This series started off a little slow, but the set ups for storylines really start to pay off as we get backstory on Boma and the characters get more development (like Kyoko develops a personality finally!) Gorgeous art and music. I can’t wait until the next volume comes out!

One of the best films ever made that explores the human heart, “Shirley Valentine” begins with a bored British housewife who aches for “the girl who used to be me.” Shirley Valentine was the rebel, the smart-mouth, the girl who would dare to do what other girls only dreamed of having the nerve to try. Now she’s Shirley Bradshaw, a 42-year-old housewife with 2 grown kids and a husband she feels doesn’t love her anymore. This movie is about how a fortnight’s holiday alone (more or less - she arrives with a friend who promptly ditches her) in Greece enables her to find Shirley Valentine again. Funny, witty, heartwarming, inspiring, sentimental without being syrupy, “Shirley Valentine” is for all of us who’ve ever wondered if we made the right choices in life — and if it’s too late to take some of them back. Pauline Collins deserved the Oscar she was nominated for (too bad she didn’t get it), with one of the best performances by an actor ever put onto film. The perfect movie to watch WHENEVER you are “down in the dumps,” this film will cheer you up and give you hope, each and every time.

I saw this movie many years ago, when it first hit the art house theatres. I bought it on video as soon as it was available!

This movie touched me in a way that no other movie has before. Shirley’s desire to rediscover life during a marriage that’s lifeless, along with two grown kids that don’t seem to care much for her anymore, really was poignant. Her desire to find that young, rebellious girl that she once was, willing to take chances and enjoy life, see the world — it’s an amazing film.

You’ll enjoy her little sidebars to the cameras and her conversations with inanimate objects. Pauline Collins is adorable and a delight in this film. It’s a great film for women and men alike, for those who have forgotten who they are but want to get back in touch with their inner child, realize that just because your 40 doesn’t mean you’re dead; you’ve got a lot more living to do, as Shirley states in the movie.

Buy it for yourself and for others. It’s funny and touching at the same time. You’ll cheer for Shirley as she breaks out of the bored housewife mode and into the sexy go-getter who’s ready to conquer the world.

The only complaint I have (and it’small) is that the first time you watch it, you may have a hard time understanding Shirley. Her British accent is rather hard, but once you’ve watched it a number of times (and I’m sure you will want to) you get used to the accent.

After the release of Love Hina Spring Movie by Bandai, there was some concern by some fans of whether or not we would be seeing a release of Love Hina Again any time soon. Well, this is the answer we finally got. This is the final 3 episode OVA that ends the anime version of the Love Hina story. The story at this point is that this continues where the Spring Special left off. Naru, Keitaro, and Mutsumi have finally made it into Tokyo U. However, before Keitaro can begin his lifelong dream with Naru, a stroke of bad luck/accidents prevents Keitaro from attending the university. After deciding to take a summer study abroad position with Seta, the issue of Naru’s true feelings for Keitaro are put to the test, especially with the arrival of Keitaro’s sister, Kanako, who apparently has a promise with her brother and “loves” him very much. Add a legend about an old annex that binds two people together, which makes Naru’s struggle with her feelings that much more difficult. Will Naru open her heart to Keitaro or will she lose him forever?

This is another case where I had seen these last episodes in the original Japanese release. These last episodes are very heavy with the “fanservice” compared to the TV series and specials. Note: While the ending of the anime series with Love Hina Again is definitely a happy one, it’s somewhat incomplete. If you haven’t read the manga version of Love Hina that Tokyopop is currently releasing, I highly recommend it, since it contains a more extensive storyline and the “real” ending which is much better and has a definite closure to it.

Also, keep an eye out for Bandai Ent. plans to release a special “Movies” collector’s box/boxset which will hold/contain the X-mas, Spring, and LHA movies in Nov.

I preordered mine the second I found out the American release date. I was sucked into the sweet romantic comedy back in the April of 2002 when a friend in California made me page layout with images from Love Hina. I promptly bought the first DVD I could find (which happened to be the second one, good thing too, since that episode devoted to Shinobu bugs the hell out of me) and have been an obsessed, die-hard fan ever since.
I was sadly dissappointed when I read a review stating Love Hina Again ends at Manga 12. I currently own up to Manga 13 (since the 14th and final manga is not on sale) and would highly recommend buying the Manga series if you haven’t already. It truely does finalize Keitaro’s and Naru’s future plans better that the DVD. And unless they produce another DVD summing up the 13th and 14th manga, you miss a trully amazing (Though a bit sudden) “Happy Toudai Wedding!”
The fanservice is more apparent and abound in nearly every scene, but it’s nothing too extreme and not much worse that in the regular DVDs; my veiwing buddies included my younger sisters of 11 and 12 and nothing was too busty for me to cover their eyes, I personally found the Spring Special worse.

Anyways, happy veiwing!

Well, this review is mainly written for those who are already familiar with the movie and have yet to see this DVD version of it. First the good news. The picture quality is better than I have ever seen it on video, which is to be expected from the transfer. The colors are vivid and the lines are sharp, and overall the picture is cleaned up considerably. Also the sound is much clearer and in stereo, although there are moments where it seems the foley and looping are a little bit off (I’m hoping it’s not the notorious DVD lip-synch problem, although since this movie is dubbed it’s difficult to tell). That’s about all for the good.

Now the bad. First off, as I mentioned, this version is dubbed (and no there isn’t an original language option), and quite badly at that. This is regrettable considering that one thing that made the original so great was that it was multi-lingual, where Japanese spoke Japanese, Chinese spoke Cantonese and the Westerners spoke English. Here everything is dubbed into English, so the character differentiation is lost. Plus the voiceovers are wooden and unnaturally stilted, and the gist of the dialogue often strays from what is written in the subtitled version, which sometimes causes key thematic material to be lost (ie. Chen’s lecture to the other students concerning the importance of a powerful attack). This, of course, is a common problem concerning dubbing.

Secondly, that great title music has been wiped out and replaced with something more typical, more “dramatic” in terms of Hollywood thinking, I suppose.

Finally, and I think this is the most unforgivable thing, the ending has been truncated and the dialogue overtly distorted to completely change the context. I won’t say what it is, but I’ll just say the original ending had much more resonance than the new one. Also, the new ending cuts out the segment that shows what becomes of the Jing Woo school. I have no idea why they chose to cut that part out–it doesn’t even detract from the new ending, so what’s the point?

Still, the fight scenes, which are among the best ever filmed, are in their entirety, and they look better than ever, and I guess that’s most important. It’s just too bad that they felt the need to tinker with the movie, making it overall not as strong as the original.

The original, UNDUBBED version of this movie is one of the greatest kung fu movies of ALL TIME (one of my personal top 10)

THIS DVD [STINKS]. I cannot believe they printed this to DVD without putting the Mandarin and Cantonese language tracks in. I was forced to return this movie because of that. The translation was terrible, much of the subtlety from the original movie were lost.

The extended DVD of “Return of the King” is filled with many new and extended scenes that will please fans who love Tolkien’s original story. The July 26, 2004 San Diego Comic Convention featured a preview of many scenes, some introduced by Peter Jackson himself. (Some of these scenes were recently featured in the sneak preview trailer at Lord of the Rings.net, although now it seems to have been removed). In reference to a couple of reviews on the board here — if you’re waiting anxiously for the Scouring of the Shire, don’t hold your breath. That segment was NEVER filmed by Jackson, therefore it will NOT be included in the extended edition DVD. But there ARE plenty of great scenes to be included:

· We hear Christopher Lee’s booming voice echoed over a dark screen that lightened to reveal Saruman on top of Orthanc. He warns our heroes of something festering in the heart of Middle-earth and that they will all die.

· We see Frodo and Sam in their Orc disguises joining the column of Orcs as they march out of Mordor.

· There are numerous shots of the Houses of Healing with Faramir, Eowyn, and Merry all seen.

· A lot more looks to be added to the siege of Minas Tirith, as there was a bunch of new battle footage.

· Frodo and Sam venture into the Crossroads and a few clips from that section were included.

· The Mouth of Sauron is featured pretty heavily. If you’ve played EA’s Return of the King video game you’ll recognize the scene. The Mouth of Sauron rides out of the Black Gate and presents Frodo’s mithril coat to the Fellowship.

· Aragorn reveals himself to Sauron by approaching the Palantir in Minas Tirith and wields Anduril to show that the Heir of Elendil was alive.

· We get to see more of Saruman later in the preview when he knocks Wormtongue down and also fires a giant fireball from his staff that engulfs Gandalf on Shadowfax.

· There’s more of Frodo and Sam in Mordor after they join the column of Orcs and before they discard their disguises. In one scene, Sam looks to the dark sky of Mordor and tells Frodo that he can see light as one little star can be seen glimmering through the clouds.

· And yes, we will finally get to see Gandalf facing down the Witch King. It happens exactly as we’ve seen, but when Gandalf holds up his staff the Witch King pulls out his sword and holds it to the sky where it spouts flames. As he brings it down, the air around the burning sword is distorted.

That was just the preview. New Line treated fans to three full clips, with the third introduced by Peter Jackson himself:

· There was a nice scene of Pippin and Faramir in Gondor where Faramir explains to the Hobbit how the small Gondorian armor he was wearing belonged to a young son of the Steward when he was a kid. Faramir further explains how Boromir was always the soldier and he wasn’t.

· A scene that takes place about five days after they were healed by Aragorn features Faramir and Eowyn on a balcony at the Houses of Healing where Eowyn falls for Faramir.

· The Paths of the Dead is extended from where it ends in the theatrical cut. After Aragorn poses his offer, the dead laugh and go back into the walls. A massive earthquake starts, and the Three Hunters must escape an avalanche of millions of skulls.

· Described, but not shown, another scene expanded in this edition is the scene where Pippin finds Merry on the battlefield. Now, Pippin searches the field for an entire day after everyone else has gone back into the city. He finally locates Merry at night in the new version of the scene.

Just a few weeks to go till the “Return of the King” extended edition hits the stores!

Peter Jackson proved me wrong when I said, like many people, that Lord of the Rings would be a bust: Spielberg-adventure at best, Lucas-disaster at worst. Had I known Tolkien’s classic was in the hands of the guy who directed Heavenly Creatures, I would have been more optimistic. As it turns out, my expectations were completely overturned. In some ways the films are actually better than the books, especially in terms of emotional power. Competent actors, amazing cinematography, and a brilliant music score combine to offer us Middle-Earth as we’d never imagined it.

Fellowship of the Ring is the most polished film, with its elegant episodic pacing. We start in the idyllic world of the hobbits and flee with Ringwraiths hot on our heels; we rest in Elrond’s sanctuary and plunge into Moria; we come out grieving and console ourselves in Galadriel’s safe (yet unsettling) dream-wood, and then wind up surrounded by Uruk-hai. This is a quintessential fantasy road-journey containing three episodes within an episode, each beginning in a haven and followed by a dark journey. The pacing is flawless, and the plot unfolds to a perfect beat.

Two Towers is the ambiguous film. It’s excellent (or at least the extended version is) but structured in a way that the hobbits become sidelined by the Rohan story. As they are the soul of Tolkien’s epic, we feel slightly nonplussed at their consignment to B-storylines. Ironically, the film is a showcase for cgi characters Gollum and Treebeard, who manage to steal the show from within these storylines.

Return of the King is the most dramatic film, tragic on almost a biblical level, and certainly the most satisfying. I can understand why Elijah Wood calls it “better than one and two combined”. It centers on the hopeless mission to Mount Doom, which, as every fan knows, is the heart of the story. Around this we’re bombarded by apocalyptic chaos and destruction on the Pelennor Fields, followed by Aragorn’s hopeless march on the Black Gate. We finish at the Grey Havens, the best ending in literary and cinematic history, which encapsulates all of Tolkien’s themes: courage, friendship, suffering, and passing on. It just doesn’t get better than this.

Peter Jackson deserves more accolades than I’m capable of heaping to the point of overkill. Minor quibbles aside, the extended versions of these films are masterpieces to be treasured as much as the books. Tolkien’s classic may be pure, but the movie’s cinematography takes us where even the written word cannot go. Tolkien’s writing is irreplaceable, but Howard Shore’s music taps deeper into Middle-Earth’s soul. The text is sacred, but the scriptwriters changed it anyway so that it could actually work on screen. The entire project has been too good to be true, and I’m still in awe of it.

Seen it back in ‘92 . Funny , yet interesting film as it discloses perfectly the Italian and Greek culture , as both are non-war happy people . Perfect match between the wonderful scenario , and actors play-roles .

Over the course of one year, all seven continents (including Antarctica - BRRRRR!) and nine countries (Canada, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Russia, Australia, Japan, South Africa and Brazil), Tunick and his crew map out an ambitious agenda that says as much about the cultures he encounters as it does about the subjects and landmarks he photographs.
