Canyon……. When it explains the geological terms or activities such as subduction, mantle, crust, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes and glaciers, I can comprehend them in an enjoyable way. Everything is vivid to me.

In my opinion, geology is best studied when you have some field experience. If you are a national park lover just like me, you will enjoy the knowledge this film brings to you.

I bought this video to show to my 8th grade science class. It is very informative and covers a vast array of topics that relate to our curriculum, but the delivery is very dry. The narrator speaks almost in monotone. It is full of great information that will benefit the students if they could stay focused. I was told by many students “Miss, this is soooo boring!”.

I noticed the 440+ reviews here are for the film - not the Blu so I at least wanted to answer some common questions about this cut.

The director’s cut is 111 minutes with the already mentioned changes listed here and everywhere - including the removal of the beginning narration, more character development scenes, etc. The transfer looks phenomenal (compared to how I saw it prior - even upscaled). I played the title on both a Panasonic plasma and a Bravia via a 80 GB PS3 and Sony BDP301. I paused the film in over 34 spots of action, dark contrasts, bright colorings and various hue changes. Virtually every frame looked excellent, especially the scenes with Jennifer Connelly singing; the majority of the colorings were in her scenes until those last beach sequences.

The special features are the same between the DVD and Blu with the exception of one of the commentaries. The 7.1 DTS HD sound was enjoyable, even though two of the channels were primarily used in the large machine sequences only.

A worthwhile Blu addition and I did not see too many failings in the grain reduction/transfer issues I had read about.

The trailers for Dark City suggested a film so complex and impeneterable to leave the viewer rather confused at its conclusion, yet in execution the film makes far more sense than the intriguing montage in the trailer.

Set in a dark world–literally dark, as no one seems to remember being out during the day–the film focuses on John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell), a man who awakens amnesiac to find a murdered woman nearby. Soon thereafter pursued by the police (led by William Hurt), he must solve the mystery of his missing memories and eerie pursuers.

Helped along the way by a woman claiming to be his wife (Jennifer Connelley) and a pendactic psychiatrist (Kiefer Sutherland), Murdoch learns that his pursuers are a race of aliens with the power to warp reality with their minds who continually change the city and the memories and even lives of the people inhabiting it in an experiment designed to save their lives. Murdoch has developed their same power to “tune” and save humanity from the aliens’ machinations.

The film’s theme of questionable reality–carried across on two levels as both human memories are manipulated and the physical world itself changed on a nightly basis–is done fairly well if somewhat less successfully than the in the Matrix.

Replete with dark imagery suiting the film noir genre and quite at home in Blade Runner, the movie makes for a stunning visual performance. The aliens are masterfully done as frightening and eerie outsiders. My only complaint is that I was able to grasp the film’s actions and meanings on a first viewing with little difficulty; I had expected to come out with the sense of, “What the heck?!” that would require two or three viewings to fully digest the film’s depth. Yet that aside, the film is still a definite watch for any fans of film noir or reality-questioning sci-fi.

The DVD includes a number of special features to sweeten the deal, including two commentary tracks, the theatrical trailer (whose music unfortunately didn’t make it into the film), an isolated score track, and more. The video and audio transfers are crisp and clean.

Watching this DVD allowed me to have a greater insite into the bible. I was interested from the beginning to the end of this series and actually wished there was more. Bruce Feiler’s presentation of people, places, and events during these periods in the bible gave me good understanding and clarity, it took me on a journey that was very meaningful on several different levels. I would recommend this DVD to those who are not only interest in the religious journey but those who are interested in archeology, geology, ancient architecture, ancient cultures, modern people, a Greek Orthodox chuch, etc. No disappointments here……………… Frankly, I am waiting for the next journey to begin.

I love the approach taken on this. It is not so much an attempt to either prove or disprove the events of the bible, but an attempt to put a “face” (as it were) to some of the locations in the Bible. I don’t so much see this as the work done by a skeptic, but by someone who truly wants to understand the whys and hows of the events. If that means ice-caps melted to create the flood, does it necessarily follow that he is skeptical of God? I mean, SOMEONE had to cause the ice-caps to melt, didn’t they? As I see it, here is someone who maybe fell out of love with their religion and is trying to understand and renew their faith. At the very least, this is a visually stunning look at the areas of the Middle East that are where the bible was originally written. It is a very fascinating watch.

In a world of adults Anime that is populated with allot of extreme Hentai content, it is nice to go with a nice change and watch a adult’s Anime that has not got any of the extreme Hentai content in it.

But it still does NOT make this anything for the kiddies as the storyline and the scenes still have allot of adult content, but it is just not as extreme as the hentai that Jap-animation is well known for in it’s adult market.

Step up Love Story tells a story of a married couple who’s married life starts out awkward but then snowballs into what is a life changing event in their lives.

While there is sex, and lots of it, it never goes too far for those who are sensitive to the explicit nature that some other Anime for Adults go.

Also for any Otaku couple who would love to watch an Anime for adults that also explores married life, then I would give this one a good recogmendation.

I think the seller should have given a more detailed rating such as this film being soft core and not having any explicit sex scenes. The story seems to start out very sensual and misleads the veiwer the women are drawn very sensual but there is no hardcore sex.

1- Assume the new three films (SW, Empire, Jedi), do NOT change the account at all…don’t add in novel footage, chop ragged footage, change any sage elements…don’t create Greedo shoot first, Luke cry, Yoda dress in straggle, Threepio with a gold metal boner, Jawas dancing around a campfire as they cook s’mores, Wampa enhancements, CGI-ing a Colt-45 bottle into Lando’s hand, putting Jabba’s pudgy sister in the same sexy outfit as Slave Leia, or ANYTHING other than what folks actually saw in the theatres the first time the films were released…

2- Grasp as clean-image print of the fresh films you can gain and transfer it over to 1080P.

3- Pick the sound and adjust it over to as high-def a format as you can without adding anything modern, altering anything, etc, unprejudiced mix it to sound as capable as your studios can possibly acquire it to sound in my home theatre…ah ah ah…George…I examine you starting to add unique Ewok songs…terminate legal there and impartial do as I say…

4- Now add an extra disk in each package for bonus features such as “making of” documentary, director and actor’s commentary, special effects features, and all the other material we occupy on dvds from bootleggers at Comic-Con because you don’t release them officially…

5- Release them NOW…not when my mammoth grandchildren are having ample grandchildren…I know you concept to release a different variation of the novel Star Wars trilogy every 2 years and Composed never want to give the fans what they actually want (peer #1-4 above), and thought to employ your special effects team to turn your aging human body into a cyborg-hybrid-clone so you can live for 200 years or more all while you pull the same cruel tease to your fans every 2 years…but objective this once George…Fair…THIS…ONCE…choose your fist from my rectum (is my prostate okay? ), and do the fair thing…give the fans the ONE version of the trilogy that they want to assume…

…and if you do this for us, we’ll execute our plans for the geek-raid on Skywalker Ranch in Star Wars costumes that we have planned…and we’re not going to bathe before the raid George…unbiased imagine…500,000 pimple-faced-overweight-unbathed nerds walking around your property in stormtrooper armor and ewok suits…it’ll be impartial like Comic-Con…

So please do the accurate thing for us objective this once George…the fans will thank you, Amazon will thank you, and in one fell swoop, you’ll be helping the nation’s sagging economy with a sudden massive influx of consumer cash that will suddenly be spent…Obama will thank you too…
