Eyes are the source of visual perception though which most people conceive the world and all of its wonders. A moment where two pair of eyes accumulate one another and there is a spark of mutual interest could lead to further emotional investment. This mutual interest is most frequently triggered through the visual experience, which catches something that fascinates the individual. The fascination rapid releases a accelerate of hormones as the visual contact continues and intensifies the emotional sensation through out the whole body. Occasionally, there are physical manifestations revealed through butterflies in the stomach and uneasy feelings that could cause sweatiness and involuntary stuttering. This is a well-liked phenomenon, which most people undergo at least once in a lifetime, known as falling in cherish.

The moment of falling in admire can be overwhelmingly passionate, as the affected could drift into oblivion with muffled conception and reasoning. This kind of treasure could be damaging to the person, even painful to those reach and dear. Casque d’Or opens with such a consuming moment where the two main characters, Marie and Manda, view at one another unaware of their future predicaments. The title, Casque d’Or, refers to Marie (Simone Signoret) golden hair, which serves a symbolic meaning through the hypnotic effects it appears to have on men. Manda (Serge Reggiani) seems to be under its spell, as he passionately stares at Marie.

The carpenter Georges Manda’s luck, or maybe more rightfully difficulty, began when he accidentally bumped into his obsolete jail friend, Raymond. Through Raymond’s acquaintances and criminal friends he meets Marie (Simone Signoret) who currently is together with Roland (William Sabatier) . Terrible omens surround the initial meeting between Marie and Manda, as Marie’s jealous boyfriend is ready to turn to violence in order to extinguish to Marie’s infatuation.

Roland’s boss, Felix Leca (Claude Dauphin), shows his interest in the appreciate quarrel, as he openly expresses his trouble for Roland, but internally has an alternative motive to why he wants to support Roland. Felix displays his absorb interest to Marie and requests that she acknowledge to him later that evening after having concept about it. In the evening Manda appears to sigh his savor for Marie while Roland’s jealousy flares out as he suggests that they should go outside to solve their mutual jam. Felix lurks in the social shadow as the two men go out in the backyard to fight for Marie, and he appears the instant before the fight in order to keep his dubious plans into action.

In the 1950’s most films coming out of Hollywood were heavily influenced by guidelines of what was morally acceptable to depict. This is mighty due to the injure that the Catholic Legion of Decency accomplished in the 1930s, as the religious organization began to influence the creative process of filmmaking through their upright stipulations. Casque d’Or does not demonstrate these stipulations as the record dwells on the nitty-gritty of a like affair amidst criminal elements in Paris. Jacques Becker’s memoir does not glorify or bottle up the darkness in human nature. He simply illustrates the actions of a group of characters in a specific social environment during the turn of the century. It does not turn into a period film, which he also tried to avoid. Instead Becker depicts a doomed couple hoping for a better time and status, as they are aware of their difficult status.

In a historical perspective Casque d’Or is a masterpiece. François Truffaut and other directors concept it had a stout accomplish on the French Original Wave some years later. This is humorous to ponder, as the film was at first received with very runt praise in France while the Brits idea it was one of the best films of the year. Today an audience can detached rejoice in the triumph that the film offers to its viewers from the beginning to the waste, as the raze offers something grand darker than expected.

Casque D’Or may buy a cramped while to obtain into, with the first half hour being largely milieu and set-up, but once the state kicks in it’s compelling. Seen today it seems obvious to have been one of Scorsese’s influences in Gangs of Unusual York, not least because Jacques Becker takes the standard period costume drama setting and then plays a down-and-dirty movie that pays no attention to the niceties you’re expecting: these characters really are crude lives. The knife-fight is tough stuff, and its aftermath beautifully staged, and the finale has loyal emotional power - not least the shots of Serge Reggiani’s almost-dead waltz with Smone Signoret that in a more ‘modern’ (1940-50s) setting would have pegged out his fate from the moment he met her. Having only seen Signoret in her later haggard roles, it was also a surprise to view unbiased how colorful she was in her youth. Impressive stuff.

James Garner turns in a great performance in this pair of western spoofs, although not related to his popular Maverick role both films are similar in their comic style and Garner is just as crafty as his Bret Maverick character. In Support Your Local Sheriff, Garner is a slick drifter who accepts the job of sheriff in a small Colorado town and uses his wits and quick draw to clean up the town and win the heart of a beautiful yet clumsy lady. In Support Your Local Gunfighter, Garner is a kept man with a bad habit of losing money to the roulette wheel. He then uses another drifter to pretend to be a famous gunfighter in a scheme to make some quick money. Yet when the real gunfighter shows up it is up to Garner to save the day. The two films are quite similar and are companion films with many of the same actors and a similar plot involving a sly stranger who is able to win over the town and a lovely lady with his charm and ability to out think his opponent. I bought this combo pack for a great price; both films are very funny and are classic western spoofs along the lines of Blazing Saddles only G Rated. A great buy for any fan of James Garner or Westerns in general. Just make sure you get both films in this neat combo and save a few bucks while your at it.

These two films are as good as it gets when it comes to comedy westerns. The only problem is the colors on Support Your Local Sheriff are somewhat faded and too red. The print is clear without any scratches or other defects. It’s just that the colors haven’t aged well. I watched it on several sources so it isn’t just the color being off on a particular TV. I still found it quite watchable. It was at most a minor annoyance.

This movie is a perfect example of how a film can be made beautifully effective without having to resort to raw sex, constant violence, or complicated plots. It is the simple but charming story of two poor children, a brother and a sister, who must share one pair of shoes because the brother, during his walk home from the shoe repair loses his sister’s shoes. The loss of the shoes brings on all the difficulties with which they must now cope. The film tenderly shows how they strive toward resolution of their problem. The dialogue is kept minimal, and yet the director has achieved a very solid tension that keeps your eyes glued to the screen from the opening frames till the very end. This film beautifully shows a world of which most Westerners are completley unaware, a world that is so different from our own. The bulk of the film is carried very capably, on the shoulders of two small, young children, and they do a totally magnificant job of making you believe this very lovely, charming, and worthy film. This is the stuff for which Oscars are made.

This 1997 film is from Iran. And it’s the kind of film that the whole family can enjoy. It’s about a 9-year old boy who loses his 7-year old sister’s shoes through no fault of his own. They are very poor and they both want to keep it a secret from their parents. And so they share his only pair of worn-out sneakers. She wears them to school in the morning, and then runs through the streets, gives him the shoes and he wears them in the afternoon. Such a plan is not without its challenges, however. She almost loses a shoe when it falls into a gutter. He’s late for school. The shoes are worn. Both of them crave a pair of their own.

Amir Farrokh Hasherman is cast as the boy. He has the biggest, most expressive eyes I’ve ever seen and my heart immediately went out to him. Bahare Seddiqi is the little sister. She wears a long dress and a white head covering just like all the other little girls. It’s their shoes that show their individuality and she is always looking at all the other little girl’s feet. One day she sees a little girl wearing her own lost shoes, but the other little girl is the daughter of a blind beggar. Later, there is a footrace announced in the little boy’s school. He finds out that if he wins third prize he can get a new pair of sneakers. The tension mounts.

One of the best things about this film is that it brought me into another culture. This is not about revolution and bombs and sadness. This is just a simple story about the love between a brother and sister. It transcends all cultures, and makes the audience see the humanity of the children. There’s one scene where they clean the shoes and blow great big soap bubbles at each other. It certainly is heartwarming. I just wanted to give these children a great big hug.

This is a beautiful film. I highly recommend it.

It can be argued that this collection of 9 animated shorts based on the world of The Matrix was as anticipated as Reloaded. I, for one, was incredibly intrigued just by the concept. I asked myself “could any movie actually pull this off?” The Animatrix answers my question. The world that The Wachowski Brothers have created truly is the Star Wars of this generation. It is a cutural phenomena, and the quality of the 9 shorts that comprise The Animatrix show the impact of The Matrix. Here’s a review of each short:

1) Final Flight Of the Osiris-This is the only short film to be done in 3-D. It was done, in fact, by the team behind the 3-D movie Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. It looks great and incredibly realistic. The story directly relates to the events in Reloaded. A great way to kick off this collection because it is the most familiar in style and feel.

2 & 3) The Second Renaissance-This two-parter tells the story of how man and machine came to fight against each other. Probably my favorite of all the shorts story-wise, because it gave me chills and also made me think way too much about the possibilities it presents. Be warned, this is probably the most violent of all the short films here.

4) Kid’s Story-Another story that directly relates to something alluded to in Reloaded. Remember the annoying kid Neo encountered in Zion who always followed him everywhere? This is your chance to see what that was really about.

5) Program-This short deals with the training process people who have been freed must go through. It has absoutely breathtaking animation, and is the most “anime” of the 9.

6) World Record-This story shows the possibilities of being “plugged-in.” Think that the only way someone can be freed is by taking the red pill? Watch this. The most interesting and inventive story as far as I’m concerned, coupled with a unique style of animation.

7) Beyond-This short deals with how the machines handled glitches in the system. It has gorgeous animation, with bright colors and a thoroughly Japanese look.

8) A Detective Story-Remember Trinity’s legendary hacker status, alluded to in the first movie? This is the whole story. This one has a very unique style that I think fit the feel of the story well, and it’s nice to see Trinity when she was still the baddest hacker on the block.

9) Matriculated-Can the machines be convinced to join the human side? After all, if humans were batteries and if machines have A.I., doesn’t that make both man and machine connected in some way? This last short, with the best-looking animation out of the 9, answers those questions. Just as The Second Renaissance will make you feel for man, this one will make you feel for the other side.

Overall, I’d say The Animatrix succeeded what it set out to do. This was never meant to be enjoyed on the same level as the movies, it was meant to give everyone a further understanding of what The Matrix is and provide a more detailed backstory to complement the movies. It is great to see how the animators do sometimes recreate such effects as bullet-time. It comes very very close to being as dazzling and visually stunning as the movies themselves. The stories are a little sad, but they also kind of have to be. The root of why The Matrix is so popular is because there is nothing as painful for humans to watch than well, ourselves. The Matrix is spectacular and impossible, and at the same time the emotional impact of these 9 shorts, as well as the movies, is what really keeps the audience watching.

As for the DVD itself, the menus are at once cool and a little bit overdone (navigating them can be a little weird the first time you pop it into your DVD player). There are few extras but nothing fancy, although the commentaries included on The Second Renaissance 1 and 2, Program, Beyond from the creators offer insight into the stories as well as the conceptual process (don’t worry they are subtitled in English).

Overall, if you are a fan of the movie, or of animation, you owe it to yourself to check The Animatrix out. The stories are great, the animation is both varied and beautiful, and the whole thing is, quite simply, cool. In a word: whoa.

Okay, so this is a nice addition to the Matrix canon, and does give us a lot of back story to the events that happen in the live action films.

The stories are mostly entertaining, though a couple are as gruesome and troubling as possible. If you are not the kind of person that enjoys bodies being mutilated and people being killed cruelly by robots, this might not be for you. Also, if you don’t like the Matrix films, this is not for you. In fact, why are you even reading this?

The animation is great, the sound is excellent, and overall the dvd is worthwhile. If you enjoy really wild animation and special effects, you will certainly like this.

HOWEVER - just because this is animated does NOT mean that this is child appropriate. It is not. It is completely inappropriate (IMO) for children under the age of 12. It is very violent and contains images that are FAR too incomprehensible for young children, not to mention R rated language. Fine for adults and teenagers old enough to know the difference between reality and movies, simply not appropriate for children.

Imagine a show that every critic on the planet loves. Imagine a show so deeply layered that it makes every other drama seem simple. Imagine a show where each character is equally important. Imagine a show so complex that you will always discover something new the next time around.

Doesn’t this sound like perfection to you? Trust me, it is, in more ways than you can fathom.

THE WIRE is a show so meticulously crafted and executed that it would take me a dozen reviews to scratch the surface of what makes it great. After catching the very first episode on HBO, I immediately bought the 1st season. The rest, as they say, is history.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Wire: The Complete Series! Click Here

I’m so afraid to ruin anything that I don’t even want to give away characters’ names. To even let you go in expecting certain traits from a character would spoil the fun. So instead, I’m deliberately being vague about what occurs. If you’ve never heard about this series, you deserve go in cold.

But I’ll give you a few details, starting with the very first scene. THE WIRE begins when a detective is questioning a young hoodlum who witnessed a murder. The detective asks why the guy and his friends allowed the victim to continue rolling dice, after he’d been known to snatch the money & run. The scene closes when the kid says, “Got to, man. This America.”

Then the show begins its title sequence, in which The Blind Boys of Alabama’s cover of “Way Down In The Hole” plays over a montage of seemingly random clips of police activity & urban life. But as you’ll learn the more you see this title sequence (and song), this montage is actually filled with clues, both literal and metaphorical. The greatest crime dramas throw clues in your face without telling you how important they are. Believe me, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, one of the greatest films of all time with its labyrinthine plot, has nothing on THE WIRE. And we’re only just getting started.

What you’ll also notice from the opening scene is the dialogue. It actually took me two viewings to find out what the detective and the dice-roller were saying. As if that wasn’t enough, I eventually had to turn on the English subtitles just to find out what each character was saying. The dialogue flows so naturally that THE WIRE never feels like a TV drama. There are no scenes where the characters recap what happened in the previous episode, unless the characters would actually take a moment to remind each other. This sounds like a challenge, and indeed it is. THE WIRE requires (and deserves) your undivided attention. Pause if you have to. Rewind if you have to. Use the subtitles if you have to. Many have called THE WIRE “a visual novel”, and they couldn’t be more right. You see how much attention I’ve given to just the first few minutes? Guess what, the entire series clocks in at 63 hours.

So, what’s the premise of the series? The first season’s main story begins when a team of Baltimore police is assembled to take down one of the city’s high-profile drug dealers. The investigators and surveillance teams endure what real cops would endure: long hours, cold trails, bad weather, tedious paperwork, crummy offices, and worse…smart criminals. THE WIRE gives the justice officers an equal amount of screen time as the targets they pursue. The dealers aren’t delightfully vicious or glamorous in the least. Sort of like the Corleone Family or the protagonists in GOODFELLAS, THE WIRE portrays its criminals as guys who either can’t do anything else for a living, or refuse to do anything else for a living. The series goes even deeper, as we’re engaged in the lives of judges & lawyers, homicide detectives & their office-dwelling superiors, drug kingpins & their corner workers, and even the homeless. Calling this “epic” is an understatement. If you’re as interested in the urban drama as you are in the police procedural, then you’re on the right track. Don’t worry, you will get to see the cops bust a few doors and arrest a few thugs, but just be aware each event it treated as ordinarily and naturally as anything else in THE WIRE. To the characters, these events are just another day.

Now bear in mind, I’ve only given a little info on the first season! I won’t give away any details, but Season Two continues in the exact opposite way you’d expect a sequel to. The cops and criminals shared equal halves of TV time on Season One, but for the seasons that follow, they share equal parts with a completely new side of Baltimore. Just wait until THE WIRE continues through its next few seasons, it gets even more deliciously complex. If you think Season One sounds like a beastly Rubik’s Cube, wait until you get a load of Season Two, not to mention the seasons afterwards. After all, you can’t predict how a single story is going to proceed if you’re too blindsided by how it begins. One of the most interesting aspects is that slowly over time, THE WIRE becomes more than a crime drama — the series evolves into a multi-layered epic, where crime is only part of the picture. Each of the five seasons feels like its own individual story, but naturally connects with the season that comes before and after it.

I don’t want you to be discouraged by this onslaught of convoluted storytelling. There is a method to the madness. Audiences (including me) are too used to knowing where we are at every given point of the story. THE WIRE purposefully refrains from the kind of clarity we’re used to. This challenge that will stimulate your mind in ways that no other TV show has. In so many ways, it’s the kind of entertainment we’ve always wanted: Surprising yet Natural — isn’t that always the goal?

THE WIRE is so great that everyone is going to take something different from it. This show can be interpreted in a million ways. Nobody is right, and nobody is wrong. How can that be? Well, creator David Simon is to be credited for this neutrality. Simon is as hands-on as any other TV series producer, writer, or creator. Every single aspect of the show is exactly what he wanted it to be. THE WIRE was never the victim of a writer’s strike, or cancelled seasons, or poor broadcasting schedules, or any other excuse. If there is a character or story arc you don’t care for, it isn’t Simon’s fault; your personal taste just doesn’t mesh with it. Sure, I have one or two nitpicks about what THE WIRE should’ve been in my eyes, but not once did I believe it was for a lack of focus. For example, one particular season takes a more didactic approach to the series. We witness moral dilemmas with an ambitious mayor, unethical cops, and newspaper staff — all tackle the immortal question, “Do the ends justify the means?” This more black-and-white angle is exactly what David Simon wanted to use. I preferred a more gray-shaded tale, but Simon decided that this tale needed a more direct statement. Now, even though this isn’t my preference, I overlooked my own criticisms because this season was built this way. There are a couple of other little things that might not sit well with some viewers, notably how the “star” of the show’s cast disappears for most of one season (don’t worry, you’ll know it’s coming before it happens). The point is that THE WIRE never once strayed from its intended path.

I think that’s what I’m going to take away most from this show: It tells every story it wants to tell. It answers every question it poses, unless we’re meant to ponder. It forces us to sympathize with those we’d normally condemn, and to relate to those we’d usually ignore. This television drama is a masterful work of art, from the page to the screen.

I’m going to close with this:

Despite my review title, spending a large amount of money on a complete TV series without seeing a few clips is clearly irresponsible. I didn’t type this review expecting you to drop a couple hundred by my words alone. So, let’s be sensible about this product. If you can, rent the first few episodes from a videostore, or try to find the show in a library, or maybe even go on YouTube to find a few Season One scenes.

There is so much more I want to share with you, but it’s time to use a lesson David Simon taught me:

I will say only enough, and make it your responsibility to discover the rest. Enjoy!

On the basis of previous reviews, you’d never know that this series was on the verge of being cancelled at least twice, that it never made satisfactory numbers for HBO, or that it was almost universally ignored by award committees despite it’s fervid following.

There’s a number of things for the faint-hearted or first time viewers to know about The Wire before you jump in:

1. There is no denouement, no simple, clear resolution at the end of every episode ala CSI, NCIS, or any other typical police drama. On the contrary, The Wire is the epitome of the “slow build”, it takes episodes to get started, much less finished. As in life, there are rarely any easy, clear resolutions at the end. Unlike the black and white worlds of network tv, The Wire is all gray.

2. There is not a simple, single story line. Rather The Wire is characterized by complex, multiple story arcs that can extend over more than one season. It demands (and rewards) concentration, rather than escape. Redemption and revenge are possible, but not in one episode or one season. The Wire requires patience.

3. There are no clear cut heroes and villains (this is the anti-”Heroes” tv show.) There are only human beings, all flawed. McNulty, a hero, is an alcoholic who cheats on his wife. Even Marlowe, the apparently soulless villain, grapples with very human issues of loyalty and pride.

4. Though there are great, fully realized characters (almost too many for escapist viewers to follow), and though to some degree Baltimore, the city, is a central character, the abiding presences in The Wire are Baltimore’s institutions and organizations: courts, city government, educational system, labor unions, police, newspapers. Even gangs are seen as just another organization. Unlike any other show I’ve ever seen, The Wire demonstrates how institutions are built from a complex web of relationships and motivations and seem to have an existence independent of those who participate in them. And it does so in such a subtle way that it’s not automatically obvious. It doesn’t appear to be about institutions, but it is. That’s subtlety.

That’s only a start. There’s more that makes The Wire a challenge for viewers: it’s non-linearity (it’s more like a spiral), it’s bleak view of cities and urban institutions; the seeming randomness of so many events that impact lives, etc., etc., etc.

All that said, The Wire, for those willing to make the investment of time and attention, is a transcendent, moving experience. However downbeat it’s subject matter, it is, in the end, a true work of art, a masterwork, and as such ultimately enobling and uplifting. And just a thrill to watch.

“What is a ghost? A tragedy condemned to repeat itself time and again? An instant of pain perhaps. Somthing dead which still seems to be alive. An emotion suspended in time. Like a blurred photograph. Like an insect taped in amber”.
It is this rumination which opens THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE, a ghost story set during the Spanish Civil War directed by Guillermero Del Toro (Mimic, Blade 2) and presented by Pedro Almodovar.
Carlitos is an orphaned 12 year old who is sent to a boarding school that shelters orphans during the last days of the war.
One unwelcome occupant is the ghost of a murdered boy, called “The One Who Sighs” by the other pupils. Carlitos is unlucky enough to come face to face with the hideously disfigured apparition one night where as a dare, the other boys send him downstairs to get some water; but for some reason he ends up in the slug infested basement; where “The One Who Sighs” dwells in a pool conveniently located there.
The movie gets its title from the name given to the deformed spine of dead foetuses, which is preserved in alcohol by an ecentric teacher. The alcohol is then sold in town and touted as a “cure all” remedy…BR>THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE is a horror thriller that takes its time getting started, but once it does it makes Hollywood’s regular crop of horrors look anemic. Scary, stylish and twisty (in addition to twisted) THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE doesn’t undermine the viewer’s intelligence either. This is a must see for horror fans and film buffs.
Extra features on the DVD include a doco about the making of the movie, trailers, storyboard comparisons and commentaries by Del Toro and the cinematographer.

If you have seen the trailers for The Devil’s Backbone, and you were intrigued enough to see the movie, you won’t be disappointed. The trailer only scratches the surface of the film’s context and message, which is unusual in that it doesn’t give away the film’s most important moments (like many of today’s movie trailers out of mainstream Hollywood.)

The many themes presented in the movie (war, love, loss, greed, death and revenge) are visited upon us in very subtle ways. It is hard to describe how the filmmakers have done it, without giving away the plot’s clincher. The story unfolds slowly at first, drawing a very somber picture of life during the Spanish Civil War in a remote orphanage.

On a technical level, the special effects serve to heighten the emotional and psychological tension as the story progresses. This is a ghost story in more than one way: not only that of a child who appears from the beyond, but also of the metaphorical ghost of war that hangs over not only the orphans, but of all those who are struggling to survive through it. There is a great sense of despair and deprivation that is felt throughout all the characters’ actions and emotions. This is not a particularly violent war film physically, but more one psychologically that IMPACTS you very deeply after you have had time to think it through.

Marisa Paredes’ performance is far and away one of the most compelling this year. It would be nice to see her get some recognition state-side for her contributions to the cinema. Overall, the entire cast is excellent and the production as well as the screenplay are first-rate.

VERY highly recommended!!

Lucid, engaging, and comprehensive does not adequately describe Sir Kenneth Clark’s magnificent survey into Western Civilization. For a series over 40 years old, the audio is remastered, the transfers are remarkably clean, and the content and opinions of the host hardly seem dated. Clark effectively interweaves music, art, science and architecture into a broad sweeping portrait that defines Western thought. For those critics who find Clark’s praise for Western art either superficial or superfluous have probably been watching and listening to the typical PBS tripe directed to an audience with a junior high vocabulary with an attention span to match.

Clark is a splendid presenter and teacher whose enthusiasm for his work clearly shows. It’s all here, from the ancient Greeks to the modern age (well actually, circa 1969 when the series was made), while “Civilization” is a wonderful introduction to the “humanities”–something that they used to teach in college, but now supplanted by courses and programs of dubious relevance and replete with politically correct content.

If you snoozed during your mandatory art or humanities courses in college or just found them as an opportunity to catch up on some other homework during lecture, let Sir Kenneth Clark explain to you why these things still matter today and help to define our culture and our lives. For slightly more than what you would pay for one class at a local community college, you can enjoy a most superlative achievement in truly “higher education.”

Unlike the virtually unletterd commentators and hosts on the “History Channel” who apparently utter a profound “Wow, cool!” every time they are confronted with some architectual wonder or historical artifact, Clark’s presentation, scholarly but never “stuffy,” is a refreshing and welcome antidote.

Clark’s remarks and insight are as on target as they are illuminating–see the installment featuring Michaelangelo and the Renaissance and you will understand why. Now, if only the BBC would release Alistair Cooke’s “America” with Region 1 encoding for all of us to enjoy on this side of the pond…

If you have never seen this series before and are interested in art history, you just landed in a honey jar. Clark takes us on a 1,500 year journey through Western Civilization starting roughly at the end of the Roman Empire and ending in mid 20th century. He tells us straight out that his aim was to follow the history of Western European civilization as seen through the eyes of its artists. Why the limitation to only Western European civilization? Apparently, Lord Clark wanted to keep the series to a manageable length. The series is over 13 hours long as it is, and one can only wonder what it would have gone on to become had he included the Egyptian, Greco-Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Asian, African and Pre-Columbian cultures. The mind boggles. With Civilisation, Clark has done an incredible job of showing us the amazing cultural legacy left by our European forebears. And at the end he reminds us that this is only a fraction of what was actually achieved. You will recognize many of these works. Others will not be so familiar. But they carry the weight of historical significance, and everyone with at least a four year college education should be aware of the general drift of Clark’s presentation. He finished this program for the BBC in 1969. It was an immediate success and you can also find the book of the same name which was a popular spinoff of the series. I recommend it also. The series came along in the midst of some of the most tumultuous scenes of civic strife of the last 50 years. Against this background, Clark laid out his thesis that Western civilization has consisted of a series of catastrophes and rebirths. He indicates that our depression over the events of the twentieth century should not lead us into abandoning the cultural legacy which has been bequeathed to us. For example, if the Black Plague of the 14th century were to strike us with the same force it did before, over a hundred million Americans would die. The Thirty Years war devastated parts of Europe even worse than World War 2. And yet, the will to survive and rebuild society was always there. It is a prescient reminder for the current generation of thoughtful people.

The five star rating I gave Night of the Living Dead is, of course, for the original, uncut, unadulterated edition. The original is, quite simply, the most terrifying movie I’ve ever seen, even when compared to horror classics like Diabolique (the original French version), Psycho, Rosemary’s Baby, Halloween and The Shining. I saw NOTLD when I was 9 years old on Creature Features at midnight after a funeral. I had nightmares for the next two nights. The film still gives me the chills whenever I see it (usually at Halloween).

When the 30th Anniversary Edition came out, I bought it on VHS as I was curious to see what they termed as “new footage.” What I got was a horrible mess that butchered the original film, removed the original music for a terrible synthesizer score and added pointless footage that makes the viewer want to grind his teeth down to the gums. One of the additions is a new character: a fire and brimstone preacher. While the acting in the original is amateurish, at best, the “actor” who plays the preacher makes the original cast look like Oscar winners by comparison. He snarls, and howls and gnashes his teeth like he has rabies. Even more ridiculous is the extra footage of Bill Hinzman — the “cemetary zombie” in the original. The extra footage shows Hinzman’s character emerging from the grave, then cuts to the original 1968 opening footage with Judith O’Dea and Russell Streiner. It’s absolutely ridiculous as Hinzman looks 30 years older in the new footage. In addition, there are more zombies and a new ending to the film that makes no sense whatsoever. This “new” version is a piece of trash that desecrates the most frightening film of all time. Avoid it like the plague!

30 Anniversary version: No Stars

This review pertains only to the Millennium Edition DVD of Night of the Living Dead.

Okay…as I’d feared, my negative review of the John Russo-massacred “30th Anniversary Edition” of Night of the Living Dead has been lumped unwittingly into this product’s review, so I’ m writing this one to clarify.

This DVD edition is the best edition I’ve seen of the film yet. Anchor Bay may have raised the ires of legions of Living Dead fans by releasing the sacrilegious 30th Anniversary Edition, but Elite Entertainment did right by this new edition.

George A. Romero’s personal appreciation appears in the back of this DVD — this immediately restores our faith. And the contents don’t disappoint — the picture and sound are good, and though this doesn’t exactly contain the richest batch of bonus materials (sets like the excellent 3-disc edition of Dario Argento’s Suspiria and the recent double-disc Re-Animator both feature loads of extras), it is a nice solid collection. You get a Duane Jones interview (sadly with only audio and no image, but still great); an on-camera chat between Judith Ridley (Judy) and Marilyn Eastman (Helen); the hilarious student-film spoof “Night of the Living Bread” by Kevin S. O’Brien (which also appeared in the double-cassette VHS edition); two commentary tracks with Romero, Russo, Russ Streiner, Eastman, Karl Hardman and others. One very illuminating portion of this DVD for non-film-scholars is visually boring but informative — several histories outlining the beginning of Romero’s Latent Image company, on Hardman and Eastman’s company, and how the two were married to produce Night of the Living Dead.

THIS is the right edition of Night of the Living Dead, the one to get for both fans and non-fans alike. It includes all the necessary people (notice that Russo, Streiner and Bill Hinzman were included in this release, despite their criminal participation in the 30th Anniversary Edition), and it presents the film the way it wants to be seen.
Now I’m waiting for a deluxe release of Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead…

The songs may be “complete” as the DVD claims, but what isn’t mentioned is the inane narration over the beginning of just about every clip on the disk, which spoiled much of the enjoyment for me. I bought the DVD for the Connee Boswell clip (love those Boswell Sisters), but after the narration there’s just eighteen seconds of the song left. By the way, even accounting for the age/rarity of the clips, the quality of them often leaves something to be desired, as well.

This acclaimed compilation brings together full-length, rare performances from the great ladies of song: Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan and Ethel Waters. Hailed by Entertainment Weekly as “a grand parade of American miracles,” Ladies captures the excitement of the most distinctive female vocalists in Jazz.
